Maybe it's just me, but wouldn't the midfield be too narrow? We don't exactly play rampaging fullbacks either.

If we sign Fred, we will probably transistion to a 433, and in a 433, there's two wide midfielders.
With Pogba wide left and Fred wide right, they would be inverted just like your normal inverted FBs and wingers. It's like a 3 at the back system, with the left footed CB on the right and the right footed CB on the left. What's there not to understand?

what are you trying to say? According to you it seems like our players will all play in the center of the field and will trip all over the place and poor old Lukaku will be stranded alone. oh wait he is an inverted striker too? in which case DDG will be completely entertained!

He'd be quite box to box. Decent passer and tackler, very good on the ball.

Yea, he’s a playmaking CDM who plays box-to-box and can play higher up if need. Essentially is a true midfielder who plays CM but is a CDM with how well he tracks back and sound defensively. Perfect link-up partner for Matic and Pogba and most important thing being he is indeed b2b capable.

And he’s an exceptional tackler.

“ I don’t think people realize how ridiculous 5 tackles per game is. Most DM’s average 2/3 per game and Fred isn’t even a pure dm ”

SSN must be livid, £50m (if true) is City's standard fee. They'll have to really scrape through his bonuses/salary/travel costs to make this into a story.

Expect some vague headline like 'United sign Fred who could cost them up to £100m' or 'United gamble with expensive Fred signing'

Know nothing about this guy so neutral feelings on this. From what I gather, he's (or what we hope to be) an upgrade on Herrera.

Is there any chance of him playing for Brazil at the WC?

Yep but he’s leaps and bounds ahead of Herrera.

As a starter, Fred is of starting quality something which Herrera isn’t. And he’s far more skilled with the ball and making a play.

@ the latter, maybe coming off the bench. Brazil’s mid is stacked so it’ll be tough for him to get minutes.

It often looks like Fred is playing in fast-forward while everyone else is playing at normal speed.

I think his energy will do wonders for our midfield.

Sounds like he's sort of in the Fernandinho mould.
From little I saw of him over past seasons in EL, CL, more like Naby Keita: all action midfielder. Dribbling and run plenty. Involved heavily defensively doing dirty work, but not quite positional disciplined enough to sit & protect the backline (Fernandinho's main duty).

I'd say sign Savic as well, don't rely too much on Pogba... I think He needs more competition. Not for 100m though! We still need fullbacks and RW.

I still think that team lacks teeth offensively. I don't see the need to overhaul and sign 3 new defenders, Perhaps just Sandro and Alderweireld? I would also rather pass on Willian until someone who is potentially world class is available.

Ive always judged our wingers by the likes of Giggs, Ronaldo, Best. Essentially I think we should be looking for a world beater at RW, not just a steady upgrade who is already ageing.

And Continue with Valencia on the right? Hell no he needs benching too.

That is 5 attempted tackles of which only 56% are won. He ranks tied for 42nd in successful tackles. It isn't ridiculous at all. Many b2b midfielders put in more tackles than a pure DM anyway.

I still think a 433 might not get the best out of our players, especially the forwards. A 4312/442Diamond will be much better in my opinion, with one of the 2 forwards going out to the flanks once in while to create space, while most of the width come from our full backs.

Sanchez in Taliscas position and give Martial that Forward role with licence to go left. Sadly wont happen.

I'm all for this signing but why didn't we just buy Keita then? He's undoubtedly the superior player.

Average over 2 successful tackles is good. Unsuccessful tackles can be useful in a sense: making tactical foul and break play. I am not saying he is that good or anything, as I said I don't see him enough. Just try to explore possibilities.

So is this a replacement for Carrick or Fellaini (when he hopefully leaves) ? Because he looks like neither of them. Maybe Mou thinking about changing his structure in midfield? Transfermarkt says he is only 169 cms (5'6.54) like Kante is? Is he any like him? I thought he was a box-to-box midfielder?

If he does what Fernandinho does for City that would be most excellent.

Agreed and said the same thing in another thread. That would be brilliant.

Did you know a football squad is different to a Pokemon deck?

Good to hear people rate him so highly. Hopefully a great start to the window for United and Mourinho.

From the little that I have seen of Shakhtar, Fred reminds me a lot of Edgar Davids - tenacious and energetic with very quick feet, skill. technique and incisive passing. He's really a more flamboyant and less disciplined version of Herrera, and would be a better option to play in a 3 man midfield against lesser sides.

This is my concern. Although Keita is a better fit for Liverpool due to their need for different qualities in central midfield.

Just average over 2 isn't particularly good. Fred got 2.9 and is only tied 42nd. You need 2.8 just to be in the top 50 in the CL. Unsuccessful tackles aren't talking about making tactical fouls, it is him getting dribbled and by the stats he gets dribbled a disproportionate amount of times compared to others.

I haven't watched him either, I'm just pointing out that the stat posted wasn't particularly great let alone called ridiculous.

Haven’t you heard? 25 is the new 30. Do. Not. Want.

25 is the new 70 the way some people carry on. Completely ignoring that sports science has come a long way since of the days of drinking smoking and staying up to all hours before a match. If a player adheres to their strict regiment there’s nothing to stop them carrying on to 35 maybe even 40 in some cases. At the very least getting 5 years out of a guy for 50m in today’s silly money transfer market is pretty good.

He looks really comfortable on the ball. We need someone other than Pogba who can receive the ball from the defence and withstand a bit of pressure/get out of tight spaces without shitting himself and passing it backwards, à la Hererra.

How do I know?

Here is just wild guess to keep an open mind on the topic:

1. Perhaps we don't like the idea to spend considerable sum and leave the player at other club risking the pick up huge injury (didn't happen, but could have)? L'pool took risk because they're aware this summer it would be difficult to acquire him with lower release clause as other clubs would be sniffing around. They paid more than his now supposed release clause.

2. Or perhaps, we didn't need a player of his profile back then but now needed with plan to play Pogba full time as third midfielder?

3. Or simply we rate Fred higher. Here again is just baseless wild guess to make the point: what if Fred despite his playing style is more know how in dodging cards for his foul than Keita (who has been sent off quite many times this season from what I heard). Naby Keita may be better overall but key detail like that is more considered in term of compatibility to our existing squad...

We don't really know. Point is if Fred is good for us helping us achieving our end goal, it's all that matters. He doesn't need to better than Keita or best all action player himself in the world. Him to help someone like Pogba to be at his best can do wonder.

I don't disagree. Just point out another angle of "when stats is not great indication".

Yes, I don't know a great deal about him besides the content of this thread. Trust in the muppets.

Getting business done before the world cup kicks off is always a wise move. Plus we have another player to cheer on.

Having YouTube'd the arse off him, I can confirm he's a bit like a left footed Kante. With the quality and flair on the ball notched up a fair bit and the tackling and ground cover notched down a fair bit.

So not majorly like him

But a bit.

Player with good qualities no doubt. I think he'll link well with our forwards and give us a right sided creative spark we totally lack. Will obviously need to adapt to the pace of the premier league.

I’m excited about this, one of the most criminally underrated and exciting players Chelsea had under Mourinho v1.0 was Ramires. I rated him highly and really enjoyed watching him play, and would have had him at United in a heartbeat. This might be our Ramires!

He was a tactical joy for Mourinho. Fred's passing is much better, though.
