 my thoughts exactly.

Personally I think we should wait until the pen is in his hand to sign before snatching the contract and marching the feck outta there
Its a complex solution that will leave us fecked if De Jong doesn't turn out world class here.

It would be like paying Frenkie double wages if that's the case.
We shouldn't bail Barca out of their mess.

If we’re going to pay the extra €20m anyway, I’d rather it go to him than them

What will happen if Barcelona refuse to pay the deferred wage?

He’ll just have to stay and play out his contract?
Im sure he would leave and deal with then legally. Which Barca wont want to happen. Barca will pay up when they can which isnt right now. They need to raise some cash first

Admittedly I have no idea about how something like this would be resolved but would signing for United stop FdJ from then pursuing wages he is still owed by Barca? Why does it have to be sorted before he goes?

Both sides likely don’t want to have to go through the legal proceedings. So its better to resolve it now

my guess is they're trying to force him into giving up some of those deferred wages and/or get us to cover some of it. You know, things shady clubs do.

But from Barcelona’s perspective surely this isn’t a desirable scenario? Would it not be in their interest to pay his deferred wages owed, and then sell him? Otherwise they will be contractually bound to pay him his huge wages, plus backdated pay for the next four years? No wonder they want to sell him.

So if I understand that correctly, Barca's most dominant issue is wages due to La Liga's ffp, not cash, right?

Surely in that case we pay the £17m to De Jong and substract it from the transfer fee. We get the player, pay the same and their wage troubles relax

Frenkie says relax... that's what I'm doing anyway. He'll be here eventually.

It's an absolute mess of a situation but hopefully United take full advantage of it come end of the transfer window.

Barca also can’t sell him before they sell the rest of the TV rights. Else they can’t use all the proceeds from his sale. So I guess we have to wait until they do that

Except regular add ons only come into play when certain landmarks are achieved, this would be definite.

True. But there could then potentially be a deal with signing on fees or something. I don’t know. But I don’t think it’s a coincidence that the number were apparently haggling over matches the fee that he’s owed

Every chance that it’s all done and just being held up by Barca’s financial mess to be honest

I can't say I've followed every news story... nor have I read the majority of this thread... nor do I have any particular insight into transfers in general... BUT does it not seem plausible that Barcelona are using the threat of a forced transfer away to a less favoured (non-CL) club as a way of pressuring FdJ into agreeing a wage decrease / accepting a haircut on wages owed?

This is a solvable problem, but it has to involve Barcelona and Frenkie settling for an amount less than the 13.9m that appears to be owed to him in deferred compensation.

Be prepared for this going all the way to September 1. Be prepared for McFred to guide us through the following fixtures:

Brighton
Brentford
Liverpool
Southampton
Leicester City
Arsenal
Palace

Or, United can settle for a higher transfer fee that it believes it's closing in on now and stipulate that some amount of that sum be directed to settle FDJ's deferred compensation....and see Frenkie be fit and ready to assume his rightful place on the pitch if not for Brighton then certainly for Brentford. A dire start to the season will cost us a lot more than the a significant chuck of the 13.9 that appears to be holding up the transfer.

Not really seen this possibility discussed.
They can't sell him against his will, though.

The people going on about this lasting till the end of the window are completely forgetting Barcelona have players they want in to and again are instantly just jumping to the worst but unlikely outcome.

Lewandowski won't be sitting around hoping he gets his move until the last day.

Breach of contract, could sue them and break from his contract for free.
He could walk away for nothing. Contract has been breached.

thanks for your replies to my question

maybe I am wrong, but I thought basically he took a lower wage for 2 seasons and his wage would be much higher for the rest of his contract starting from now, because it includes the “deferred wage” on top.

So if he stayed, Barcelona would still be paying him back, but over the course of his remaining contract. So they’d pay it back over (4?) years rather than as a lump sum now. In that case, they may decide to keep him as it gives them longer to repay him right?

Or am I missing a key detail? / getting it wrong?

Add to that the next cash injection is at least a fortnight away.

Its a big part of it. Forego the €20m you are owed already, drop your wages in half essentially and you can stay. That's hardly an appealing offer for a player, even if it's your childhood team. Barca are doing this because they also don't have a financial choice in the matter, they're a disaster and can't register free signings until they clear up a ton in wages anyway. So yeah, they essentially need De Jong gone and are also hoping to get away without paying him what they owe him, whereas he's probably trying to get what he is owed if the move is agreed.

They are trying to sell him and get away without paying what he is owed, is what I think the issue is. So then I'm sure you'll get into discussions of asking for a fee that covers those costs so United fronts it, etc.

If I’m missing sarcasm, then I apologise.

We absolutely shouldn’t walk away when we’re clearly very close to our new managers #1 target

Barca will have to use some of the money they’re getting from de Jong to pay him his salary.

Most probably offer to split the difference. Which is where Romero obviously got this from.

I wouldn't put it past Barca to ask for more if we offered them that.
They'd likely push us to offer the full amount fixed after that. Saying that... whats saying we haven't offered that, they've accepted now they're having issues with owed wages. Would either club really announce that a fee has been agreed if theres still issues to work out with wages?
