Problem is he hasn't squirmed about staying during this whole saga so don't see that changing. I had the tiniest hope until that Whitwell & Stone brief when we agreed deal for Casemiro.
And then the very next day it was known that we were going to spend spend spend in order to save our season.

If he wanted to come it would be done already. At this point, I'm not even sure if it is worth getting in a player whose heart is not fully in especially with such massive fans expectation.

Says someone that's never been owed £17 million

At this point I'd be stunned if United hadn't offered to pay the difference as part of a transfer fee. Honestly, we're paying over 80m for Antony and what, 70m for de Jong? Nah, if this was all about the money I think something would have given on our end when we're at this point... but I hope I'm very, very wrong.

Seen a lot of conflicting stuff about whether United is even allowed to. As in, the way the money comes in for Barca makes a big difference. Did that ever get confirmed or corrected?

It was mentioned once, by a single source, if I'm not mistaken. I don't know why it became gospel.

I can't imagine what law in either Spain or England would prevent a new club from paying a signing bonus to a new player that represents roughly the same amount (or 10x more or one tenth) the previous club owed that player but that was rescinded by mutual consent of the player and that club.

Yeah agreed. It's nonsense.

I wish I could bet that. Worth $25 on a flyer. Unfortunately, I can't bet on skybet or any site that offers these props.
if he wanted chelsea why isn’t he there now? they were never really interested

Exactly

Makes sense to me.

If he’s out of the first team picture this season he may be happy to come here next season. That would be fine with me.

Van der Kraan said on sky when he talked about us withdrawing the offer that he doubted United would make an offer that covered the wages because FDJ wants it from Barcelona. That sounds like it's not just about the money but the principal and can only be sorted out between FDJ and Barca.

So that would he'll be open to a move if that's resolved.

Good point, remember hearing that from him as well

So his initial wage of €270k/week, was reduced to €58k/week in 20/21 and €173k/week in 21/22.

This left the deferred wage (€77k/week for four years) to be added to his initial €270k. So, he's supposed to be paid €347k/week now till 24/25, and €366k in his final year (25/26).

Crazy

Great post, thanks for the figures. Illustrates that talk of United having to pay him £400k+ pw is wide of the mark. We’d happily match his 250/300k ish wage as long as he sorts his deferred money and he’d be good value for it.

Anyway, let’s see if he plays tonight, whether he starts or is on the bench and go from there. Still a small chance we get him I thinks.
(When do we get the Barca team news?)

Still think we're in there with a chance, but he'll absolutely start since Busquets is suspended

This one still feels so weird. No hint at all that he’ll come to Utd or even leave Barça at all anymore, but still has the atmosphere or voice in the back of your head saying he’ll definitely come. Maybe because it dragged on for so long.

But I remember early-mid July it was just waiting for the confirmation, especially after the (alleged?) confirmed deal, but now it’s just based on “intuition” (aka difficulty letting go of the earlier idea of it bound to happen any time now).

But who knows, maybe

things are happening.

Or not. I hope it does, I really do. The sudden (relative) slowness in this thread for the past week make things feel like a ghost town.

I think in Spain they have to hand in the XI an hour before, so probably at 9PM. With their preseason in mind I can see Kessie start (or even Pjanic ) though.

Maybe there is some "interest" on top of the deferred amounts written into the contract, as compensation for the delayed payment?

ITV4 are showing the Real Sociedad v Barcelona game tonight if anyone wants to muppet on de Jong.

Just be thankful it's finally over in a week's time!

It's Barcelona, would it really surprise you?

None of this makes any sense, but here we are
It wouldn’t surprise me but somehow you can never quite get used to Barca’s appalling behaviour. They are directly asking Frenk to give up his contracted wages so they can give the money to another player. It’s incredible and yet typical of them.

What? This is groundbreaking news by Romero!
Funny how that conversation goes: he Frankie, lower your salary for a player wjo will play instead of you.
They know he is too expensive to sit on the bench but he can rot there if he is not keen to move and loves being treated like crap
