The most unsatisfying summer saga ever. Rejected by a player in favour of their current club, who’s publicly shat on him whilst pulling the most arcane financial stunts to sign a new team. Farce doesn’t even begin to touch it
I would hesitate to join United at the moment if i were him but there should be other options available for a player like him but it seems like he has captured the Stockholm syndrom.

We have a player worth 80 million and earning 20 per year to be the substitute of an 18 year old kid that came from our youth ranks and hasn't even signed a first team contract yet. Kind of absurd. The only way I see this ending well is if Frenkie learns to play properly in Busquets position since he is leaving next summer.
But what I saw vs Real Sociedad kind of tells me he won't fit in that role.

Understandably, Gavi is still wildly inconsistent. He was excellent yesterday, but cannot be relied upon to deliver throughout the course of a season.

Kessie has a different profile. Pedri has had issues with his fitness. Busquets will no doubt struggle in higher intensity games.

I’m sure FDJ will have a massive part to play in midfield and on balance should currently be starting over Gavi.

Sport pissing on our chips again this morning

If true, you really do wonder what sort of mind control tricks Barcelona use to get multiple players to take large salary reductions, so Barcelona can use that money to go ahead and sign more players on just as much if not more money than you. “We’re a family here!” Crazy.

At this point he's probably not the sort of character we want for this new build of the club. It's one thing a club legend like Pique taking a wage cut, for me, its still quite embarrassing to allow yourself to be mugged off, but with him I can understand, but someone like De Jong? Bit weak, shows that he's quite happy to cruise through his career already.

Lets actually continue just signing players who are truly dedicated to coming here, it has to benefit us long term.

It seems like lifestyle and being employed to Barca is more important than playing time and being respected. We really should avoid signing him

I'm sorry but how can any Barca fan justify this as the behaviour of an ambitious player? It's one thing wanting to stay there, but this is blatant disrespect by the club and he's accepting it. If my current company told me to take a pay cut I'd be out of there immediately, there's something called self respect in this world.

I can understand not wanting to come to Utd, but to allow yourself to be treated like that, wow!!

He is sitting on a multi million contract at the club he considers to be the epitome of club football. He backs himself to eventually force his way into the team ahead of the likes of Gavi, Busquets and Kessie - all of whom he is better than currently. Plus Barcelona have assembled a seriously good team that should compete for all the accolades this year. On top of that his wife loves it there by all accounts, so my guess is that he is hoping to ride out the storm.

I don't see any issues with him staying there on his current contract, but if he does take a paycut, wow, what a **** he would be.

agree with the last paragraph but there has been no indication at all (in fact completely the opposite) that fdj will agree to reduce his salary.
I think he’ll hold on, he’s under no obligation to accept any proposal.

If he’d rather take a pay cut to sit on the bench we’re better off looking elsewhere anyway

it’s weird though, why would he string ETH along only to do this?

feels like there’s more to this story

The problem is, I don’t actually believe the 17m is the problem. I’m sure FDJ wants his 17m but I’m also convinced Utd would happily pay it.

I don’t believe the rumours that FDJ only wants Barca to pay it out of principle. Footballers don’t care less where the money comes from as long as they get it. I don’t think FDJ would choose to stay just because Barca didn’t pay the money from their own pocket.

I just think the guy just doesn’t want to leave due to many factors including non-football related like lifestyle, spouse wishes etc.
All good points and plausible in my opinion.

Lately I was persuaded by a theory that he wants more than £17m, that he also feels he is due loyalty bonuses (and god knows what else) totalling a further £10m+.

This would explain why nobody wants to just swallow that. We probably feel the fee we agreed with Barca should be our total outlay and that the “disputed” money is for FDJ and Barca to sort out. Any attempt to get us to pay it is effectively just increasing the transfer fee taking it to £100m+. At that point it is nothing to do with the principle it is the actual amount of money that is the problem.

I’m as much in the dark as the next guy but the above is persuasive to me.

Really gotta wonder whats going on in his head or what external pressures are being placed on him if this is true.

