Well United have said Ronaldo isn't for sale, and we're planning for a season with him and expect him to be here... does anyone realistically believe that? I know I don't.Things are going so swimmingly well that the president of Barca has twice said that the player isn't for sale, and I don't know how many times the player has said he wants to stay in Barcelona.

They way I understand it, and this is all speculation I don't know if that's true, is that the deferred payments (€16 million) are included in his contract with Barcelona, and Barcelona are trying to get out of that if he goes to Manchester United. There also seems to be some issue with his agent's commission, but I don't know enough about that.
As for De Jong, I was just clarifying his situation, he doesn't really need to do anything because he has all the leverage. The only issues with that would be if Barcelona default sometime in the future, particularly if they continue as they have, and if he gets punished by not being played (this is usually illegal, but it's possible).
To be honest if I were him I'd just stay at Barcelona and hedge my bets on them not going tits up.

I am sure Ten Hag was presented with targets and this is the one he has identified. He knows de Jong better than Murtough. He can text de Jong, they're on a first name basis. this couldn't be more different than the Fabregas situation. Barcelona didn't have financial issues back then and could happily slam the door on any transfer.
also, "the club don't really want to sell" is BS. Don't buy Laportas snake oil, they need this transfer to happen even moreso than we do.
