Am I wrong though? If I was a United player who could get interest from big clubs like Sancho or Bruno or Rashford I would strongly consider handing in a transfer request just based on our interest in fecking Rabiot and Arnautović as the supposed solutions to long standing issues. Its the summer transfer window and we've known about these problems in our squad for years. How the feck are we at this point. Why would Frenkie de Jong come to the disaster that is United right now?

I'm fully confident that Ten Hag is a top manager. But honestly I'm more worried that he'll just walk out due to the incompetence at this point.

£60m Sterling, £72m Cucerella, £40m Koulibaly. Add that to the £200m above and it’s close to £400m.

Well sure it adds up to £400M if you keep pulling the numbers out of your arse.

But even so, it has to be stated that clubs generally don’t give a feck about the transfer fee spending during a single window but rather the long term total costs (amortisation+salary) of the deals.

Compared to last season Chelsea have already made very significant savings in these costs even without any notable sales so far. Getting all of Saul Niguez, Danny Drinkwater (yes he was still at the club), Antonio Rüdiger and Andreas Christensen off the books permanently means a saving of around £50M a year on the club’s books. Add to that Lukaku's salary being paid by Inter for the loan period and the £8M loan fee it's another £25M saved compared to last season. Werner is going back to Leipzig for just enough of a fee to cover his remaining amortisation value and his big salary will be gone so add another £20-25M a year in yearly savings on the books. Alonso will be another goner.

Funny how all these figures start adding up so that signing a few new players all of a sudden isn't going to be such a huge deal as it may seem at first glance. Remember that all these new signings will be amortised on the books for the contract duration as well so if anything, with all the savings mentioned above and the additions of Sterling, Koulibaly, Cucurella, Chukwuemeka, Slonina I'm pretty sure the club's total wages+amortisation costs have actually gone down from last year, although Lukaku is still an ongoing issue that may bite us again next year but for now he's more or less out of the calculations save from the difference in transfer fee amortisation - loan fee.

They've spent over £150m on Sterling, Koulibaly, Cucurella, Chukwuemeka and Slonina already, haven't sold anyone for any significant amount of money and if reports are correct they want to spend £180m on FDJ and Fofana. That's more than £330m just there. Not unthinkable that a striker would push the total close to - or even over - £400m at all.
They're not about to spend £95m on FDJ and they've sold Werner for £30m. The numbers being thrown around are ridiculous as they're not even on course to beat their own window record or the amounts we've spent in previous windows. Unless the owners are going to front load the investment and then tighten the purse strings?

I think a lot of the reaction is based on yesterday, which undoubtedly was shocking. De Jong could still be lured here and could have a massive club built around his strengths and be a focal point to the whole project that Ten Hag is wanting to achieve.

Rabiot and Arnautovic clearly aren't our top targets, they're obvious stop gaps, but if it improves us for a year and helps Ten Hag and his styles bed in, then is it such a bad thing?

This season was always going to be very bumpy, we've just got to ride it out and see where we get to.

How anyone can justifiably still come up with excuses for that utter shit show of a club is beyond me, at least we arent as shit as them!

and a forward after that
I agree. A cheap one, though. Not one that would prevent us from pursuing a midfielder apparently if Ornstein is to be believed.

Maybe, maybe Gallagher will be on loan again

Didn’t say we aren’t interested in a midfielder, just that it’s not the top priority.

Think it’s pretty obvious that our club doesn’t want to get burned like they have twice already with Raphinha and Koundé. No more bidding for a player and agreeing with the club first before agreeing anything with the player.
Aargh, that makes more sense yeah. Didn’t get the full Tuchel presser. Though spending another £80m+ on Fofana would take your spending to over £200m for the summer right?

Some very positive lines in the Mitten piece today

I think it would be bigger news if we weren't all tired of it

To paraphrase - United will ramp up efforts to get the deal done, they wouldn't be doing the deal if they weren't encouraged to do it, Barca won't start him next week, United's interest is not wavering.

Never seen anything like it. I don't fault United for sticking through it and try to get the player anyway, but these latest developments paint such a messy picture that we might want to look elsewhere. We can't catch a break at the moment.

Such a shame Gravenberch had already agreed to join Bayern when we got ETH.

So which is which? Because a better reporter is saying he's not made a decision and doesn't have a preference yet when Mitten is saying he'd prefer Chelsea
Mitten also said that Utd are still being assured a deal can be done

He's reporting exactly what he's been told by multiple sources. Two sources have said he would prefer a move to Chelsea / London. Others have said he isn't closed to a united move if that's how it pans out. He says Chelsea have not made an offer yet and that relations between the two clubs are not good. There is nothing contradictory here. Andy has spoken to people who are high up at Barcelona, he has those kinds of contacts. If you don't want to believe what he is reporting then that's fine and is your right. I know though that he won't have written what he wrote without having checked his facts with multiple sources. Of course maybe they don't tell him 100% truth, but that's true for every journalist.

