His performance in the CL v City.

Bloody hell. I know it's only one game, but have you guys watched this? He looks fecking awful. Terrible first touch, I'm actually shocked at how bad it is...and I mean worse than Lukaku or Fellaini.

From what I've seen he's a player who likes to pass the ball forward and he's got the ability to drive the ball up the field. IMHO, that's exactly what we need. He'd supplement Matic and Pogba well. Looks better than Herrera, McT and Fellaini at least.

Granted, I've only seen him a few times but he looked bang average. Let's hope I reverse-jinx the whole thing and he'll end up being amazing. (if we sign him)

Should be confirmed soon.

Very nice to see such humility. Rather than fleecing us, they put the player's interest first.

Unlike some who won't even let smooth negotiations for a second choice belgian CB

He is at least a player who can carry the team forward in the absence of Pogba. Our season started to go down just as Pogba injured in CL. We needed someone like him dramatically.

Because they're centre midfielders. Playing on the right hand side of central midfield doesn't affect a left footer like a left footer playing right wing. An inverted centre midfielder doesn't make any sense.
In a 433, it does to a small extent, especially if it's both midfielders. The wide midfielders are expected to handle their side of the pitch, get the ball to the forwards and pull wide at any opportunity. The midfield will struggle to function really well if both wide midfielders are on their weak side of the pitch. The play will be too narrow, and the ball won't stop coming infield.

If he’s playing on Sunday, does anyone know when the Brazil squad are meeting up?

Could this actually be happening now?

If we were playing three strikers, yeah. But we don't. Our wingers will be playing back just in front of the midfield. It won't be a problem at all because we don't play like that. Pogba drifts left, because he gets more space on the ball there, it doesn't mean every one of our midfielders will be drifting wide, hell most won't even think of that. They will be covering their area of the pitch, but as central midfielders, that will be inside the full backs and wingers.

I doubt the average player improves a lot from age 25 (though I'm sure examples can be found).

Plus, it's only 4 years from 29 which is almost 30. Borderline, this signing. :nervous:

Don't tell that to the 'Lingard is a youngster' crowd.

Pogba has looked bang average many times this season. Imagine judging his talents based on those games.

I can’t say I’ve watched this guy enough to form any sort of opinion. Is this player really going to solve our midfield issues?

We replaced Keane with Carrick so I don`t see a problem to have a different kind of player now, except there will probably be another midfielder coming..

Also with Fred in midfield , his transition to attack and workrate, we could be pressing higher up the pitch and more openings come for us. We looked pretty good at the start of the season but then totally useless in that regard and Fred looks like ap layer who could make our midfield work faster. As I said in my previous comment Herrera-Fred-Pogba in combination with Sanchez and Willian could apply some great pressure higher up the pitch and make us play much more aggressive, then we can always set up with Matic and Pogba in midfield but that makes us a bit too slow in build up even though a bit more solid defensively, while defensing in a deep block.

In other addition Jorginho is hardly Fabregas, hes a solid holding midfielder who can pass the ball but I dont believe hes even on the same level as Carrick in terms of passing, hes a bit overrated by media and fans in my view. We should get some proper winger on the right fix our fullback issues, make Pogba play well, and that should add a lot of creativity itself by adding a dynamic midfielder.. however I believe there might be one more coming, a bit more creative, in fact R. Neves would be a great fit to have a fantastic set of midfielder capable to set up different ways, but hes not coming this summer so maybe Savic, but hes a bit too slow and not DLP, what would be my choice along with Fred the red

I don't think the Keane- Carrick argument applies to this instance one bit. It's always about the level of entire Midfield combination and the Dynamics of teams attacking and defensive structure,Midfield control and teams Transition play.

I Agree Fred's work rate and energy will help us press higher up the pitch and thus bring us that ability to break play higher up the pitch and maintain a better proactive defensive control higher up the pitch , but all these qualities tend to matter when the team has just lost the ball posession and the Opposition is trying to counter attack or build up their attack. These qualities come into play Off the Ball or without the ball. It's what we do on the ball and with the ball when the opponent has been defending with 10 men in their own half is what matters to us going forward, and Majority of teams in Epl play that way which we have struggled to break down over and over again and the teams defensive and midfeild control or ball Recovery was not a big problem in those games. Those sort of teams Rarely show enough ambition to attack. What Makes a team efficient and Ruthless in attack is the ability to create space, play make, Spot a Dangerous pass with the Movement in behind which always is a nightmare for defenders. Now Fred will not Bring those Qualities on that level. One can put enough pressure and keep on circulation the ball sideways and put in crosses but epl teams can absorb that if the team does not have Movement Width and deadly passing vision and Playmaking Going forward.

Keane played with the likes of Scholes and Beckham and Cantona who had incredible vision, playmaking skills Goal scoring ability and also we played with natural width those days and two strikers which creates more space in final third.

There's a Popular football saying that "The Ball travels Faster than the Player". Transition is Faster with a player who can spot an inch perfect quick attacking pass and find a attacker who's making the run in behind and stretching the play than a ball Carrier Midfielder Like Pogba and Fred and Matic who keep the ball so long in their feet and try to dribble past 2-3 players and loose the Ball Possession in the final third and only Needing to win the Ball back over and over again or passing it sideways and backwards to recyle the ball without any game opening pass or get fouled and fall down.

Pogba ain't a player like Scholes who is that efficient with the ball in his feet, neither Matic can create on his own when the passing lanes are Blocked and Fred is not on that level passing wise as well.

The Transition play will improve against teams who play attacking football as they give space to penetrate in the midfield not against defensive teams we struggle to break down.

So the overall midfield dynamic and transition will not be as fast and good enough to score easy goals and be ruthless fearsome going forward. Only the right profile of signings will Make us the team other teams are scared of. Efficient Playmakers are a must in a Ruthless team and I hope we are secretly interested in them as well. DLP and attacking Playmakers is the need of this team as per me.

Not sure.

Players like Antonio De Natale come to mind though. He only started top flight football at 25 in Seria A. Ian Wright also comes to mind. If I recall well, he joined the premier league at 26. And of course there are players like Diego Milito, Jamie Vardy and co. It can be argued that they improved late or at least their real talents came out late.

You have to admit that inverted midfielders sounds exotic. Maybe we should try inverted strikers?

On his own? Then no. Really depends how Jose plans to set up next season. If he wants similar to what we have played in his previous 2 years then Fred will play in the Herrera role. He is a much better passer then Herrera and is more dynamic, but not the game changer that we need. Savic would fit that type, But then again I fail to see how he and Pogba could co-exist in the same line up. So I think Fred will be a good signing in that he is an upgrade to Herrera, McTominay and 2018 Carrick. But if we are to completely revolutionise the midfield then we would need Fred and someone else IMO.

Don’t know anything about him but can’t be any worse than what we have so I’m happy.

Remembering the last six years of SAF's reign, I get excited any time we sign any midfielder.

I'd guess an agreement could be officially announced today.

Anyone actually watched this guy enough? Looks absolutely crap in that Man City game highlights video.

That’s got my muppet juices flowing

need to get the next one tied up now.
