If Frenkie was on the phone with ETH, he'd have been polite and told him how flattered he is and how he can indeed imagine moving. And see how it goes with Barca and let his agent sort out the rest.

If you can see how hollow such a commitment would be, I'm sure ETH can too.

when he can’t imagine it for a second? bollocks.

He’d say “thanks boss, I’m flattered but I’m not leaving Barcelona right now”.
Nope. You don't get it. He wouldn't make definitive career decisions in a phone call like that. And you accuse me of being daft..

He can use the old trick "leak" to the press to relay the true message if he is thinking of leaving and joining us. But all signs showing the opposite is true.
Judging by the way ETH values FDJ, and also how FDJ agreed a wage deferment, have you considered this isn't happening because FDJ isn't that type of person? Maybe a decent bloke? God forbid, football could do with some of those.

I don't know ETH, but he really, REALLY doesn't appear to be one to waste time. This wouldn't still be going if it wasn't likely to happen.

feck off with the haiku's
Please
I don't know what they are or how to do them
They annoy me.
Just go ahead, you piece of shit.

Usually yes, but not in this case. If his preference is to stay at Barca as a starting midfielder, as everyone thinks is the case, the last thing you want is a suitor offering good money for skint Barca to part with you.

Believe what you wanna believe i say as there is so much sh1t being spouted about FDJ.

He must have indicated to us he was keen, we wouldnt risk the embarassment of hanging around like a bad smell if he genuinely not interested.

That said Ronnie wanting to leave isnt great and you can see good times will return to Barca too so could understand doubts.

We should boss the situation though, move on sign Neves and Sangare and leave the BS behind. Time waits for no man...time for the club to be decisive for once.
Even the most ardent of FDJ fans will not moan if we walk now, its a circus of shite......its embarassing.

Eriksen did not get the 21 kit number, as he usually has had that number.

Lisandro Martinez usually wears that number too. Let’s see what number he gets.

Frenkie also wears nr 21.

Hasn't been backed up by Ornstein or Whitwell yet. If those + Ducker/Stone start saying the same, then i'd agree. Until then. It's on AF.
If Ornstein and the sorts back it all up then there's obviously something to this. Until then it's basically old news with a tiny bit of new info, new info which goes against pretty much every bit of info we've had for the past few months.

Romero says ten Hag and de Jong talk often. If they didn't have a good relationship why would they talk often? If he didn't want to come, why bother talking at all?

Have shirt numbers been confirmed?

If the athletic are saying it’s off, It is most likely off.
Its not written by English sources like Laurie. Ducker and Laurie have been saying different and they havent mentioned anything.

This deal could very well be dead but this article is hardly anything different that Spanish journalist have not printed in last 2 months

Going by this thread you will know this is off when De Jong files for a restraining order against Ten Hag

So until then...it's on like donkey kong!!!....?

Good job they haven't said anything of the sort then.

Athletic: Frenkie sees United as less attractive than Barca
TheCaf: OMG the Athletic say it is off, the sky is falling
He ain’t coming, ye muppets are feeding off scraps. There isn’t a single reliable source being optimistic about this, so why are you?

Guys before you go all soppy brained again let’s engage those brains and think logically. Do you honestly think ETH would have them there hanging in without receiving some sort of assurances/encouragement? All this other shot is being pumped out by Barca’s side. They are trying to make him say that he wants to leave so he’d forgo any bonuses etc plus they are trying to drag out any potential other buyers
I’m sure that if FDJ had indicated that he did not want to come, that the club would’ve moved on.

however, I can also believe that FDJ is not really excited about a move to United, and is content with holding out to make sure he gets his money, and to see if a better option comes along.

Also, and I think most importantly, I don’t think it’s possible for Frenkie or Ten Hag to know that we will get the deal over the line, as Barcelona absolutely cannot be trusted. To me, this is a situation where Murtough should step in and say, “we cannot let Barcelona play games with us. Let’s spend some of that money on another midfielder, or at another position (Antony, perhaps) and go back to FDJ or another elite midfielder later.

The club has so many holes that need to be plugged, and disrupting the preseason waiting on a player who might not come is not a healthy way to start the season.

Eriksen only wore 21 at Brentford.

He's 10 for Denmark
23 for Spurs
24 for Inter.

If Martinez doesn't get 21, then we can get excited.

Bullshit again. By all accounts that’s exactly what Timber did. It’s also apparently what Ronaldo did when he spoke to Ferguson.