Tuchel also gave VERY interesting and more detailed/telling comments later on post match: the ones where he basically poked fun at himself for how we play “keep people out, move the ball up slow, Jorgihno penalty”

He specifically said we HAD to play that way due to personnel. That our best line up had 3 older players at the core and the double sixes played close to them due to recovery issues. The ONE time Koulibaliy went forward Silva was almost caught out and came close to giving up a penalty. Jorgihno is slow, Kante is old and getting slower, Azpi is slow, Silva is great, but old and slow.

He has tried to play a formation with more going forward and we simply fail. Two players could fix that: Fofana and De Jong. Played alongside Kante and recovery pace is no longer an issue and he can create going forward in a way Jorgihno simply isn’t capable.

Silvas legs almost gave out by the end of just that first game. Play Fofana and Koulibaliy with De Jong, Jorgihno/Kovacic, and Mount as a connecting mid instead of a winger that had to drift back just to try and link up …. And we could be a completely different team.

I have seen ALL the players we have up front, including Havertz, put goals last people steadily in different situations. What has to change is how isolated our attack is.

There are NO attackers out there that can simply receive the ball by themselves and make offense while the team huddled back.

This would be their best option. Im still skeptical of it happening. But not because Tuchel doesn’t see the issue. He just doesn’t want to rip our core publicly on something that is a long shot.

My guess is, despite all the reports suggesting he'd prefer Chelsea , he still much prefers staying at Barca, so unless Chelsea get an indication from De Jong that he would gladly leave Barca and sign for us, Chelsea won't make an official move.
Thats exactly it. Its also exactly what Ornstein and the like are reporting.

Chelsea know exactly what we're prepared to pay for the overall deal, but wont formalise it until FDJ gives an indication he is willing to leave. Otherwise we'll be in the same boat as previous deals, agree everything and it just doesnt go anywhere

They're a holy show, but they'll be in next seasons Champions League.

Don‘t think so. Conor is a more advanced midfielder who should rotate with Mount rather than competing with Kova/Jorgi/Kante. He’s got a role here for sure.

Yeah. But reports suggest we will go much higher. I’m dubious but can imagine it.

Well, maybe the 8 of them that are allowed to be registered :)

The ridiculous thing is, they could spend 3 years competing with academy products and a couple of elder statesmen while they rebuilt themselves financially. They might not win anything but I'd still fancy them to qualify top 4 and they'd be the darlings of world football while they did it.

I was also VERY aware that the timing of people coming out and definitively saying “Chelsea” coincided directly with us apparently reaching agreement on Alonso. That could play a factor, or people mistakenly “think” it’s a factor, or Barca have told people it’s a factor and it isn’t, or it’s completely unrelated. Very coincidental though.

Yeah at least it’s a good sign from the owners as well.

Ornstein says that he has no preferece on where he wants to go.

So who do we believe?

Hard to say, but Mitten has very good sources at the club and I don’t think he would report anything unless it was completely accurate. I’m afraid the end days are approaching for this move.

I made this argument like 900 pages ago. I think Barca misunderstand their brand and why people like them. I agree completely. The older Galacticos (Like Lewa) seem especially odd.

I always feared the De Jong was just the same over again. Never coming. But guess we now need to wait for the Barca registration deadline on 13 August before pulling the plug.
But now I fear we will not get any new real players in the will be anything but panic buys at way to high salaries.t
Do not see any top players in any of the players we are now linked with.

Well Werner for 30m has brought some back in. Plus wasn't there talk that apart from the owners using their own funds and/or the clubs finances for purchases, they also had access to a 300m revolving credit which was apparently solely for the squad.

Can’t see Chelsea’s interest being all that credible after Tuchels comments. I wonder if the manager not really on board is harming their bid

Tuchel said:

"Maybe not midfielders as a first option but we are open for everything."

They are open to signing a midfielder.

Desperate to pin everything on Bartomeu.

That screams towing the company line. Open for everything is the perfect phrase for how they’re conducting themselves this summer

Lewa is a Real Madrid signing. They've completely turned their back on everything that made them, and bankrupted themselves to do it.

If they weren't only the second worst run club in football, I'd die of laughter.

It screams "I'm not going to give our transfer plans away to you and am going to be as non-commital" as possible. It's the same "neither confirm nor deny" response managers usually give, and he was grinning whilst he said it.

Incredible. Spanish radio claim Barcelona jointly set-up a holdings company to which it paid €150m of its own money to buy its own assets (to inflate value of sale). La Liga rejected it as not "new" money. Barça must now pay €37.5m tax on this payment. (per Collin Millar).
This thread is picking up!

Well that's it then he's off to Chelsea. Hurry up and fecking go somewhere or stay in the sun.
