I still think its the plan. They MUST have a deal with Frenkie and his agent privately no matter what is being said given how long theyve been chasing him despite all the reports of him just saying point blank no
Wishful thinking more like. Barca, despite all the issues, would prefer to keep him and have him sign another contract. They dont need to sell him either, just male sure he earns less. On top, it looks like his interest in us is very small.

General affinity for Ten Hag, since 90% of our population is an Ajax fan (feels like that anyway). It's also a general dislike of the way Barcelona are treating him, which is a big shift, because Barcelona and Ajax have always been quite close due to their belief that they invented the proper way to play football (barf).

for me personally, I like United loathe Barcelona and the Spanish league and think De Jong is an amazing player who would fit in well. So my fingers are still firmly crossed, but meh, I kind of lost hope :(
I was going to mention Barca's treatment and the love-in, but know you're not Ajax, so avoided

Yeah, makes for a pleasant turnaround: felt like we were an enemy of the state for the perceived treatment of LVG, Memphis and Donny.

Nice to know you guys want us to win through on this one!

swear to god, if we go from 60 to 100 million for Antony and the only thing that stopped FDJ coming to us was not paying the alleged payout that barca are refusing to pay, i'll fecking lose it.:nervous:

Yeah same, that would be absolutely terrible
This much I can agree with.

All the briefings post-casemiro are essentially "well MUFC won't spend 80+ million on a second CM in one window".

Nothing about why that would be, nothing about being rejected by FDJ, nothing about FDJ deciding to just sit there and make his full wage. It's been a VERY quiet briefing to MUFC-aligned journos. And now to watch MUFC go crawling back to Ajax after they put up a "feck off" price on Antony, when we have no actual explanation on why FDJ's deal may have ended, is frankly piss boiling.

That's heartwarming to hear, I suppose the general consensus is the same as van Basten alluded to in his interview a while ago?

Those players you cite in the opening of your post. The same dross has been chatted about the same dross for years now. People never seem to learn in that respect and I suspect they never will.

And "two fantastic signings"? Besides the fact this is no guarantee, search the Caf for use of that phrase (replacing the word two for three) during the summer of 2019. The amount of people truly convinced (or at least trying to convince themselves) of this is startling. Ironically this also includes the most expensive of those signings and a player you now wish to see relegated to the bench.
The issue then was we didn’t have a manger capable of implementing a game plan whereas we do now as well as a better overall way of playing and not living in the past.

I wasn’t hailing Maguire as the worlds best defender back when he signed, good player but lacked the pace for what we needed even then. The two signing we have made have been needed for longer than 3 years as well, we haven’t had a proper CDM or RW in years, it’s embarrassing to say the least. This results in the rest of the dross having to play out of position and not consistently enough in one position. Martial has played all over the front line due to no RW. Sancho the same, Bruno was played all the midfield to accommodate Pogba and also due to a lack of a CDM.

Matic was past his best when he arrived, still good but not good enough.
I’m not putting my neck out and saying these two signings will transform us but it will bring stability to the lineup and hopefully breed consistency.

Malacia looks a cracking player and should be starting ahead of Shaw. Still a project to be completed but encouraging signings so far in areas that needed addressed.

put it this way, we've briefed honestly on multiple occasions when deals fail. we just briefed Rabiot was a money grabbing cnut so we moved on.

we go get Casemiro and now the FDJ brief is "well can MUFC really spend huge money on two CMs?" What? excuse me?

This comes at the same time we are now getting stories of "Antony back on the cards for 100m after MUFC had 60 and 80m bids rejected."

there has to be some kind of closure on how/why we didn't get FDJ.

The players we've signed or look like definitely signing really wanted to come to United. That's the difference. De Jong's first choice has always been to stay at Barcelona, which seems to be because he loves that team and wants to recoup a huge amount of deferred salary. It may be the only reason he hasn't left is because the deferred salary hasn't been paid, or it may be that he and his partner love living in Barcelona. It may be a bit of everything.

Until the window's closed or United say he's no longer being pursued, it's not a dead situation. The signings we're making right now may change de Jong's mind, who knows?

all fair and logical points. As long as we get a proper explanation at some point, that's all i can hope for. Because right now, i'm watching the Woodward 2.0 circus coming to town, and it doesn't feel great.

There wont be any closure on FDJ until the window shuts. Regardless of casemiro signing we still need someone who can dictate play from out the back and be press resistant. Erikkson may have to fill the role if we dont get anyone, he can dicate play but obviously isnt press resistant.

The Athletic video about casemiro that was released today ("what he brings to Utd"), pretty much says the same thing. Out of possesion casemiro will be great. In possession utd still need someone to recieve the ball from the keeper and CBs. Its why FDJ is so important to ETH plan. Obviously abit of a cock up that we didnt have fabien ruiz sown up as a FDJ alternative and PSG swooped in and got him.

All briefings mention that we're after another midfielder. All of them.

Who are the midfielders we've been linked to? Nobody except from SMS which I think is a tenuous link.

It's quite clear we're still waiting on De Jong. I see us caving in and partially covering his deferred salary.

Barca have seen us spend heavy on Casemiro and Antony. They will want to drag this out till the end to avoid paying €20m.

He simply doesn't want to come and if he leaves will go to Chelsea. Let's just go for the same profile instead of leaving it late like we have for the majority of this window:wenger:

I'm an eternal optimist. I will say it is still on.

All briefings have gone along the lines of "unlikely" rather than saying we have ended our interest completely.

Someone needs to make a thread about whether de jong is the best midfielders of all time or not after today's game.

Worked for cas.

Are you ITK or just offering an opinion?

Obviously an opinion, but an educated one going by how the window has gone and how sources have reported the transfer in the last 14 weeks. Surely there is a player who offers the same progressive qualities? Maybe not to the same level but to a good one which will complement Casemiro's strengths and the managers tactical requirements.

There’s literally zero briefings saying that. Quite the opposite actually.

The issue with this deal is De Jong doesn’t want to move.

If that changes this week then United will be in for him.

No question about it.
