Again, alarm bells. If he doesnt cost a huge amount to replace then he's not worth a huge amount.

Messi was the best player in the world, on wages that reflected that and is past his best at 33 when he left. Despite that they tried to keep him to the last minute and find out a way to pay his wages. He's also talked about going back there, maybe the De Jong sale will make the wages available for that to happen

Instead they're pushing De Jong out the door as fast as they can

Again he will without doubt improve us. But he's done the big transfer huge wages thing with Barcelona and this is the result of it, so if we do the same thing It'll probably be Pogba again which was a similar thing for us. Huge money, not a good return at all
Or Barca are just fortunate that they have very good young talent in that particular position.

The rest of your post may come true and I understand why you and others are scarred by Pogba.

I've seen a lot of posts on reddit about them poaching a huge pool of Sky News/Sports workers and that's why we never get a Romano/Orny/Stone "main person". It's like a weird collective of news folk we've never heard about which are "Talksport sources". They are the serious side and then they've got their shit clickbait side.

Thats the thing, no one has a clue, but there is the absolute trash "Talksport" and then there is "Talksport sources" and for some bizarre reason, they are well connected and just nothing like the dumpster fire that is "Talksport"

It’s ever since they poached Jim White from SSN. Mr reliable.
Just such a strange way to go about your business, being known as the click baitiest media around and then coming up with this stuff.

Wonder what the thinking behind this business model is.

It's a bit arrogant from Manchester United to brief Laurie Whitwell (of all people!) they think they have got De Jong in the bag. And the player wants to come. Let's see if Barcelona or De Jong give United the slap down. Because all United fans on Twitter and social media are going crazy and celebrating now think we are signing De Jong now.. Barcelona or De Jong will be asked about this surely as it's a massive update.

We will know very quickly if this is doable. But it'll be embarrassing if United spend all summer on this deal and don't sign him. Because they have briefed Laurie Whitwell they are focused on De Jong they better get it over the line otherwise the anger fron the fans WILL overspill. After coming off our worst Premier League season ever and other teams have already signed players.. the fanbase are desperate for some positivity.. a signing ANY signing even a right-back or Eriksen

United better get this done now. Or they risk a toxic atmosphere at Old Trafford from the first match.
You signed up to a Manchester United forum to say this?

I’ve never actually noticed this, but this is pretty interesting. Will keep my eye out on this going forwards.

Not really how it works though? Sneijder, Robben, Sanchez, Fabregas, Ozil, Ibra, etc all moved on from Barca/Madrid for one reason or another and were world class at their other clubs. Sometimes the fit just isn't the best. Frenkie de Jong, as discussed before, is best when used as the key player for the build up. Barcelona use Busquets as that, and Pedri as the key for the midfield control. De Jong by all accounts was very good in his first 2 years, but this year with Xavi just didn't fit in as well (but his own personal performances from what I read are consistent and decent, even if it's not his natural role). And we look at what we need, and that suits Frenkie perfectly. We need someone who will start the build up and be that deep midfield playmaker. Barcelona need an advanced playmaker. We tried to shoehorn Pogba as the deep playmaker when he likes being the advanced, so it's the opposite of that situation.

Were they all worth what he's going to cost and the no doubt high wages since it cant be much less (maybe more?) than at Barcelona?

I havent suggested he wont be a very good player for us. But I'm not sure he's going to have much more of an effect than Pogba where the finances were similar. Hopefully more consistently performing than Pogba, and maybe we find a position for him which we didnt with Pogba... But then again the excuse right now is "Barcelona didnt play him in the right position" - We just had that with Pogba, and several other players, so theres no guarantee we wont hear the same excuse here that hes not in the right position

Essentially what I'm suggesting is, I'm going to be very skeptical if we announce a similar deal to the one he got at Barcelona. And given how much we like to overspend I can see that happening...

Instead given all the circumstances, Barcelona not wanting him, his transfer there clearly not being the succcess they anticipated with the huge build, etc then we should be getting the player at a cut priceand him taking his wages down a reasonable level. If that happens I'll be happy because he clearly has quality on the ball.

Messi is shit mate, too old and way past his prime.

I mean, just let the negative nancies be negative. You will never be able to change their mind.
Seems to be the way.
Don’t think I saw one post questioning De Jong until it now looks as if he’s coming!
Barca will be sellling off the assets and replacing them with youth products and frees, I just hope we are in front of the queue next season for their next forced sale as well.

There are no parallels with Pogba at all, who was not pushed out of Juventus and whom they would have happily kept. Only similarity is that they are both midfielders who are valued above a few million pounds. So unless the argument is that we should stop buying good players (which seems to have been an indirect argument on here for quite a while tbh), I don't get the comparison.

It won’t cost a huge amount to replace because they have Pedri and Gavi. They already have his replacements. And that’s not a red flag because they’re both amazing talents.

Now even I am getting sucked into this.... He's honestly a brilliant player.

Stop saying 'brief', not all sources are 'briefs' from the club. The idea the football club needs to send out 'briefs' to placate jittery lunatics on the Internet who couldn't point to Old Trafford on a map is a joke. Your second week of June meltdown is of no consequence.