For all the reports saying he has no intention of taking a pay cut, to come out now and take one would be a bit odd

Yes, no longer signing players who believe they are above the club and are somehow doing United an honor by allowing us to pay their wages. These are the kind of players who down tools the fastest when things get rough and start looking for a way out (AdM, Pogba, Ronaldo).

This is why I am so happy with our recruitment so far this summer. All the players that have signed for us so far recognised the state that we are in currently yet still pushed to sign for us.

You have to look at the card you've been dealt with:

1. Woodward put players on such obscene contracts, that really difficult to ship players on. Remember, players also well within their rights to stay and pick up the money they've agreed to, if a suitable solution cannot be found.

2. These free players were out of the control of the new regime. Plus, referring back to point 1, these players probably would have still been here and we'd have struggled to have moved them on.

3. Looks like we sold the players we could. Henderson is a player EtH would probably like to keep but he didn't want to wait around to prove himself. The rest, either young players on loan, or refer back to point 1.

4. Antony is late in the window, however, by even reading what Antony said to Fabrizio a few days back, and other reports, Ajax kept moving the price goal posts. Not much more United could have done.

5. Majority of fans have bemoaned the quality of our signings for the past decade. We got rid of the main scouts, and their scouted players clearly weren't what was needed. It will take time to replace that structure. So in the meantime, out of lack of choice, we have backed our manager, and given him what he wants. Also, going by recent games, all of his signings have proven good buys...even though it ia still early.
You do realize that the "new regime" of Richard Arnold and Murtough have been here for years and they were also big part of the mess that you are blaming on just Woodward?

I simply cannot believe he’s going to agree to another salary reduction, never mind not being paid yet his deferred wages. What a person and what a club, they deserve each other

I agree. We made an offer and it was accepted. I don't think we'd do that without indications from the player he'd come here. Something smells fishy.

I refuse to believe he wants to stay on the bench and take a 40% wage decrease at a club that threatened to sue him. I’m still expecting a twist.
Yeah, reports that he is negotiating a pay reduction are a bit misleading, I think. There was a report that he was negotiating a further deferral. I don’t see them reaching agreement on that. For Barca it just postpones the problem and potentially makes it worse in the future.

Barcelona accepted the offer, not the player.
If I remember correctly when they accepted the bid, we hadn’t even begun talking about personal terms.

It’s simple - he doesn’t want to move, his wife loves living there and doesn’t want (or allow?) to move. Barcelona tried to get rid, they can’t.

Maybe he gave a vague “I might join” answer to ETH, just in case Barcelona go hard in pushing him out.

I think this is where Xavi stepped up and said he wants him. That really sealed the deal.

Again - a player who prefers to take a pay cut to stay at this catalonian circus than join us should stay there and never ever be anywhere near Manchester United.

It looks more like the clubs wanted to make this deal but the player was insisting to stay
True, it does look like that. It surprises me, though, because we reached a club fee agreement and there's the existing FDJ/Ten Hag connection. But, yeah, it seems like he doesn't want to come here. I wonder if Casemiro and Anthony signings may yet sway him.

That was a horrific post that was delusional as feck.

It’s easy to say you’ll give up 17m when it’s not your money. If FDJ wanted to take the easy way out, he would have just signed for us and got us to pay a higher sign on bonus.
Personally, if I were in his shoes, it wouldn't be about the money to a point. But the way they've treated him, again if it was me, I'd want every penny from them just to spite them. I'd give it to charity just to prove a point.

He'll make plenty of money throughout his career, and I'm sure he's already a very rich young man. Money isn't everything, but principles and values are what makes a man. It's refreshing to see the little guy sticking it to the man, so to speak.

Some of you giving up already. Pathetic.

FIGHT..........and WIN!

Obviously we don't know everything that went on behind the scenes, but I find it hard not to really judge the guy for letting himself get treated in this way.

Seems odd. The whole narrative early on was how he won’t leave until he gets his deferred wages, now he’s willing to just take a pay cut?

Se queda obviously

There was only one outcome, staying at Barca, even on a salary reduction. Since they dont need to sell him if he reduces his wages, this one is clear. Seems he has decided to take a paycut rather than moving.
