From Ducker's article

You can just tell that if Barca even get a whiff of FDJ trying to force a stay to get his money, they will make him enemy no.1 in the whole region. They will blame him for missing all the transfers they wanted to do.

I cannot recall any clubs getting into situations like this, and this is not a one off for UTD every window it is the same, even when we buy a player like Hererra, Maquire etc... there is nonsense more often than not we either get rammed or walk away red faced having spent an entire window chasing our tails

Aye @Zed 101, City didn’t chase their Kane tails for all of the 2021/22 window, Madrid didn’t chase their Mbappe tails for years. Liverpool didn’t end up utterly red faced and empty handed after chasing VVD for the lead up to, and the entire Summer window.

Nope, no other clubs.

The saucy Blackpool rendezvous between VVD and Klopp  Oh the good old days

No journalist has a full picture to what’s happening…

I know we are shit and naive in negotiating deals but we can’t be that stupid to negotiate a fees before we know the player is open to move? Or can we be?

Go see pages 307 to 475. This has been discussed already.

It is true.

It’s also absolutely the right thing to do. Playing (reasonably) hard ball will surely make clubs think twice before holding out for the United Tax from now on.
Its not, main problem is what Barca owes to De Jong and how it will be payed.

Why are they adamant in signing Rafinha? not a bad player but at around 70m they could leave that deal and sort out a lot of issues including FdJ’s contract.

Barce are a complete mess.

Amen. The club is castigated for fees we have previously paid. We now appear to be acting much more responsibly and negotiating deals rather than just paying what we are initially asked. Long may it continue, even if we do lose the occasional target.

Mental isn’t it. They can’t pay the players they’ve already got and yet they’ll probably end up signing more than we will.

Is this like leaving breakfest on his doorstep?

Showing up to show FDJ we want him

Starting to think there is very little authority on this matter when it comes to updates. Lots of people trying to stay up to date, but its ridiculously fluid.

All we need now is a lunch meeting between Arnold, Murtough, Laporta and Xavi before the deal is finally signed off.

Well you’re oversimplifying it a bit here. If we paid extra as Barcelona are pushing for then they’d have the money to pay him off. We however have refused to accept that hence the slightly bumpier road to the destination we all want, but on the positive side it’s left us with a decent amount of fuel still in the tank.

As I understand the deal was agreed in principle a while ago.

This time last season it was hailed as our best squad in forever by most. Granted we lost a few players, but most of them didn’t really contribute much last year anyway.
I think it’ll be Eriksen, deJong, Martinez and a forward - in that order. I hope that’s flurry enough for you.;)

That's another 3 signings so yeah I'd take that.

and the reason it isn’t finalised is that Barcelona are looking down the back of the sofa and wondering if they can transfer some old pesetas they found into euros to pay him off. Which wouldn’t be the case if we’d paid what they wanted.

Neither of you are right or wrong, as always it’s somewhere in the middle.

I don't think we paid extra; this was all simply waiting for De Jong to return from holiday (which he did yesterday)

I know it's ridiculous to ask now but is he going to transform this team? Seems his biggest strength is dribbling and dribbling isn't really valued in the league, passing, dynamism and movement are. Am I off with this?

Utd are not chasing their tails with this deal.
Far from it.
We just have had to play a waiting game until Barca and FDJ get their own shit in order and the transfer negotiations can go beyond the basic framework that is supposed to have been reached, between the clubs.

Utd either decide not to hang around any longer and move on, or set up meetings with Barca to try and get things moving.
If the reports of Arnold and Murtough being in Barcelona are true, then we’ve either taken the latter course, or a deal is closer than the reports suggest and they are out there to negotiate and finalise the arrangements.

Neither the press, or the ITK pundits know the truth and neither club is going to leak or brief anything around any final negotiations and the detail nitty gritty.
I would hope that Utd are close to setting deadlines that they are perfectly prepared to stick to and walk away from any prospective deal.
One thing we should not be doing, is paying over the odds to bail Barca out of their own mess.
We’ll stand no chance in any future deals if we carry on like we had done previously under Woodward.

Its common sense really dunno why wums keep tweeting that. Of course we wouldn't negotiate with the club without asking if the player is interested or not

We shouldn't just dismiss the reports that we don't like out of hand though. It's no secret that there is/has been some persuasion required here for the player, and contrary to what people say - clubs agree deals for players without having agreed with the player first all the time. Just this window, it appears Ekitike has personally snubbed Newcastle despite the club side being sorted, and Chelsea have agreed a fee with Leeds for Raphinha ages ago, but clearly haven't succeeded, as of yet, in convincing the player to accept it ahead of his preference in signing for Barcelona. Arsenal are seemingly of even less interest to Raphinha, and they have also made formal offers for him.

Basically, we don't really know what the detail is here.

Have you seen De Bruyne and Bernardo Silva dribbling in midfield? You don't think its useful? Anyway De Jongs skillset goes far beyond simply dribbling anyway.
We lack press resistance and game control in midfield, he will help a lot with that, as well as the ability to break the lines and facilitate transitions.
Of course, for overall team press resistance, we need more e.g Malacia, Martinez etc

We are attempting to do business with the biggest shambles in world football. A bankrupt club with zero ability to register players they have apparently signed.

I have but take KDB, he strikes the ball better than anyone in world football. So while he can dribble, his ability to whip unreal crosses into the box that are undefendable or bang in twenty five yard shots for fun, means that he doesn't just have his driblling.

Silva can dribble but his movement and stamina make him much more. Can De Jong strike the ball well? Does he have an engine?
