Frenkie De Jong - Part 3?

Transfermarkt says his recent injury kept him sidelined for 162 days.

He also doesn't want to come here, as he has stated multiple times that he is happy in Barcelona. Plus his girlfriend loves the city and doesn't want to leave.

Let's sign him up already. Signing Frenkie is definitely a brilliant, and not terrible, idea. I see no possible way that this can go horribly wrong.

Regardless of FDJ’s quality and what he may or may not be like post injury, my dislike for ETH and everything in his orbit has progressed so far that I actively do not want us to sign anyone he might want or has been involved with in the past

Also on Ten Hag(and our recruitment team) that once he didnt get De Jong, his next options in midfield were Casemiro, Mount and Ugarte, 3 players who are absolutely nothing like De Jong.
Ten Hag said we were going to develop a De Jong type in house, which we did.

Not the same type though really.
When he first broke through ETH was playing him deeper so it looked like he wanted to develop him into that type of player. However once Casemiro came back ETH pushed Mainoo further forward and seems to want him to be more of an Iniesta instead. Long term who knows how it'll go, but the latter does seem more likely due to Mainoo not really getting on the ball enough at the moment to play that deeper role.

They would suit playing together tbh. Mainoo suits more of an 8 than a 6. He's not a notable passer of the ball.

We really need to give up on de jong its the same script everytime.

I think this move might actually finally be dead tonight. To think what might have been if we’d got him in Eric’s first summer.
Major knee injury in October, rushed back regular for the next 2 years and constantly unfit until Ten Hag is sacked I imagine.

I imagine this is now even more dead-in-the-water than it was before: might be quite some time till we go with a Dutch connection again!

With the emergence of Fermin Lopez and Marc Casado, and Dani Olmo joining them we will see how much he REALLY loves Barcelona.

It doesn’t really matter, he’s on a gigantic contract so short of them kicking him out he’s there to stay. ten Hag getting binned here also closes one of the few gates they had for someone to spend big and pay him big salary.

They’re stuck with him

I don't think he even suits a 3-4-3 to be honest. He's great and going past people but doesn't have a range of passing which is what we're going to need to partner Ugarte.

On the bench I see. Have Barca just never taken to him?

Anyway, this one was a non-starter years ago. He'll probably go to Bayern or Juve or something.

Coming back from a major injury

Mainoo shouldn't be playing in the midfield though. He actually suits the role behind the striker perfectly.

I really don’t understand people wanting Kobbie to be this attacking midfielder rather than use his technical ability and composure as a deep lying playmaker. We’ve been crying out for one for so long and he’s shown he can do that role (see his debut at Everton) but for some reason Erik started pushing him further and further forward.

Not saying he can’t do it further forward, but he has a unique set of natural skills that suit a deeper role, which much fewer players have then the skills required as an AM. He also reads the game well defensively with good interceptions and blocks.

His engine isn’t 10/10 you could say but I think Erik’s system exposed that in all of our midfielders and I think in a system that is implemented properly that won’t be a problem.

This is an odd assessment. It's more than good enough for what's required in that #8 spot in an Amorim system, especially if you're playing two 10s ahead of him (one being Bruno who has fantastic range).

His frequent injury woes should make him a no no for any potential suitors.
