I find it quite ridiculous how Barca seem to be fleecing their own players while trying to get the likes of Lewandowski to the club with promises of a huge contract.

If this were Fergie era United, I'd say we give up trying to sign De Jong and let him and Barca sort themselves out and not do Barca any favours by giving them a large transfer fee for a player they want to be rid of.

But as it stands, we're in desperate need for quality players, which is what De Jong is, and it's clear how much our new manager wants him.

If I were to get to ask ETH one question right now, I'd be asking him is there really no alternative to Frenkie De Jong?

If reports are true then the player doesn't want to be at United. That's it. Stick a pin in it.

We absolutely have to sign players that want it

I might be wrong, but I don’t think 250-300k is enough to lure him to United. He doesn’t even wants to come at first place, I reckon would take more money to convince him here, maybe 350-400k range .

Would you really want a player who doesn't really want to be here and only joins United for the money?
If FdJ doesn't see in which total mess Barcelona are into, then I wouldn't want him near any club I support.

I wished we pulled off after the public "I am at the best club..." speech.
No matter our sratus I don't want to see our club as a desperate and begging on it' knees.
And, please, don't start with "What he could say anyway" - he can always stop these questions with "No comment" and stuff. What will be his first press release if he signs? "I always wanted to play for Barca and I love the club, but they are broke and EtH helped me a lot back in Ajax"? I really don't want to sign anyone, who doesn't to be here. And for all the drama - imagine if we have to go for a ST this same summer and negotiating with De Laurentis. Just imagine.

He absolutely is a dream signing in every sense, would allow us to beat the press in the middle of the field like I have never seen us. Let's see what happens, I hope we have alternatives in mind if this doesn't materialize - we have been down this road before with different players - and have been caught with our pants down when they either chose to stay at their current clubs or joined someone else.

I love the ‘if he stays he has to take a pay cut’ line…..errr no he doesn’t?

He’s got 3-4 years left on a 350k a week contract he doesn't have to do shit.

Why is he on so much money?? He’s a Barce fan coming from Ajax who threw 350k at him

Kick in the teeth if he takes a wage pay cut and stays.

We are offering him to be main man to build around and playing his best postion and manager that will play him to his strengths.

Personally speaking I don’t. I am actually looking forward to this summer seeing us signing a number of “money ball” type of players who are cheaper and willing do a particular job for us. But if ETH thinks he is crucial player for his system, who am I to say this otherwise.

It’s a tough one with de Jong.

On one hand we have a player who doesn’t want to leave Barcelona yet Barcelona seem desperate to get rid of him.
On the other hand, we are desperate for this caliber of player. From the outside looking in, it seems that ten hag is desperate for his signature which all points to how important ten Hag sees de Jong to the rebuild of the team.

Personally, I think the risk of waiting and losing his signature, possibly our second choice as well, far outweighs the risk of panicking and signing our 3rd or 4th choice player. The problem the board have is they know fans frustration is growing by the day. The protests are going to continue and will grow, the boycotting and harassment of the club’s commercial sponsors is going to continue and grow.
The harsh reality is, the board are going to have to try and ride this storm out. The only way to fix the mess is for the club to do it the right way. Even if that means losing a player or two along the way.

Panic buying never works.

I love how people just ignoring reports that de Jong don't want to reduce his wage and just assumed that he will accept wage reduction just to stay at Barca.

I don’t think we’d have gotten this far if FDJ didn’t see the total mess Barca are in. There’s simply no way ETH hasn’t spoken with his former player multiple times about the move.
He’d be joining because of ETH and because Barça are an absolute shit show, the only club in the World that thinks their players should take massive pay cuts to play for them, the utter tosspots.
I refuse to believe FDJ has so little self respect that he can’t see when his current employer is treating him like utter dog shit.

Honestly, even regular football fans are at fault for creating some imaginary Barca dream that so many players must have. You ask any fan if KDB stays at City if they defer his wages for two years and then try to feck him over and make him split his pay in half, or if Salah stays at Liverpool in similar circumstances, or Kante at Chelsea.
People would laugh you out of the building, but hey, it’s Barca, a dream club, surely players will be fine being treated like dog shit as long as they can keep playing for them. :wenger:

PSG were in for him when they 1st got him from ajax

I wouldn't do it, if I were him. He still has 4 years left and combined he will probably have to give up 20+ million just to play for them. A footballer's career is finite and those are quite a lot of money to give up, especially knowing you probably have around 6-7 years at a top level.

Also, didn't he already agree to a paycut during Covid?

Because he and his agent aren’t fecking morons, he was the most in demand midfielder in Europe that Summer. Other clubs (United, City, PSG, Chelsea) would’ve paid him that, and contrary to popular belief, footballers don’t tend to take half the amount of money to play for a club they like more.
Barça needed to offer parity with the other clubs to secure his signature, if they had offered 150k /week then, he’d have spent the past few seasons in Paris.

I doubt he will stay there and take a huge pay cut. When he left Ajax, Barca had to match PSG’s offer for him to go there. Unless he was bluffing and would have accepted lower wages, but i doubt it, then he would have gone earlier to Barca if it was only them.