To save yourself the grief  best bet would be to watch out for the "Talksport Sources" tweets. I can never recommend to anyone to actually consume Talksport content

I think we are going to do this one and he will be our first signing. He's the player we need the most too. I can see us bringing in Frankie, Antony, another more defensive midfielder, a defender and a free transfer (hopefully Erkisson). I'd be happy with that window. Can't change the world in one summer.
I think you are being greedy there. It's hard to do all that list in 1 window (5 quality players in total).

The two assets that Barca were thinking of selling was Gavi or De Jong. They couldn’t sell Gavi since he has one year left and would get more for De Jong so here we are. It’s nothing to do with who they rate.

Nah there were alot of posts comparing him to Di Maria. Now they are comparing him to Pogba. Not long before they start comparing him to Bebe and Djemba-Djemba.

Ten Hag has proved that a midfield of frenkie de jong and VDB can work against top level opposition but we’re just missing the schone type of player that he had at Ajax… I’ve got a feeling he’s gonna play FDJ as the furthest midfielder back with either VDB/Fred/mctominay playing as box to box and Bruno. I’d be happy if we get him and then get a cb and full back and then go in for another midfielder next summer.

That’ll be an absolute extraordinary window if we managed all that

Surely we would have to get rid off a couple to manage all that?

 good post to be fair

Of course they were? They all became legends at future clubs and were the key players in CL wins/runs and title wins (barring Ozil and Sanchez, since Arsenal). But even those 2 were obviously world class. The fact that Barcelona is ok to sell him doesn't have anything to do with it really. They just want to build towards a different type of midfielder. Pedri is their star to build around, so Frenkie will always be 2nd there and him and Pedri together isn't really a natural pairing given the roles each like to have. Pedri is much more of your traditional Barcelona midfielder like Xavi/Iniesta, rather than Frenkie being more of a Modrić type who likes to operate in the positions late career Scholes liked to operate. That's not your typical Barca midfielder.

And like I said, it's very different to Pogba. Pogba was an advanced player who likes operating in the opposition's half and hates playing in our half, yet we shoe horned him as a deep playmaker. Frenkie is naturally that. And we have Ten Hag in who used him perfectly and had the system where De Jong first stood out. So I wouldn't be concerned with that at all. Personally, he's one where I don't give a feck about the finances. Tchouameni would have been another. They are players who I'm convinced are the right options and the best possible options we could dream of for those roles, so getting them in is the most important. He's a very unique player with a skill set that only a handful of players in Europe have, so if you can get that in with a system that works for him, then you do it. Just look at the difference he makes for Netherlands. He comes in, and he's instantly one of the top 3 midfielders in the league with Thiago and De Bruyne.

Ronaldo, Grealish, Messi leaving, Super League, Woodward Leaving

"Talksport Sources" are borderline direct club briefs. Whomever they got behind the scenes is well connected.
No they aren't. They said we were interested in Ox just yesterday.

Also, it was Howson / Rio that first leaked Ronaldos switch if I am not mistaken. Talksport just ride off whatever they see on twitter.

United under Woodward were absolutely briefing lunatics, but that's because he was an unqualified idiot when it came to running a football club. Whether anything has changed in that respect...who knows ;)

Talksport didn’t break the Ronaldo move. Ole had a press conference essentially confirming with a wink wink we would go for him and pep said Ronaldo will decide where he goes. Plus Rio was hinting stuff even before this. There was shed tons of smoke well before that tweet.

Seeing those updates today, I have been pulled in and am now hopeful:(
Would be a dream signing if we can pull it off, finally replacing Scholes properly. Would definitely be a statement signing and hugely accelerate our progression with Ten Hag.

Talksport is not "Talksport Sources'

I'm no expert on finance but even if we pay a fee upfront we'll still amortise it on the books over the length of the contract, won't we?

My understanding was that incomings counted as if you were paid upfront and outgoings amortised over time, regardless of the actual situation.
Yes and how we account for the spend is a different matter to the actual structure of the deal. If the numbers of are true, and Barca is requesting for us to pay most of the fee upfront, I can see why United only offered 45M. My point was that we can easily go up to 60M over 5 years and in actuality spend less due to time value of money.

Barce are desperate for money and the rise of Gavi and Pedri allows them to sell a midfielder to raise funds.

FdJ is class and we won’t find a better midfielder this window.

We are this close.

FUy_LEmUAAMZHo4
Good to know we have him in our back pocket

Is deJong likely to come here still? Alternatively I see Liverpool have released Origi, different type of player but still very good.

Should be a great signing! Need some more midfielders though because there’s no chance we keep everyone fit and the drop off is still far too big.

I love the fact the Nou_camp99 hasn't replied or posted at all since @Mr Pigeon epic takedown reply earlier on
Always believed in people doing what they want and not be so judgey. I can't imagine myself playing video games heading into my 40's. But if thats peoples thing then thats absolutely fine and are doing no harm. I mean for god sake they could be doing much worse things than playing video games

The poster should have said the actually don't need to replace him because they've already got replacements in Gavi and Pedri, both younger and on lower wages. The one they will need to replace/get a back up for is Busquets and they're bringing in Kessie in the DM position.

The question is if you play them now why would you stop. You don't actually change that much over the years. You don't wake up one morning and suddenly find yourself wearing tweed and tending to your rose bushes.