Now there’s no reason whatsoever for a player to string along a manager he respects if he has no intention of joining him as per some of these reports, it’s absolute codswallop. And that’s just assuming they spoke once in at Ten Hag hasn’t tried calling him again which is once again utter drivel.
That have likely been a few phone calls as things have moved on such as the deal being agreed, such as united then agreeing to pay extra, such as Xavi saying he’s a centre back. People talk, they don’t just have one conversation two months ago where one person is very noncommittal and says I could imagine it, and then never talk again despite pushing for the transfer.*

*or maybe that’s how our new manager works, and in that case he’s an absolute moron. He doesn’t appear to be a moron

We absolutely love briefing the press man.

We’d 100% hear the Simon Stone’s of the World report that United have moved on.

It was just one week ago right that ETH told the World, “we are ready when that player is made available”. What has changed? Nada.

I'm not convinced because everybody would know we've just wasted months chasing a fantasy and the new guys would look daft.

Regarding the last part, nothing has changed. You're right. And it looks like it never will.

Regardless of whether de Jong wants to join United or not and the state of the Barca internal politics, this is what you would call a lot of baggage and for that very reason alone, United should have just walked away weeks ago.

I don't even think he's worth the hassle.

Until Frenkie goes on TV and stares down the camera with those cold dead eyes and says "stop harassing me you creepy bald prick, I'm not interested in playing in the Europa, in the rain" this is so on baby!

He ain’t coming, ye muppets are feeding off scraps. There isn’t a single reliable source being optimistic about this, so why are you?

Simple examination of facts

1. Frenkie won't agree to a pay cut
2. Barca literally have said multiple times he has to go if he won't take a pay cut
3. Utd are the only club in for him

Sure it is a complicated deal and Barca and Frenkie are locked in a bizarre stand off over the wages he deferred but the least likely outcome has always been that he will stay in Barca at his current wage. The reduction in salary they want him to agree to would amount to 50M euros including what he has already deferred, I am pretty sure his love for Barca is not going to amount to him writing off that much money.

I can't imagine he's actually happy to stay at Barcelona when they are trying to weasel out of paying him money he is already owed.

Can you imagine wanting to stay in a job where the company just refuses to pay you fully and then tries to get rid of you to get out of backdating what they owe you?

Doesn't mean he wants to join united obviously but he's not exactly going to be thrilled with his treatment, and actually sitting it out until they agree to compensate him plays very much into his hands. Worst case scenario he ends up out of contract because they can't pay him, can then legally claim the money anyway, and can sign for whoever he wants.

Other alternatives are they keep him and have to pay him or he agrees to a massive pay cut and to waive what hes already owed. The first puts barcelona in a massive mess and the second just doesn't seem plausible as he'd be letting them take him for a complete muppet

No, but we'd brief that we'd ended interest or that we'd walked away.

I bet we don't. Because Mr "I'm going to change the way United are perceived as pushovers" Murtough will look a right idiot. Along with Arnold. We've doubled down on him changing his mind and joining but it's not happened, how bad will it look on us once everyone realises this is over?

"Bullshit, codswallop, utter drivel", considering we're dealing with speculative things your use of words is a bit over the top, besides I gave a perfectly rational argument why it's not in the interest of a player to tell potential suitors off without necessity.

The no intention thing is of course relative in professional football, I'm sure De Jong woudn't ponder committing suicide if he had to move from Barca to Man United. It doesn't sound like he's dying to join you though, might be a tactical position in the dispute with Barca about deferred wages, it might be a, however modest, however strong, preference to stay, or possibly both.

I think it says more about us. If PSG, Chelsea, Bayern etc were chasing, he'd have forced it through I think. He knows as well as we do that the chances of us getting CL again for next season are again slim.

We can get excited if Eriksen doesn’t get #23, too. #Clevzback

You can't force a player to come. I don't think it'll look overly bad at all. We've been given assurances he'd be open to joining (as per Ducker, Whitwell). So if he changes his mind and stays, so be it.

Your tone shows that you're not a fan of Murtough/Arnold, so you're not going to agree, but I don't think this reflects badly on the club at all. We've agreed a fee with the selling club, if the player wants to stay, then there we go.

Is it very likely that with everything going on and all the delays, they have only spoken once?

If I was Ten Hag, and I was being told random crap by Laporta that directly contradicted what I had already spoken to Frenkie about, I'd give Frenkie a call and hear what's going on.

The fact that Ten Hag still wants us to keep at it and the club is relaxed about the situation doesn't lend itself to suggest the deal is off.

And how does it benefit their image to foolishly keep trying till deadline day and still not get him or an alternative?
Walking away now and getting an alternative lessens anger. Walking away on deadline day empty handed will create bigger vitriol towards Arnold than Ed Woodward ever got
