I think signing Phillips is key, as he can play as the deepest midfielder, or in a more progressive role. Rodri doesn't miss many games, and Gundogan is a top player. They also know that De Bruyne or Foden can play deeper if necessary. Perhaps Cancelo could even play there? They have plenty of depth, plus youngsters like Palmer that seem really promising.
If they had any interest in De Jong, I think they'd have made it known to barca long before now, and we know how they like to leak everything and anything to the press to suit their narrative.

It's obvious, regardless from what they say in interviews, they don't want him there. He's lost his favoured spot and is now a backup CB... if he decides to stay and agree a pay cut, then i guess his love the club is that strong that he doesn't care about being used and abused by them. Personally though, i think in a couple of weeks it'll be over and he'll be leaving. Barca aren't done buying yet and they need to get players out asap

I see the inference is that Barca have offered €7m of his deferred wages but that 'report' is so light on detail that even if it is true, it could mean anything. Is that €7m as a severance payment, or is that potentially what they are trying to renegotiate his salary down to for next season? I don't think it is much of an update - just words for that guy's column unfortunately.

Something definitely has to give soon. They've signed so many players and i don't think any have actually gone yet. Seems to me like the public interviews with Laporta are designed to put the pressure on de Jong to make a decision one way or another. Seem to me that Barca are getting a little impatient with him

This transfer is definitely tied to the Bernardo Silva one. Could be why Laporta is talking shit about wanting him to stay, if we can't get Bernardo I think the club make efforts to calm the situation, work out a deal and Frenkie stays.
