Yeah so where is the proof he is even remotely interested, have to say there hasn't been any evidence at all.

there has been loads of tweets saying personal terms wouldn't be a problem, from Reliable journalists.

“It’s always nice when teams show interest in you but I’m a Barcelona player” is all he really needed to say. Those saying it’s a nothing comment are a little too eager to ignore that fact that he doesn’t want to leave and continues to dig his heels in. I mean we’re about 3 weeks away from him doing these interviews in Barcelona pyjamas.

It’s a bit like when Pogba would go away with France and in some interview out of nowhere mention how he’s always liked the idea of playing in an all white kit and having Paella for tea. Then you’d get people rushing to defend him, acting like he hasn’t been shaking his arse at other clubs for the last 4 years. This summer is supposed to be about getting rid of players who don’t want to play for us, do we really want to buy another?

Yeah I really wanted to sign him at first, however starting to get sick of the Barca is my dream club in every interview, well bloody just stay there why don't you.

I'm not sure it's a "nothing comment." He's clearly making a point that he wants to stay at Barca and considers it the biggest club in the world. He's not throwing stones at United or anything but he's not saying "come get me" either. He clearly would like to stay. That's a bit worrying to me.

That's a pretty fair sentiment. But plenty of players that have left clubs without entirely wanting to and done pretty well. It shouldn't cause us to shy away.

Dating back some years sure but all I could think of right away:
Ibra, Vieira, Thiago Silva, Beckham, Stam, Ruud, Robben, Sneijder

He'll come because we're the only team in the market for him. He may have to come here kicking and screaming, mind.

Pretty much, and it's a shame as I hate signing players who don't want to actually play for us. My aversion to those players is overruled though by the need for a quality midfielder.

I want to feel like that but the noise about him just seems to be quietening

I dont really understand what people expect him to answer? Barcelona, thogheter with Real Madrid and Man Utd are the biggest (not best) clubs in the world, so him talking facts is nothing to get worried about. If he was 100% sure that he would not join us then i think he would say something like "yes im flattered but im staying in Barcelona for many years to come".

With that said, im not sure he will be a Man Utd player this summer but this comments didnt make me believe it more or less.

People want United to move on from reportedly the main target the manager wants

It's a weird thing to say if he's expecting to be joining United soon, he didn't need to go that far in his comments. Sounds like he still hasn't accepted he's leaving and is still digging his heels in.

What's wrong with showing respect to his current club? He looks like a common sense guy.

It will be an exhausting transfer window. I wish I could forget about football until GW1 and then see what happened.

How do you know he is the main target the manager wants? No manager would ever reveal this sort of thing IMO.

I’m not sure why everyone is so worked up over this one. He clearly doesn’t want to come here and he needs the right system around him to not be just another ordinary midfielder, which makes United a tricky team to thrive in for him right now.

GW1? I'm waiting for for first pre-season game. I want to see what ETH does with Garner, Hannibal and Mengi.
Me too actually, but then I'll be mad again when we are still in the same spot with de jong, timber, antony and all the ajax band

Probably because nearly every major newspaper has reported we're after him and good sources indicate we're willing to pay a significant portion of our budget to sign him. Do you believe there is a secret target that we are willing to pay huge money to sign that no one has detected?

Yeah, the right system... Not as if we just appointed the manager under which he probably displayed the best form of his career and will likely know how to best utilize him.

The one target at a time thing has been widely reported as was the bureaucracy and process when we go sign players.

This was definitely true under Woody and it seems to be true so far under Murtough as well.

One target at a time is quite a financial/linear budget-driven approach. If you have a fixed budget you want to adhere to, then you get your top priority target first then your 2nd and then see what's left in the kitty before going out to look for the alternatives.

I suspect that was how Woodward thought. This way he will always have a fixed budget and will always meet it. Its a 2D linear approach in a 3D transfer market environment.

Not saying we aren’t interested in signing him, I’m sure we are. But saying he’s the main target is just speculation. He could be second choice to someone even more unattainable or the main target could be someone in a different position. Newspapers reporting he’s the main target are probably just guessing that. There’s 0 chance ETH or the scouting team will reveal that kind of information as that puts them is a bad situation if he doesn’t sign.

