And that’s not including those loyalty bonuses, we actually have no idea how much his agent is asking for here, the deal is worth around another 80 million so he could easily be demanding 17m in “owed” wages and one of the big loyalty bonuses on top (3 mil for next season, 10 mil the following season).
There’s every chance he’s saying he wants between 20-25m to even consider a move, so strong is there position here.

Currently FdJ's strongest advantage is in the fact that he can dangle the threat of Barcelona not being able to register their new players and that they are going to owe him close to €80M over the next few seasons. The second he agrees to anything other than a suitable pay-out before considering a transfer, he loses that advantage. The closer to deadline day this transfer saga comes, the more likely Barcelona are to finally relent and pay up - it would be a disaster for Laporta's relection chances if he weren't able to find a way to register Lewandowski and Raphinha as well as balance the books out a little. This is why the media campaign against him is so massive.
As long as we are willing to stand by and wait, FdJ can drag this on until deadline day, and at that point Barcelona will be desperate to pay him - because Laporta will be desperate for a win.

You’re not the only one to say this but he is protected by his contract. The default position is that Barca have to honour the contract. If they want him to leave they have to pay him off to a level he will accept. He has the upper hand in any negotiations and will be very well off either way.
No way this can be unlocked until very close to deadline day. Poker game analogy is very apt. United just needs to sit there and stare straight ahead. Next person to speak loses. Barca are short stacked.
United appear desperate in their bid to land De Jong. He doesn't seem interested in joining the club, and yet United keep waiting for him. How was De Jong ever going to contribute anything positive in the dressing room? The teammates will have to play with a man who doesn't want to be there. At the same time, time flies, and the season will start shortly. I wonder if there are other players who could be interesting and interested?

This is so dramatic. He's not being forced against his will. He could lower his wage demands and join any Spanish team (Or you know, his current club). If he doesn't, it's because he wants to go elsewhere.
And how do you know that someone that wanted to join the club does not regret it 5-6 months later? How will they play with him then? This quite a weird narrative.
Both terms imply that he is not against playing for United, just not actively pursuing it (like Ronaldo for example). We know from the start that he'd rather have stayed it Barcelona but with every passing day it seems that matters less and less. They are treating him poorly and trying to con him out of his earned wages. Also, they are trying to make him a villain for not agreeing to their crazy wage demands like it is his fault they were offered.
Still doesn't mean he will leave, hope he does, but if Barca do not pay up he isn't going anywhere
Exactly he is open to it but it is very clear he wants to stay, if that is 100% not going to happen then I’m sure Frenkie is also open to joining other clubs, not just ours.

There might be some teams having injuries to key players or a bad season and doing some panic buys.
Playing a good world cup will most likely increase his value and raise the interest of more clubs. Most likely United will still be interested anyway, if you haven't signed an alternative.
He might have options. Not sure he will have many offering the wages and prospects of United. Maybe he thinks ETH is shit and hates him but there is reasonable doubt about that.

Agree, but him staying seems to pose a whole other set of issues for Barcelona, so something's gotta give. They will probably settle on something in the region of 9-12 million.

It makes me smile when you come back into this thread after a while (doing the annual Center Parcs with wife and kids) to find a gazillion page updates, but nothing more added than pictures of houses and arguments around ‘monies’. Some of you are true muppet warriors.
Our midfield is in such ridiculous state that it need not one but two CM. So I'd say lets get someone on the cheap (Fabian Ruiz?) now. That would remove some urgency in signing the player which in turn would probably push De Jong and Barca around the table. If we are still able to sign De Jong then fine. We'll get rid of VDB and we'll be fine. If not, well, at least, we'll have a half decent CM to rely upon.
We are probably in kind of a pickle because of Ronaldo wanting to leave. If he does, we will have to sign someone, which is forcing our hand a season too early.

from what ETH has said, what gives you the impression he'd want to do that? Not baiting you or anything, just interested in the thought as the overwhelming impression I have of ETH is yes...buy more players, but they have to be distinctly ETH type players. he does not seem very interested in "just buy anyone so I have more options" type of guy.
