Foreign secretary advice to LGBT fans.... Be respectful

Not a dig at you or anything - but I do find it funny when these things are put in there as criticisms alongside other legitimate issues. They're so trivial by comparison, and in a world where the other stuff was all sorted out, really wouldn't be an issue.

Indeed, but it's more how emblematic of the type of obtrusuve regime or government you are dealing with. For them to think they can tell you when or who you can or can't shag is usually not an outlier of an otherwise Liberal and tolerant system of governance.

The same apples to the Christian Gospels. Leviticus, from the Old Testament, I have read and that seems to say that when you lie with a man as with a woman you should be killed.

What's pretty interesting is that Jewish and early Christian (and later Islamic) jurisprudence on the whole doesn't seem to consider homosexuality as something particularly abominable: in general, sex for other purposes than reproduction (or more precisely: the reproduction of one's own, legitimate offspring) is considered sinful: masturbation, adultery, anal sex, visiting prostitutes...all bad (and all could potentially get you stoned).

But homosexuality is not singled out as being worse than the above - all forms of non-productive sexual acts are much of a muchness, really. Visit a prostitute? Sinful, no doubt, shouldn't do that, could get stoned. But whether that prostitute is female or male...is actually less of a concern. Which reflects the culture in which these texts were written, one could add: male prostitutes were common and a quite popular choice among yer johns of the time and place.

As an LGBT fan, I cannot begin to describe how sickening all this is for me. I’m supposed to just suck it up and “don’t go to the World Cup if you don’t like it (being told you’re brain damaged for being gay or being put behind bars)”.

Do any of you defending this, or telling me to respect their backwards culture, know how this feels? Have you ever had such hatred and discrimination aimed towards you for something you were born with and can’t change? It’s horrifying. We’re made to feel non human, like our lives are not valued.

Seeing the many homophobic replies on Twitter is a soul crushing experience. And even this forum isn’t a safe space, having read what some of the opinions are on here.

The fact that comments made by this ambassador don’t really cause any real outrage and that this WC will still go ahead, regardless of what else they might say, just shows that our lives really don’t matter all that much.

There’s no real point to my post, I just needed to get that off my chest.

You're right.

If the national FAs of countries that are supposedly dedicated to protecting LGBT rights had any integrity, they would withdraw from this shitshow.

Alternatively, the governments of these countries should force the FAs to withdraw their teams.

As others have pointed out, this guy may be a complete idiot. But does anyone doubt that he represents the genuine beliefs/views of the people who rule his country? I don't.

To be fair while I doubt It'll be fully enforced due to the backlash. By the law it could be a lengthy prison sentence.

Yes, this must be soul destroying, not only the filthy process that allowed the damn thing go to Qatar but some of the dialogue in these threads must be sickening.

Particularly vile and sadly quite common is the idea that solidarity is racist or an attack on someone else rather than just empathy and care. The idea that the LGBT community are just dismissed as pawns has really really upset and angered me in these threads. Whatever about Fifa and Qatar, people with no apparent vested interest are just as callous and cold.

Your lives do matter though, but all of us are disposable if we are a hindrance to profit. In that way capitalism doesn't discriminate.

It's just a really fecking obvious case of insult to injury in the whole story of solidarity with and inclusivity for the LGBT community.

Thank you for posting.

He just said the quiet bit out loud.

In Ireland our FA are a corrupt shambles, less so than a decade ago but still a damp squib.

Our spineless middle management style government won't rock any boats for the right reasons. So yes, while there are obvious villains there is a huge and insidious supporting cast.

I agree with everything here. Apart from the last sentence of course.

It's not just twitter either, you are right. As much as I love the Caf there's a lot of opinions posted on here that shows just how far we have to go as a species.

Hopefully the world actually learns from this the next time a gulf state or Saudi Arabia want to sports wash by buying a football club. Or hijacking a quarter of the f1 calendar. Or all the golfers. Oh and the heavyweight boxing events. Wait, we’re too late.

Money talks huh

Keep in mind there's a lot of us, the majority, who support you. Polling conclusively shows that the majority support equality and accept you for who you are.

The minority of bigots? well they're just about bigots in every aspect, we all unfortunately have to put up with the knuckle draggers.

Feck me what a Cnut to say that.

Oh sorry I mean “respect the cultural differences.”

Absolutely disgusting can’t even fathom how he thought that was an ok thing to say. What a Cnut.

Thank you man . I really do hope this is the case.

100% it is, in fact it's a pet peeve of mine when any equality is trampled on (genuinely upsets me)

My personal belief is we all evolved from an ape like creature, so just really think about that. We all evolved from an ape like creature, think of the vast number of changes for that evolution to happen.

so what the hell is "normal"? There is no "normal", humans can come in many different shapes and sizes and orientations and this is what makes us all equal!

Thank you @moses. I just wanted to acknowledge your post and that I appreciate it so much. You put it more eloquently than I was able to.

It’s hard for me to post on this topic without being overcome with emotion and saying things I may later regret.

