Something hasn't sat right with me throughout all of this.

Chelsea had nothing to lose by putting a bid in right away. All the reports, if you chose to believe them, said that he wanted to join them, so why wait? Surely thats showing hesitation on Chelseas end? If he TRULY wanted to go to Chelsea, as soon as the bid went in, and they paid his wages off, he'd be gone.
People say they don't want to get burned again... why would it matter? They've got the money to just go elsewhere again.

It is a weird narrative that doesn’t really go along with how all their other business this summer has been handled.

I feel like they’ve been waiting to see if our deal would collapse and then they’d swoop. Maybe our deal has collapsed with Chelsea now sniffing around, maybe it hasn’t. Guess we’ll find out very soon.

Probably didn't want to waste time negotiating a fee, writing up bid documents until they knew. The fact they're at least doing that now suggests he's on the move.

Wheres the tweet that says Chelsea has agreed terms? Must have missed that one

It says Chelsea are going to pay the same and the decision is with the player. I’m not saying it’s correct, but the article quite clearly states it’s Frenkie’s decision to make.

If you going to be pedantic and claim that there is no official wording about terms being agreed with Barca then fair enough. The most important part is that it’ll be Frenkie’s choice (if their information is correct).

But why would it matter?
And how do we know that they're actually agreeing a fee and submitting a bid? The last reliable stuff we heard was still just interest?

I’d love if someone who wasn’t a poster on here or didn’t really like football read through this thread to see what their reaction would be. “Mental illness”, I imagine.

Open question to all -

Over the last decade when United have been in battle for a key player against a better team, they've just thrown the money at it.

Chelsea need a defender and a striker more and with De Jong too, they're closing in on £400m spent. Surely there's a limit to what they can spend on a midfielder. They can't just keep spending.

So... Do you think should just throw the money at it again and blow Chelsea out the water to avoid the backlash if they don't sign him - Or should they stay true to their limits and risk the likelihood he'll choose Chelsea if money is similar?
At this moment in time it feels like this is our only hope now.

We love to throw out ridiculous wages and I can’t see why we wouldn’t do it now in a pretty desperate situation. Even if it’s just to save face.

I can see us offering him 400k or maybe even more. It’s whether chelsea would match it and also whether FDJ would think the difference in wages is big enough for him to choose us.

It does raise the issue of us not having a great record with players who have come to us just because of the money. But right now it’s probably another risk we have to accept.

I didn't see any tweet, hence why i asked. The guys who are reliable have said it's still just interest, so i thought maybe they'd said differently.
I don't know whats happening, it's just a complete mess

I am amazed how low people think of us, that’s all. I feel confident that we will beat Chelsea if he moves from Barca. We are not in the CL, but we will be soon enough. We are a much bigger club than them and we got a excellent manager in EtH.

So yes, if it’s between us and Chelsea, we will show everyone who we are.

So no tongue in cheek or itk act. It’s pure confidence in us. Can end in tears though.

It's just being realistic though. All the noise is that he wants to go there, there's no smoke without fire. The stories that they'd only go for him if they were sure he wanted to join them, and then now working on the offer, suggests they've had satisfactory discussions.

If everyone was saying he wants us and not Chelsea then that would be different. But us being linked to all these other midfielders and reportedly close to giving up... You can't ignore it and pretend to be confident.

This has dragged on so much I am barely excited about the prospect of him playing for us, I just want us to sign him so that Gerard Romero and Managing Barca look like mugs.

I'm starting to feel like even if Utd do sign him he won't be as good as the hype of this thread is suggesting he will be

I've just been describing Barcelonas transfer window and she definitely thought I was mental so yeah I'd agree

Challenge. Accepted.

As Chelsea hasn’t pulled the trigger on this one yet, what if he is a alternative to Fofana ? Let’s say they have about 100m still to spend and first choice is Fofana but if a deal can’t be struck with Leicester they’ll throw it at De Jong because why not?

