Would a 25 year old about to enter his peak career (who btw hasn’t won as much you’d think he has) want to move to a club that is basically at the start of a project at this moment in time? Let’s be honest would be a very strange career move for him even with the Ten Haag links.
Salah, Mane, David Silva, Yaya Toure even our very own Ronaldo all made the same moves at roughly the same age to start similar projects at Pool, City and Madrid.

He does not want to leave and would only leave, because the club can’t afford to keep him.

We should stay well clear of players joining for the wrong reasons.

Have we learnt nothing?

We've got to move away from being a place that pays over the odds for unwanted players and offers of wages that mean they are impossible to move on if underperforming.

Reckon this link is that last thing the club wanted to have out there.

Unless we're the only ones in for him, and he agrees to leave Barca, I struggle to see this happening.

Even with the ten Hag appeal, PSG, City, Chelsea, even Newcastle (!) are arguably more attractive options for him.

We've had drip-fed suggestions that the club is planning a more shrewd and researched approach to transfers, I'm not sure if this would fit that model.

May be a glass-half-empty take, but that's where the club's left us

You sign this guy then that’s our big money signing of the summer. I can’t see us spending another £60m+ on Nunez for example. The rest of our business will be done by looking at free transfers and players in the £30-40m range. There’s a lot of areas that need addressing, we’ll need 4-5 players in at a minimum.

Bechler is another reliable source for Barcelona.

Seems more likely that he'll come out of the economic circumstance more than anything else. So long as he's committed to this project (should he join) I don't care if his what his original preference was.

I just think this season has sent fans into a state of disparity not being totally realistic. The club finished second last season which I acknowledge was fortunate due to rivals but the table doesn't lie and beforehand another top four finish was concluded.

The state of affairs are not as bad as many are making out. Even Ragnick has conceded it not having to take multiple years to gain some consistency as a club competitively. The issue of multiple player contracts running out and a poor dressing room team dynamic has been the cause of downfall that is solely the responsibility of the players. With the right culture being installed and 4 or more decent players there's no reason why the club can't be in a position to challenge by mid-late 2023/24. Challenge I do differentiate from competing, but given the level of City / Liverpool it will take the time to challenge first and then transition.

The negativity on this forum is ridiculous

Honestly more positive than I would have expected from Stone

Is this going to be one of them ones where we’re interested and submit an offer then when other clubs realise Barca are serious about selling they step in with an offer themselves but can also offer CL football? City for example.

If Ronaldo is staying, I think the club should spend on other positions.

Yes I can see that happening too he wants CL football something we can't offer him, however I do hop his past relationship with ETH get him to come here and hopefully get into CL next season.

It depends on how the deals are structured. £30m - £40m signings would be the way to go imo.

Rather that though. Nunez is a huge gamble, at least with FDJ we have a profile of a midfielder we've been clamouring for a while and a manager who's already got the best out of him. I'm willing to spend more on that as it's less of a gamble.

I really thought the days of spanking out massive money on players who don’t even want to leave their club were over. He’s obviously excellent but it’s difficult not to be pessimistic given our previous dealings.

why can’t our useless scouting department identify quality options that don’t cost a fortune coming from other big clubs for feck sake?

amazing how all these low-level twats come out of the wood-work and pretend to know about our transfer dealings

and it always seems to be, quite miraculously, in the following hours after a reputable source has already said it

If Domenech, Romero and Bechler are saying that he is leaving/Barcelona is open to offers, then that is the case.
The only hope is Ten Hag, whether he can persuade him.

I'm with you on the Frenkie train. He's a excellent player for the #6/#8 role, and we all know about his ability on the ball, but he's also quick and mobile in the defensive transition, which is also very important imo.

As much as I would love FDJ, there are some issues with pursuing this transer. If we could only sign one of the two, considering budget constraints, would it not make more sense to go for Tchouameni? He fills a critical need in the team, cause even if we got FDJ, we'd still need to get a DM to play alongside him.

Other issues to consider, getting FDJ does hinder Hannibal's integration into the first team as a deep lying playmaker. Unless ETH sees him best higher up the pitch? Plus getting FDJ, takes us completely out of running to potentially get Bellingham in a year's time when Dortmund are likely to sell. I'd rather a Bellingham - Tchouameni midfield than a FDJ-Fred/McT/Garner version.

Even without the manager being in sole charge of transfers, the club are still recruiting players to suit the way the manager plays.

And obviously players who have already played for him fit that mold more certainly than pretty much any other players would. As long as they're of sufficient quality, there's no reason for the club not to target them.

And the ETH players we've been linked with (De Jong, Antony and Timber) are all of sufficiently high talent that the club would have been following them anyway.

It just reeks of lazy scouting to me. Can't find good players for good value that have the right attributes a top team should have so instead just turn to the players the coach has managed before in the positions we're interested. The same sort of strategy that has had us spending huge chunks on 'names' rather than considering the fit of the player. Sancho, VDB, AWB, Maguire being some noticeable examples.

Personally I'm not sold on either Frenkie or Antony, high talent is a claim but they could easily be similar to VDB

It will come down to Ten Hag having enough pull to persuade him to come here over other clubs that can offer him CL football. Will them having a good relationship with each other be enough? I guess we’ll soon find out.

Imagine if our shit players had picked themselves up and made a proper fight for Top 4.. no CL is going to proper affect our summer this year.

Have you ever seen De Jong play?

A player of FDJ's quality doesn't fly under the radar at 25y age. A good scouting department could maybe find a 17y wunderkid that could become as good. We need someone to slot in instantly though.

How is FDJ similar to VDB (Or Antony for that matter)? FDJ has been a starter at Barcelona for 3 seasons, starts for Holland and is their best player alongside VVD.

I'd go with Tchouameni, because he'd be more important to the function of the system, both with and without the ball. In the EPL it's important to have a player like Tchouameni imo, if the aim is to play on the front foot.

I would absolutely love a summer of De Jong, Antony, Timber, Ndicka and Bissouma. Hopefully they can get Ajax to take £70-80m for both Antony and Timber, Ndicka is reportedly only going to cost 10m and Bissouma(hopefully his legal issue is sorted out over the summer) also just has a year left so should cost under 30m.

Timber bought initially to play as a RB then over coming seasons transitioning to CB when Maguire and Varane are being phased out. I don't think the prices quoted above are unrealistic either. A back four of Varane, Ndicka, Shaw and Timber, with a midfield base of De Jong and Bissouma should have the requisite skill need for possession football.

Martial can stay for next season providing back up to Ronaldo. Then a longterm striker purchase can be made when Ronny's contract is up, ideally Felix would have decided to leave Atletico then. Fantasy I know, but a man can dream.

This is my first summer being a part of this forum so now i get to see what being a muppet is all about.

... this one isn't going to happen...

He could be more difficult to get, it seems there is more competition at present as he's younger, cheaper, coming from a smaller club and would demand lower wages. Fairly credible reports that Liverpool and Chelsea are seriously sniffing around for him this summer.

Re. Bellingham we may not get him even if we want him and if ETH wants to play a 433 I don't think signing FDJ hinders that propsect of going for Bellingham as they are two very different kind of players.

May be???

How in the feck are poxy Newcastle more attractive?

Tchouameni or De Jong is exactly what we need. The board should go all out for these deals. At the moment, United might have to overpay a bit to attract one of the two, and it will be worth the trouble.

When people quote £150m for Rice and £50m+ for dross like Kalvin Phillips , £75m for De Jong would be an absolute steal.