He is not stupid and he will have his wife, agent and family saying him the same, to have some self respect and that a career is short, plus us building around him.

No idea. But these players seem to live in their bubble far from reality.
It just puzzles me that a player who Barcelona treats this way, still absolutely wants to play for them. He even might accept a salary reduction.
It's similar to the Lewandowski who wants to leave Bayern, because of lack of respect shown to him from the board. Many (mainly of course the media and opposition fans) in Germany think he got a point. However how can somebody who values respect that highly then choose to join Barcelona?

The last 2 years Barcelona were deferring salaries, now they are cashing in into future revenues by selling their TV rights instead of trimming their squad and wage structure.
Wonder what will be next. Bail out from the government?

Personally I am way past signings who only see us as an easy payday and are only here because we offer better wages than anyone, like Sanchez, and would ideally prefer us to stay away from these sorts of signings. That being said this is clearly an important signing for ETH and we have to hope that that plays some part in FDJ coming here and it’s not just because of the money.

Because he clearly only cares about a club showing respect to HIM.

That’s what all players care about really, and FDJ has been seriously disrespected, I don’t think there’s a chance he takes the massive pay cut you suggest he might. He would‘ve joined PSG over Barça if that was suggested back then, and what’s changed? Barça are in a much worse state, Messi is gone and they treat their players like horse shit.

FDJ is only at Barça because they matched the wages on offer elsewhere.
If they didn’t, he’d be at PSG, or City, or Chelsea.

The “love of the club” portion is, as always, massively overblown. If he loved the club as much as some suggest, why is he on such high wages? Why didn’t Barca offer him then what they are suggesting now? Because he’d have told em to go feck themselves right?

It's funny how people here want us to move to 2nd/3rd/4th choice targets but if we sign those players and they flop or Ten Hag struggles to implement his system with those midfielders these same fans will spin the narrative saying "We don't back managers with their first choice targets like Pep/Klopp we only give them average alternatives!!! Glazers Out!! Glazers Out!!"
It's simple, as long as there is a chance we can get him Utd need to keep pushing on with the deal if Ten Hag views the player as Paramount to his project. That way the manager and only the manager can be held accountable if the player doesn't flop or if Ten Hag himself doesn't perform up to standard even after getting his first choice target.

If he decides to accept the pay cut surely this saga dies either today or tomorrow? This can't just keep going. There has to be a decision soon right? What could possibly keep it rumbling?

Is he due for preseason? God knows when

exactly.
Midfield is the foundation of ten Hag system. It's imperative that he got this one right. Settling for second or third choice would risk to prolong the adjustment period, while everyone would like United to sped up and running as soon as possible.
If there's a chance for de Jong, a player who ten Hag knows well, and crucial in how United want to play, then we do everything to get him

He’s clearly already turned down a pay cut and reduction on the amount owed, that’s why negotiations started with United.
Laporta “doing everything in his power” means he might offer a little better than previous, but he knows Frenkie won’t accept it.

I’ll be honest. Good player but I’m pretty fed up of this all now so not particularly bothered if he comes one way or another. Just want it sorting ASAP so we can move on.

A pay cut on FDJ's behalf, will it be enough to resolve Barcelona's financial crisis?

Think people put way too much emphasis on the 'he doesn't want to be at united' point. I don't think it's necessarily that so much as he'd rather be at barca. It doesn't mean he couldn't make the best of playing for us. Few players end up at their favorite clubs but most are professional and do their best for the team they're at.

Ever increasing circles, followed by ever decreasing circles. 48 hours followed by another 48 hours.

I know loads of people are saying just leave this one .. but we can’t. This is ten hags number one target. The guy he wants to build his entire squad around, anyone else wouldn’t be as good. ETH knows this player extremely well and is pretty much in love with him as a footballer.

Get him at all costs, we have to get the best available in every position, liverpool and City have that, it’s so important to our entire rebuild and becoming competitive.

Barca emotionally blackmailing their players into accepting a significant pay cut says everything about them as a club. Pathetic.
Probably missing something here…. puzzled as to how Barca can legally cut De Jong’s wages when he already has a contract?

Sorry mate , but what a load of bull. Before he was ever matched to Barcelona. He always declared that Barca was his dreamclub. You have to understand. Cruijff made barcelona to what it is. A huge load of best Ajax played there and had a huge impact. And when you are bought for 85 mill by the club a huge pay includes with that. If you do not understand that, you are not understanding the basic logic

Ultimately words mean little in transfers. It is about formal signed agreements.
And the fact personal terms have not been discussed with De Jong yet is quite incredible. As that will really show the Dutchman's appetite for Old Trafford. And that should have been done.

One thing is for sure if we don't get him it will surpass anything that happened under Ed Woodward in terms of recruitment embarrassments.

Let's keep fingers crossed.
You are right... words mean little in transfers, but there is absolutely no chance we'd spend 2 months chasing someone, then agreeing a fee with the club if the player had absolutely no intention of joining us.
ETH will have had discussions with de Jong and he's have recievied enough assurances for us to continue with the transfer. If he was to bottle it, he'd have told us and we'd have briefed that we've walked away. ETH must be absolutely certain that personal terms aren't a problem and that he has a desire to join us and be the main man
