If ETH tells him to focus on signing FDJ - what should he say ? No - sign someone else - how is that for backing your manager ?
And there's still weeks left in the window to bring in alternatives. It's not like we're at deadline day already. There's plenty of time to go after other players.

But is there plenty of time to get in quality alternatives if say we leave it with a week left or few days left?

Just hypothetically, if we were to sign Rabiot and SMS instead of just De Jong, I'm not convinced we'd be worse off for more or less the same money

How is any of this on Murtaugh ? He did his job and persuaded the club to sell - it was ETH who couldnt persuade FDJ to join us - and wasted the entire summer rather than signing someone else.

How do you know that?

The amount of money owed by Barcelona to FDJ is the key.

It's a simple Occham's razer.
The most likely scenario is - he want's his well deserved 17 million. Barcelona want him off the paycheck, or to reduce his salary.

It's fecking simple. Couldn't be more simpler that that.

He either obliges to their demand and lowers the salary. Or he leaves. And when he leaves, he still want's his money they owe him.
That's it.

It was obvious from very early on that we were being strung along, everyone involved has been taken for a ride and compromised the entire transfer window. It’s just gross incompetence.

I’ve no doubt we’ll go and waste the money put aside on random signings in same way we did when Sancho transfer fell through.

I don't think he did. There is still time left in the transfer window. We didn't sign other players during the time we could sign FDJ because if we did, and FDJ became available, we would not have the funds to sign FDJ as we'd have already signed another player for that position. They are now looking at other players and there is still plenty of time.

Now, some of the other signings that are being considered are very concerning to me, sure. But the way they went about FDJ and not signing a replacement until they are sure FDJ won't join us is nothing to scoff at, it's smart business.
The season has started. We most certainly did put all our eggs in one basket. If we didn't, our midfield replacements would be training with the team already. Absolute piss poor planning to push and push and go into the seasons start on the small minute chance he would come.

Doesn't look like it's the case though, is it? Every single report (and we had plenty of them) saying FdJ doesn't want to leave Barca, doesn't want to join United or prefers joining Chelsea instead of us, is getting dismissed immediately as not reliable by some here. Our entire hopes for the transfer lies on "we would not be in it if we didn't have indications of him willing to come here". But I think people put way too much faith in our club with this one. It was fun while it lasted but now it became boring with people simply trolling because nobody can actually believe we are getting him.
And all them reports are pure opinion based. The fact that de Jong or his camp haven't said anything aside from "I want to stay" is telling. The stories we have about him preferring Chelsea are ones that usually behin "It is believed that" or "Indications are" or even "He has told his team mates", stories that are opinions or can't be verified. He's told his team mates? Was that over heard by someone, who then told someone else, who then told a reporter? It's just ridiculous. But again, negativity rules. Can't be positive or rational in here.

It's not dismissing anything as not being reliable, it's seeing it for what it is in the given circumstances - pure opinion and speculation based on what they THINK might happen.

Or he joins Chelsea, and prefers to work with Thomas Tuchel rather than ETH.

We’re slowly moving on. Prepare for a spectacular scattergun approach of new flops that will need shifting next year.

Nothing has changed at all since Ornstein's reporting the other day, btw. United and Chelsea still want him, Barca probably still want rid of him, but Frenkie himself is digging in.

He should say lets do this but until X time, because we need to plan our limited window for other targets and prepare a squad for the season.

Do you think Overmars and VDS bent over a desk for Ten Hag? No. It was a joint consultation where consessions were made.

Within a week of Chelsea showing interest, he is going to sign for them.

What on earth was De Jong telling Ten Hag and what on earth was Ten Hag hearing that meant we spent 2 1/2+ months chasing for this guy and our fallback being Rabiot?

I can't fathom the levels of incompetency and stupidity.
He is? I must have missed that?

That would be a fair point if we had a genuine plan B

We chased a player for 3 months without a backup plan and worse if Rabiot is supposed to be the backup plan we're more clueless than i thought.

Chelsea, City, Arsenal, Spurs have all added a midfielder and striker this summer.

We're desperate for both and have added feck all.

Could you name at least 2?

Didn't think so.

So you would rather we chase this imaginary transfer then as he is not coming, not this season or next season.

We have to move and find the next best attainable alternative unless you enjoy mcfred partnership for another season or feeding off other clubs scraps in the bargain bin?

