I really thought the days of spanking out massive money on players who don’t even want to leave their club were over. He’s obviously excellent but it’s difficult not to be pessimistic given our previous dealings.

why can’t our useless scouting department identify quality options that don’t cost a fortune coming from other big clubs for feck sake?

Exactly this. Same story every summer...

Have you ever seen De Jong play?

Yeah I think he's good, just not 70-80m good. Just like I didn't think Sancho was worth 70m (though I think FDJ is better value between the two at that price). The problem is we have quite a few positions we need to fill, signing one player for big money and hoping it fixes everything as we've done for the past 6 summers won't help. It's just poor scouting

It will come down to Ten Hag having enough pull to persuade him to come here over other clubs that can offer him CL football. Will them having a good relationship with each other be enough? I guess we’ll soon find out.

We will pay him stupid wages too…

Nope. No way. I refuse to let this become Vidal. <switches off muppet brain. Comes back 5 minutes later to check for an update>

If this is true about the 95% true (very sceptical still) then this shows straight away in how we will be dealing with transfers going forward- Ed used to love briefing the media however this potential transfers seems to have caught everyone off guard.

Just popping in here to point out that you can’t actually sign a player who doesn’t want to sign. I’ll be back in another thread in a week.

... this one isn't going to happen...
It does feel a bit Fabregas again, about the same age with the same issues getting into the team. However, I think the opposite.

Barca already don't play him every game, nor in his best position, and are signing Kessie next month - so he'll play even less. They obviously want to sell and are starting to leak stories. And his stock will fall by January / next summer if he remains behind Pedri, Gavi and now Kessie.

Then you have United losing Matic and Pogba and being left with McFred. They clearly need a top class DM in there desperately. And De Jong is the best about who is potentially available. The Erik Ten Hag connection can only help too.

Tchouameni or De Jong is exactly what we need. The board should go all out for these deals. At the moment, United might have to overpay a bit to attract one of the two, and it will be worth the trouble.

Tchouameni yes, De Jong no. Why do you want a marquee unmotivated player who wants to stay at Barca and is forced out of the club ? Only thing we can offer is mid table drama and dressing room gang culture. We are only getting him if other top clubs dont have the funds, or dont want to prioritize this type of deal.

How do you know he doesn't want to sign? Not saying you're wrong by the way.

Maybe working with ETH again and being the main man in our midfield appeals?

De Jong for £50-60m would be a very good signing. The first real sign that we want to sign players that suit the manager's philosophy.
Can't help but think JWP would be easier deal to do, cheaper, and will take him less time to adapt to Utd / PL.

This seems more opportunistic than anything our scouting department have come up with. Ten Hag knows him inside out and if he wants him here I'm all for it. We need quality in midfield.

I don’t know that. Many others do though, and have expressed reservations about us signing a player who doesn’t want to come here, which is near enough an oxymoron, which is what I’m pointing out.

If De Jong actually signs for us, that would be far greater proof about where he wants to be than some random tweet.

Yeah with recession looming £50m is a fair deal considering his wages. This assumes the likes of PSG and City do not bite.

Seen some tweets saying PSG were looking at Pogba, but had to free up some wages, so not sure they'd be able to pursue FDJ, which is concerning as this situation is pretty much a carbon copy of our Di Maria transfer - Madird wanted ADM out while he wanted to stay, next best thing would be PSG, PSG couldn't due to FFP so he reluctantly joined us, only to underwhelm and bugger off to PSG a year later.

Plus FDJ reminds me of Martin Wallström.

I know it's been discussed to death but I still can't figure out if he's a box-to-box or a DM. Looks like he occupies the same positions during play as Scott from the youtube videos.

Given their past together, Erik will know whether De Jong is only in it for the money. Tchouameni, De Jong, or someone else, I would hope Erik has the final say. United will have to rebuild from the middle of the park, and this is one of the most crucial transfers in the coming window.

His relationship with Ten Hag would have to be amazing for him to joing us. Sporting wise, we are 2nd/3rd tier club.

We should prioritize Tchouameni. No one is paying his wage aside from City or Newcastle.

Barcelona is looking to offload anyway, no point in offering huge fee.

Well we can’t have that then if he will hinder Scott!