Doesn't Chelsea have enough players in his position. They really don't need him this summer, this seems like a future buy and an opportunistic transfer. On the other hand they are in need of a CB, may be they can play him as a CB since he plays there for Barca.

I think if it wasn’t for the eventful transfer saga Chelsea have experienced this summer, they would have probably already put the bid in as soon as they were interested.

But that fact they did this with Raphina and Kounde and still ended up missing out with a lot of embarrassment, they probably approached this more cautiously.

Ultimately, it doesn’t matter if a bid has gone in yet or not for me. It doesn’t take long to agree on a fee. As soon as chelsea know there’s a deal to be done with the player, the fee is just a formality. Chelsea not putting a bid in yet is not really an advantage we have over them at the moment.

Anyone know roughly what time the Talk of Devils podcast comes out? It's every Thursday right? So should hear something soon I bet from Mitten again

All the noise is he wants to go there, and i bet at least 99% of it is pure opinion. Because de Jong hasn't actually said anything, it's hard to say what he'd want. Reporters are just using the CL as the main reason as to why he'd want to go to Chelsea. Ornstein says that there's no preference and that CL won't be the deciding factor. Question there is, who do we believe

Until we officially say anything about our offer etc then there must be some indication that all is not lost.

Frenkie’s agent manages about 4 of our players and was Malacia’s agent. There must be open dialogue and certainly if there was a definite no-way then we would know.

I don’t buy into all this hysteria that we are just flapping around in the dark waiting without any idea what the player wants.

That's not to say though that if another better offer comes to the table that wouldn’t change things.

I thought there had been a lot of stories saying Chelsea are pushing on. One of the Chelsea posters gave a run down last night and said Boehly has been having telephone conversations with him. Definitely not 'just interest' which would make no sense right now as it looks like coming to a head. They're either in or they're not.

Like they say, you only see who's swimming naked when the tide recedes. In the same way, you only know who's had proper sources and who's spouting nonsense to fill the information void after the transfer is complete, one way or another.

In which De Jong told Chelsea that he won't leave Barcelona, according to the same reports

He’ll probably tell us he’s even more confident than last week that the FDJ situation will be decided soon. :wenger:

Fabrizio retweeted

Full-moon sources have told us that Barca's 'demands' are actually for Chelsea to stop calling them now because it is getting creepy. "At first we thought it was a good move to use the Chelsea lever, but in hindsight...".

So has anything actually changed with the situation then?

I honestly hope they don't, I know we shouldn't care about how much the club pays, but it's an upward spiral and that's a big part of how Barcelona got in their mess. We need to eventually cull the stupid contracts like De Gea and Ronaldo and set a reasonable structure.

It's all from Ben Jacobs i'd imagine, but no one really knows how reliable he is. Some say he is, most say he's not amazingly so. I have no idea. I'm not doubting that Chelsea are in for him, but saying that Boehly has been on the phone to him often... how exactly would they know? Have they tapped phone lines and the sorts? I think a lot of that is just speculation and opinion to build a narrative. Bit like EtH always on the phone to him... i don't think he has been you know. How would anyone know? It's not like EtH is going to openly admit it!

We might not get him but this was always going to the wire.

Barca will threaten and harass him but they will have to come to a Euro settlement for him to leave.....

and he still might stay which would be disappointing for ETH but hilarious to see how Barca spin it...

Kessie and Dembele to United

I think more clubs will join the bidding process if he finally decided to quit Barca. PSG,Juventus, chelsea and obviously united.

It will not end only united or chelsea. That's the idea of barcelona too. If big teams come in for him they will milk more money from them.

That's incredibly optimistic. Even Mitten has said he's been told her wants Chelsea. Lampard was told by somebody at United, probably Fergie (they had been filming together apparently), that he wants Chelsea. I'm sure there's lots more. These people don't just make stuff up.

Except it will because no one else wants to pay what United have already agreed to pay. At 50m it's a different story.

How do you know we're interested? Or have agreed a fee? Same rule applies.
