No. Di Maria issue was according to him with the way LVG treated him. So unless LVG and ETH are the same person I don't see the reason to expect the same outcome, that's also ignoring that De Jong isn't Di Maria.
Don't know why you took it in the literal sense and had to specify that EtH is not LvG and Frenkie is not Di Maria.
The analogy is that a player would hate the guts of the place he is supposed to play in , and looks for the first way out. The difference is that with Di Maria it was developed after the transfer happened. Of course all of this is preconditioned on the statement that Frenkie really wants to stay in Barcelona.

Short term gain? Barcelona smashed us since 2008. Ripped us the shreds every time we played them in recent history.

They will continue doing this and you will continue crowing about money while we win zero titles. Complaining about value in the market because that is how you have been programmed now by this club.

Barcelona have a higher profile than our club because they are basically always better than us season in season out. Barcelona will be around in 20 years and yes they will have won more than United in that time. Period.

Kitchen sink argument

That's even worse, since when De Jong hates Manchester?

I think people are seriously not realising what £17,000,000 actually is. They think it's a FIFA game.
It’s becoming pretty clear it’s not just about the 17m owed to him. Utd would happily pay that 17m right now if that was the only obstacle. We are showing we would pay it by the desperate bids we are putting in for other players right now.

I dont know why people still have any hopes for De Jong?

Barca have treated him real bad, threaten to sue him and he still would prefer staying there than coming to United. Regardless of what anyone says, we have fecked this up real bad.

I hear things like we wouldnt be in for him this long if he didnt want to come. This is the Manchester United board we are talking about, he probably told them no in May and they are still trying.

Just shows the pathetic nature of how the club is run, to a point now after the first loss, panic set in.

They have utterly destroyed our club though in modern history so throwing shade at them now when even at their lowest have a better team than we do. “A well run club” is kinda depressing.

If true…

He also mentioned this

While Barcelona want to sell De Jong, he has so far shown no indication that he wants to leave. He knows of interest from Manchester United and Chelsea and has told at least two people that he would prefer Chelsea and London over United and Manchester, yet while Chelsea have shown interest in the player, they have made no offer for him.

If Chelsea go for him, we wont get him

This thread should be closed. We are living in Cuckoo land if we think De Jong is going to come here. If he signs, I will let the forum choose a new user name for me.

But as I said before, Ornstein says that de Jong hasn't got a preference if he decides to leave.

Who do we believe? Both are credible

We can move on now.

Thankfully we didn't publicise that we had agreed a 75m fee that is now suddenly available to spend again, so no other clubs will hold us to ransom now that we're desperate.

Phew.

Has the transfer been concluded one way or another? No? Well no closure then

So Murtough and ETH are creepy transfer stalkers!!

I cant see any scenario where Barca can take action against fdJ. He simply gets told what he will earn, what his bonuses are and clauses, and signs, if he agrees. All the intricacies are down to lawyers, agent and board, they're the ones who'd be fecked if there is some illegal part to it. surely?

He'll just refuse to go back to his old deal.
In America the lawyers and agents on the side of the players, and the league, would have a feduciary responsibility not to cave to Barcelona

The truly odd thing is the “wage deferment” was the only thing making them eligible play last year wasn’t it? Are they essentially arguing “they” did something illegal , and therefore shouldn’t be victims of themselves?

I'm all for signing this lad but United should have been much more pro-active in managing the situation. If what Ornstein is saying is correct that 24 hours after agreeing a fee with United, Barca then said to FdJ that his current contract had some elements of "criminality" then United should have gone back to Barca and played hell.

We negotiated a price based on his current contractual situation, but Barca apparently already knew there was something iffy about that contract. We should have threatened to pull out or renegotiate the contract at that point, and take that info to FIFA for an investigation. The fact that we seemingly just re-negotiated to pay more upfront while all this is ongoing is just baffling.

if someone enters negotiations in bad faith like Barca clearly did...you don't offer them more. you walk away or leverage their potential embarrassment to your advantage!

I honestly wouldn't trust the United board to run a fecking milk float.

I’m genuinely terrified of the thought of us signing Rabiot instead of Frenkie. Please ban me if it happens

Yeah Rabiot with De Jong is something I can live with much like Arnautovic with Sesko. However if it's instead of then yeah hard not to feel very underwhelmed.

Its takes a month playing chicken when your club threaten you with legal action and refuse to pay up 17m they owe you…
But reports are indicating that both Chelsea and United would pay a large part of the 17m, Barca also reportedly offered him half.

These things generally are negotiated pretty quickly as all parties know that eventually they will have to come back to the table to negotiate.

On a purely footballing side, I agree. But I can't get on board with Arnautovic with his history

Surely we would have walked away 2 months back if it was a firm no, mind you this is Utd we are talking about so maybe we are that daft.

They will happily sell their club to a billionaire if it goes to pot anyways or a country. Who wouldn’t want to buy Barcelona? They’d have a queue round the block like it or not of high profile people.

All they have to do is sort their wage budget out anyways and they are fine because they are Barcelona.
This is incredibly naive. Your whole argument seems to hinge on 'they'll be fine because they're Barcelona', which isn't even an argument. I'm not complaining about value in the market, I'm complaining about a club spending well beyond their means for instant gratification ahead of long term sustainability. Also, finishing a sentence with 'Period' doesn't make your argument any more compelling.

“Reports”

I totally understand where that point comes from. However; if a player wanted to come, United want him, Barca want to sell, all 3 can come together for a resolution.

The fact that there seems to be 0 attempt for a resolution tells me that we are being played. The club has been played before by Barca (Fabregas) and will continue to be played by other clubs.

No other club would wait around for a player like we have, regardless of the quality. Barca completed a squad rebuild with no money and we are here waiting around.

Its like telling someone I like you but they said no and you said to them, if you change your mind, you know where I am and we are sat in the same place waiting for that person to come to you.

I am sitting here in disbelief this morning, back in his Ajax days the board would have to put there foot down and say no to Ten Hag signings as they would not fit into the club ethos. our board need to do this now with Arnautovic, Rabiot even next to De Jong would be a poor signing, i am just shocked that we have learnt nothing from the last few seasons.

As for De Jong, i am not sure it can even get more convoluted, i want to remain positive but this morning has actually been worse than yesterday.