I feel you my friend. People say too me all the time, it’s alright being gay now, excepted, you can get married, have kids. Which is true we have come along way.. but it’s not just a uk problem/western problem (and even that is a long way off, my friends recently got beat badly by three men because she was holding her girlfriends hand in the street) this is a international one. Until we’re just treated like humans the same as everyone all over the world, we must always keep speaking our truth and fighting for all the less fortunate people to be born in certain places. It’s too hard for some people to fathom that we’re just human beings like anyone else. Same fears/worries/joys. We even love the same.. we’re just not attracted to people of the opposite sex but the same one. That’s literally it. Even that isn’t a choice but many just don’t understand that. It’s difficult to imagine if your not I guess.. but it’s the most natural thing in the world to a gay person. It isn’t forced or contrived, just natural.

such a long way to go and football is really highlighting it at the moment despite the armbands and adverts. It’s all one big joke but we got to remember that many people stand with us.

Goretzka is generally very reflected and it doesn't surprise me to see him respond. Good on him and glad he is part of "my" team.
Yeah. Goretzka is a standup guy. Really respect him.

For some reason I don't have a "like" icon so can't like this. But I'm with you all the way - and there is a very good point to your post.

I grew up in the UK being "illegal" for years and years (no pun intended re Olly Alexander) and people like this "world cup ambassador" (whatever the feck that is: jobs for mates?) make me want to vomit. he asks us to respect them but shows no respect to us.

He can take his haram and shove it up his arse. I really hope the competition is massive failure and wouldn't give the bast@ard a penny of my money but of course those who want to go should be able to without fear or need to "conform". James Cleverly is a cowardly arse for the comment he made: wonder what he would say if the issue was the colour of skin and not who you want to sleep with...

No clue. It was heartening to hear someone with his exposure come down so forcefully on the right side of this issue.

Yeah, indeed.

It's not surprising - as such - that footballers (or rather: their social media people) stay away from commenting on anything remotely controversial, of course.

But you'd think that this thing was a bit different. I mean, we're talking about a fecker who attributed homosexuality to brain damage. A fecker who happens to be an official "ambassador" for the World Cup.

ETA All the more credit to Goretzka, of course - just wish the likes of Messi or Ronaldo would issue similar statements. Wouldn't that have been something?

Yes, it would indeed be nice if many more footballers took the same line as Goretzka. But he has always been a bit special, because he often doesn't mince his words when it comes to racism or the LGBT community, for example. He is one of the good guys and an ally.

The vitriol of this thread. Whether you think it is backwards or not, it is still their house. Who the feck goes into someone's house and tries to dictate rules to them. That is some real imperial behaviour. Some people hate you and some places are poor choices to visit. Get over it. You won't find me, an african, setting foot in Eastern Europe or China for that matter since I would be treated like dirt. No need to make a whole thing about it, just don't support/go.

Anyone who gives a shit about what happens to the other people in that house.

You or I may not care but plenty of others do and if they see oppression or abuse, that it happens in someone else's house isn't really relevant.

It's not their house, they were bidding for the World Cup themselves and they knew then already that they have to respect all the countries and people taking part in the tournament - if you want to live in the middle ages, then go for it, but don't expect all the World coming to visit to come to the middle ages with you.

World Cup belongs to everyone and everyone can freely express their free speech and beliefs as they want.

WTF do you mean it not their house? They placed a bid to have the WC hosted at their house. FIFA, who the WC belongs to, decided to host it at their house.

Now I don't know about you, but whenever I go to a host's house I respect their rules or don't go. That's the crux of my original post. Don't like the host's rules, then don't go instead of going into the whole self-pitying self-flagellating woe is me episodes I have read in this thread.

Everyone is free to express their free speech and beliefs as they want, as am I to comment on their free speech and beliefs.

Always a particularly stupid cliché, not least because stopping to think about it for even a second prompts you to realise that it simply isn't true.

If someone is beating their wife or abusing their children, it doesn't matter that they're doing it within their own home. Ditto any of literally a million other things people are expected not to do. We constantly dictate to people what they can and can't do in their own house. That's how society functions.

The original post was about being "respectful" and not doing PDA. Are you now conflating that to spousal or child abuse? Obviously it would be obtuse to say that we can't dictate what people do in their house or else people could run fecking rape dens in their house and use that as an excuse, stop being deliberately obtuse.

You simply ain't very bright. We all know the way how Qatar got their WC was a shambles. Now if you look behind all the World Cup, Eurovision or Olympic Hosts, they all say that once the event starts they live for their guests fully, not that all the guests now have to do as they want now and abandon all their own free mind.

How any WC winner wins their bid is a shambles, thus irrelevant.

On to living for their guests fully, I don't know about that, having lived in a host nation during a world cup, definately not the general vibe out here.

There only thing was how much money can be made from said guests and whether this stadiums will be white elephants after the WC. Qatar being a rich as it does, doesn't seem to have that concern/care to maximise the money to be earnt.

Rapes happen inside houses all the time, it's by far the most common sort of place to be raped. If it wasn't punished it would happen even more, so I'm glad that some people do care about what happens inside houses.

Can’t believe they haven’t built any stadiums and are just playing in houses

It's well known that when England lose domestic violence goes through the roof.

No one cares, England still lose