Or he joins Chelsea, and prefers to work with Thomas Tuchel rather than ETH.

I think it will be a mistake preferring to work under Tuchel. But hey he made a good career move moving to Barca. So he’s use to making good decisions.

Most the noise has been he doesn't want to leave Barca.

IF he is forced out, then he wants CL football. It's been quite clear for a while he isn't really fancying us. The club tried, clearly the agents were giving us the thumbs up to push (probably as it suited them to generate interest elsewhere)

i'm not sure what else we could have done. We tried, we failed. We tried we failed for Nunez also.

The club has to accept we are now a YO-YO CL club, we aren't shopping for the top dogs anymore.

But the very few stories of him willing to join us are exactly the same... And most of them are based on "we would not be in it if he doesn't want to come". People can be positive but most of the time it's borderline delusion with people cherry picking what to believe and what is "true" and what is not.

It is still on Murtough as he is the one negotiating the deal not just with the club but with the player as well. If he is solely relying on something he’s been told by ETH then he is inadequate at his job. He would be the best person to gauge the likelihood of a transfer and also have a backup plan in place. He’s the one who should dictate the deadlines and be affirmative in all our actions. He can’t just sit there and say oh ETH told me this n that.

This nonsense about its FDJ or nothing is clearly not true. We are trying to sign Rabiot and being linked with SMS. So yes alternatives were always on the cards. But we seem to be turning to them after 3 months of stalemate.

Annoying how Chelsea can afford to throw money around on players they don't even need. Must be nice

SMS and Rabiot has to be plan B. I don't think it's a coincidence that we've stepped up interest in both players in the last few days. Jason Burt wrote on Monday that de Jong was looking unlikely so it looks like we've pivoted.

Nothing has changed at all since Ornstein's reporting the other day, btw. United and Chelsea still want him, Barca probably still want rid of him, but Frenkie himself is digging in.

Take care of him. Top signing for Chelsea adding even more quality to an already good midfield.

The season started before Rooney and Berbatov signed for us on deadline days, too. Should we have just bought a random cheaper striker on those occasions, or stuck with it for our man?

The season started earlier this season, too, because of the World Cup. We have a new manager, who had to review our players trying his tactics for the first time.

Fans can panic all they want, but I'd prefer we give ourselves the best chances to sign the best players possible in the transfer window. If that means one or two of them miss pre-season or even the early games, so be it. The squad should be able to handle one or two games without the best possible team, and if they can't, we quite frankly don't deserve to win them and that's that.

Woodward would have made this happen :wenger: just saying
No he wouldn’t. Woodward would not have targetted a player the manager wanted. Woodward would have signed the player he wanted and then beat his chest about it.

But Rabiot is so far down on the list of available midfielders moving this summer, I mean he's been on the transfer list for 15m quid since early June. Going from FdJ to Rabiot is such a shocking drop in quality it can't be true.

Exactly my point. No one knows whats going on. Chelsea guys are going with the "he definitely wants Chelsea" but thats based on the fact that Chelsea are in London (more appealing area) and has CL football. Theres no proof that he absolutely wants CL football, and if Ornstein is to be believed, then the fact he has no preference tells me that it's not a huge deciding factor.

Meanwhile all we get from United is "We're confident that he wants to come" thats it. Nothing more, nothing less. Do they know more than us? Yes. Do they know if he does or doesn't want to come? Yes. Do we? No. So if United are still hanging round, there is something keeping them there.

Cherry picking what they want to believe you say? You mean like the people who are beliving every single word about him wanting Chelsea even though there is absolutely no proof that he does? Goes both ways

I think it will be a mistake preferring to work under Tuchel. But hey he made a good career move moving to Barca. So he’s use to making good decisions.
I actually fell this way too. I don’t know how he fits in a Tuchel side. Is he going to carry the ball forward in a back 5? This Chelsea side isn’t set up for that, he’ll have the same problems as Xavi has with him trying to in-still discipline so he to play deeper.
It’s a big move for him, flatter to deceive there as well and it’s looking like an underwhelming career

Rabiot and SMS is the hope

Yeh let's ignore we were one of the biggest most attractive club at the time with CL football

I didn't read your point after the first sentence because it's slaps with in denial of where we at right now with an inept board. Forget the past

Must be nice being a fan of an actual football club. We haven’t been able to say that for nearly 10 years now. Or ever since the Glazers took over really.