This is my first summer being a part of this forum so now i get to see what being a muppet is all about.
Muppet season in some ways is better than the real season its full of hope and dreams , Unfortunately like the real season it ends being a rollercoaster ride of Emotion which ultimately leaves you feeling empty and wondering what if ...

I can't get excited. Even if we get him we will pair him beside McTominay not Feed which are terrible pairings.

It's absolutely sickening seeing our fans talk us down like that.
Chelsea, Newcastle more attractive destinations than Manchester United? Jesus wept. Are you genuine supporters or opposition fans trying to wind us up?
Barcelona is also going through a rough patch if you hadn't noticed. But Barcelona is still Barcelona, so it's understandable that he's reluctant to leave. However if Barca want to sell I don't see why he wouldn't welcome joining another massive club like Manchester United, where he'd be united with his former boss who had a system that enabled De Jong to play his best football to date.

With the world cup played in the winter, this might be a season where not CL football but guaranteed starting position might be a deal breaker.

Translation:

Frankie De Jong
  • Wants to continue (at Barcelona)
  • Tells dressing room: I want to keep going (at Barcelona)
  • Annoyed at rumours. He has nothing advanced with anyone.
  • Xavi considers him untransferable but sympathises with the club's financial position [I could've gone for a more wooden translation but I think this captures the gist]
  • Barcelona is waiting for offers
  • United, City, Bayern and PSG are paying attention (to the situation)

Di Maria all over again..?

I disagree with those assertions. They have improved under Xavi, but prior to that, they would have struggled to finish top 4 in England. Chelsea, who finished 4th last year, would have probably beaten them comfortably. This year they ended up in the Europa League, finishing behind Benfica in their group. Real or Barca going through a tough spell will still mean ‘guaranteed CL football’. Teams in England who fall off can’t do that. Either you are in a genuine title race or you are reduced to hope.

And I thought Soler had agreed a new deal the other day?

Last year United qualified for the Champions League and were clearly worse than Barcelona.

Soler has not yet renewed.

Yeah sure, tell yourself whatever makes you happy. At your current state, if you were in the premier league you wouldn't make next seasons champions league.

It neither makes me happy nor does it stop making me happy. That is my opinion.

Arsenal and Tottenham have been tremendously irregular, to say that Barcelona would be behind them is very debatable.

At least try to reach Europa League final like us last season before making that statement .
[/QUOTE

And what does the Europa League have to do with that?

I could also say that how Tottenham will be above Barcelona if they finished third in the group stage of the conference league.

''Aping Liverpool and Man City by recruiting unconditionally to the specific playing style of the new manager once known.''

That's one of the recommendation that Ralf recommended to us. Between Tchouameni and FDJ, which one who's likely or has more chance to fit into ETH's playing style?

It's pure honesty.

More than ever, footballers are driven by money and this place has been a retirement home, club for the lads or just a pretty bad place to be for touching a decade.

Newcastle are potentially where City were when they started signing players like David Silva.

If Chelsea get their hierarchy sorted, it's not long since they were crowned champions of Europe.

United are in a bad place and probably not in Top 10-15 destinations in Europe right now. It's not talking down or a wind up, it's pure fact.

Not liking this.

great player and would improve us immensely, but he's clearly happy at Barca and being forced out.

If he joins and gives 100% then great, but I don't want him sulking here from the first minute. We need players with determination and fight to turn this shit around.

For the price we should probably move on.

I think what he’s saying is a reply to the people that are adamant De Jong won’t want to come here

edit - just as I thought

Being a supporter doesn't mean you have to be blind.

If I was a footballer and had a lot of teams after me it's unlikely United would be high up on my list of teams to join.

Think logically careers are short and a lot of players regress and fail here. That's the reality. Other than us paying a lot of money there are much better options than us for s lot of players.

It's shit but it's a fact.

It'll turn you into a bitter, cynical shell of a person. Go now before it's too late.

Who broke you @nainaisson ?

Not a chance Bayern are paying a record transfer fee and £350k p/w for a player in a position where they already have Kimmich, Goretzka and Gravenberch (with Sabitzer and Tolisso as cover).

If we’re limiting ourselves to players who want to join United, that’s going to be a pretty small pool in terms of top players

Well, when you make such as statement you need to have evidence or something to back it up. Can't even reach UCL round 16 and then followed with failing to reach EL final this season are clearly making your statement weak.
