So, for awhile now everyone has been focusing on the owed deferred wages. But the fact is, Barca not only want him to disavow most of the deferred money owed, they also (reportedly) want him to take an additional 50 % salary cut. The man would be baking 30% less than John Stones does and less than Marcus Rashford. He would t just be giving up 17 million. If he accepted their terms he would be giving up closer to 70 million just on this contract.
What makes it worse is that some peoe seem exempt from this “new philosophy” on spending, including new signing Lewa, who would make almost twice what Frenkie does on these terms.
Barca has painted themselves into a corner with their tactics though. Using emotional manipulation of the fan base to borderline endanger Frenkie is a hard step to recover, whether you publicly admonish it or not.
And they can’t capitulate in their demands, otherwise it won’t work the next 10 times they try to do it. And they WILL try this again.
Now, this is where I think United have a chance: Frenkie is a 25 year old. If that meeting tomorrow ends with Barca forcing him to leave it’s gonna leave an emotional mark. He doesn’t seem like someone who has accepted the reality of the situation up to now. He has had Xavi and everyone else telling him how much they still love and need him. But tomorrow they are going to tell him “either take the wages B Silva makes (because he makes around what they want him to cut to) or leave, like now”
Something like that could make him want to be around someone he knows he can trust, maybe more than playing in some CL games.