I’m not saying ETH doesn’t know how to utilize him, it’s the supporting cast that doesnt inspire me much.

Good player, but to be honest, i'm a bit tired of this saga. I would give him/Barca a week to decides or we should move to another target.

I am sure we will have our 2nd choice already in the stove. Its ETH's first window, they will not feck it up for him.

He won't come. This is the typical United waste of time of every year. Maybe he will come next year, who knows.

Without UCL, again, this type of players rather play in other teams.

He rather lose in round of 16 in UCL with barca instead of having a fair chance of winning the europa league with us.
The overrating of the UCL is absurd.

Do you think negotiation for buying a player is linear? You bought a house before? And that's more straightforward than buying a player, especially at this level.

They're definitely not getting Silva?

They didn't have a place for FdJ, so why are they so worried about him going and helping the club stabilize financially? They have two young players who outperformed him in the position they tried to play him in.
Well, from what I'm reading, they'd be fine with it if they trusted the club to buy quality instead of who they've been linked to (aside from B.Silva who they think is a pipe dream). About 99% are fed up of Busquets and Frenkie leaving - alongside more advanced central midfielders being targeted instead of a deeper one - means more of him, too, which they're not happy about.

I wonder what’s the end game here. He obviously clinging onto them so hard. We are the only team right now who is ready to pay that amount of money to Barcelona for him. What if we pull out then what ? Reports say Barcelona and Xavi have told him that they have to sell him due to their financial mess. He has been underwhelming for them anyway. He also acknowledges that they aren’t playing him in his favoured role.

Even without their current economic situation, de jong’s transfer to Barca haven’t worked out and doesn’t seem to be working out in the future too due to Xavi’s style of play. Now add their financial woes and it becomes apparent that they would be absolutely desperate to sell him. But they aren’t as they should. Something doesn’t add up here. Either Barcelona aren’t in crisis economically as it’s portrayed or they aren’t as desperate to sell de Jong as it’s mentioned.

If Barca condition is so critical then why the hell they are are trying to play the waiting game when June 30th is approaching fast. Why they aren’t panicking like shit and pushing him out of the door as soon as possible ? We aren’t offering them peanuts you know. As i said, what if we pull out due to them being stubborn and de Jong’s reluctance then what ? Something doesn’t add up here.

I know players get loyalty bonus for not asking for a transfer.. that's why they are often reluctant to put in a transfer request.
Apparently Barca were handing out crazy loyalty bonuses.. Pique is owed something like 80m at the end of his contract.
His wages are going up again next season..

Barca want to cash in.. they tried with Dembele.. he didnt move in Jan and now he either goes on a free or gets a big contract at Barca..
midfield is the position they can lose a player and FDJ is on big wages and get get a big transfer fee..

He clearly likes it at Barca.. He would be fine if he stayed on.. he needs to stay quiet, not burn bridges and he'll get games if he stays on..

Barca are the ones in a hurry.

It really is between 2 desperate clubs to sort out the fee.. I hope we dont bend over like we have been doing for several years now.

In getting the best price patience is the key. We know that both sides are desperate to either sell of buy him. So its a matter of who blinks first.
You don't expect some progression in this negotiation to be linear or have some development every day. ETH only started working for United like 2 1/2 weeks ago.

We need to know when to walk away - we were smart when we refused to pay the 120 million asking price for Sancho a couple of years ago, and should be willing to walk away if Barcelona refuse to lower their asking price or de Jong is really hesitant. We didn't walk away from AWB and Maguire deals when the prices stopped making sense and we regret making those deals today. We should be going all in for these kind of huge deals if the player in question is one of the best in the world in their position which Maguire and AWB were not, and as good as de Jong is, I don't think that he is in that absolute top tier of midfielders based on his performances over the last few years.

My biggest issue is what wages he would expect. Isn't he on roughly 400k per week at Barcelona?

I just hope we have set a strict deadline internally, and that we also have a backup lined up and ready to go. De Jong would definitely prefer to stay at Barca. If they sort their shit out by signing some deal, then it’s likely he will stay. So keeping a backup plan handy is the way to go.
