Excellent today. While I've been critical of Fred as he is infuriatingly erratic, I think he gets a really raw deal as everyone lumps him with Mctominay. He's twice the player the latter is and a good footballer who has his purposes. Some of his play today was great.

One thing I really like about him is he'll play his heart out regardless of who the manager is. He's looks like he enjoys being a United player.

Felt he was magic today. He has that Brazilian skilled approach the more further up he plays.

Always see some fake compliments over here in a "good but never long term option". While he's our by far best and most consistent midfielder in the last 5 years. Easily outpeformed Schweinsteigger, Schneiderlin, Matic, McTominay, Herrera probably too.. yet he's not good enough.

He's more seen forward contributing to attack now for those too slow to understand the game and appreciate him but even before in his deeper role, he showed how absolutely crucial he's for our defensive game which was often nonexistent whenever he wasn't playing. Obviously people who seen footy only from the tv or playstation overlook his defensive work, covering tackling, forcing errors and one touch passing in high pace with decent vision which all gives other players the freedom to attack and create

There's a real struggle to give him credit in his more timid games and never allow him to make a mistake for some reason. But today he was just ridiculous and that's something considering he played in that midfield pretty much alone again, with grandpa Matic and linguid Pogba giving the ball away with their every second touch not being able to close down spaces quickly enough when we couldn't get near the ball.

So yeah he's definitely in a title winning team but the standard around him obviously need to get better. Not just the statistics show that we are much better team when he plays.

i’m none of those - you could’ve stated your views without saying things like this. Nothing to talk about here

Mad that him playing like an actual midfielder gets so much praise.

That's a bog standard midfield performance in my book, if that's an exceptional performance from Fred it just shows how low he's set the bar.
Yeah now if only Pogba, Bruno, Matic and McT could catch up to that level we’d at least be average

He's a very good player when he wants to be. He's seemed to have improved his passing and shooting which was a big weakness of his, now he just needs to improve his consistency.

Haters will always hate and the vultures will always be circling waiting for the next misplaced pass or missed tackle. I guess we all see what we want to in players depending on whether we like them or not. To some of us, that performance wasn’t a surprise, seen it very briefly under Carrick and it’s been coming under RR.

Fred isn’t a CDM, it’s a specialist position that he has been shoehorned into. All his worst attributes are exposed playing there, the same for Scott, Bruno and even Pogs. Fred is a 8 and first thing Carrick did for that brief moment in charge was to play him there and his goals and assist this season has proven that since RR took over. For someone who supposedly can’t shoot or pass, have a look at the quality of both. Also, look at the games or the moments in the games when they happen. Many of the games, they have significantly contributed to the win whether winning the penalty against Arsenal, to go in front at Leeds or the pass against West Ham. I think RR recognises that….

The other weird thing about Fred, his best games are often against the best sides. Not really the traits of a bottom half or championship player?

All that aside, he must have skin as thick as a crocodile. His own Fans, players, ex players lambast him, yet ability aside, he clearly is proud to wear the shirt. Whether you rate him or not, his commitment to the side and players is never in question. He works and runs harder than any other player sometimes to his detriment and COVID aside, he’s never injured. It’s a pity that Pogs wasn’t more Fred-like.

Also what’s funny about Fred, the little fecker if it goes off on the pitch, he’s always the first to get stuck in. Maybe he’s not the answer, maybe he’s not 50m in a inflated transfer market, maybe he has brain fart moments but he deserves much more respect than he’s given.

He needs to be more consistent but even the GOAT can’t achieve that in this team.

Quality performance from the Brazilian workhorse yesterday :)

Is that the beginning of the end for Mcfred??? can’t ever remember Fred playing like that when Scotty was next to him, buy a quality DM like a younger Matic and see Fred flourish

He has had a ton of really good matches, I am a fan of his.

With that said he had never had a game for us where he looked so good on the ball. He looked like Modric mixed with Kante today, it is no backhanded compliment to say that is his best ever performance for us.
He was very good on the ball yesterday, agreed. However, I genuinely feel that he is a lot better on the ball than people realise. Yeah, he throws in the odd sloppy pass or miscontrol and you're left questioning his technique, but in comparison to Kante for example, his pass completion percentages are very similar. To add to that, Fred is a lot more ambitious and progressive in his play. He has the odd moment of Brazilian flair too. I'm amazed at how underrated he is.

Not as stupid as people claiming it was his best ever game for the club.

He wasn't even the best midfielder in the pitch.

Looked to me like his best game and if it wasn't, it was close enough. Hardly stupid.

Fred made more tackles, more interceptions, and completed a higher % of passes. He also got 1 assist to 0.

Hjobjerg had more of the ball because - unlike Fred - he wasn’t asked to be a one man midfield.

Hjøbjerg had twice as many passes and a higher pass accuracy. He didn't have to tackle so much because he had more of the ball, technically and intelligently he's just a better footballer than Fred.

That Utd midfield with or without Fred is just incapable of playing any kind of possession based game. Yet again schooled by players who wouldn't even be considered good enough to be signed by Utd.

Yet, he created nothing. Fred had 3 key passes leading to chances; Hjobjerg had 0. They were even saying about the lack of creativity from Tottenham's midfield on Sky; they did not create anything.

The only thing that I remember was one Hjobjerg long pass into the box, but it was too hard. Other than that, nothing.

This has been a massive issue with Tottenham's midfield all season. They don't create anything.

You must be just some attention hoe surely or entirely stupid :wenger:

It was a superb performance all round, ditch the booze mate

Why is that mate? Because I don't think it was his best performance ever in a Utd shirt? That I don't think that him eventually doing the basics required of a midfielder should warrant such ridiculously high praise.

It's really all about standards, we've come to expect such mediocre performance from this guy for 4 years. All of sudden he has a game where he runs around and plays a few decent passes. It's a superb performance and his best ever in a Utd shirt??

What I do know is that at a very minimum we should be seeing that from a 50m midfielder more often than not. For me he played well, but "a superb performance all round" it was not.

He hasn't been mediocre for 4 years. That's the problem, the premise is already incorrect in my opinion so it's not as if this is a bolt out of the blue or some hysterical reaction.

He's been our best midfielder over those 4 years. He's had many good performances. He's had some crap form too, there's no arguing that but overall he's been our most consistent midfielder. Despite being asked to partner players like Pogba, Matic and McTominay who no other top club would rely upon for reasons of quality or unsuitability to play the roles asked of them.

It’s hilarious that no matter how well Fred plays, you ALWAYS get one or two that try to claim he was bang average.

Some get so wrapped up in “not rating” player X or Y they think that particular player can literally never have a good game. Like they’d prefer a player has a poor game to be “right” rather than a good game to benefit the club they supposedly support. Causes too much strain on their simplistic narratives about players.

He still shouldn't be a starter in this team but benefitted playing further forward

Really showed what he can do when the conditions are right. If we don’t buy a cdm I’m giving up watching football

He definitely was. Had an excellent game. Will struggle when we're pressed but he's a solid enough player overall.

If he has really been our best midfielder over the last 4 years as some claim (and it might actually be true) it is testament to the sad state of affairs that is our midfield.

Fred was excellent in this game but him like McT occasionally has these outstanding games but on the whole they both are mediocre to say the least. If Fred could consistently deliver yesterday’s performance like Scholes and Carrick and other great midfielders we had did there could be some hope for him.

Let’s not make it out like that performance was the norm however when his last 5 games have been bad.

He has good games far, far more often than Scott.
