Gaming Football Manager 2014

So I started a game unemployed with international football experience.

Got the Swansea job.

First season I finished 14th (almost got relegated) but won the euro cup, beating AC Milan, Zenit and Benfica along the way. Was very odd. Couldn't get the team to perform domestically but had no problem at all in the cup.

Anybody else have a season like this? Overperform in one competition and underperform in another?

Weirdest takeover ever.

Personal messages from the new board,
1, we pumped 4m into the club finances.
2, we're upgrading your youth and training setup. (I had just done this already, superb training/excellent youth) There are no nw tickers in the board promises to show that they actually are going to upgrade again, perhaps they're trying to take credit for my work?
3, we're giving you an extra 2m transfer budget.
4, But we're probably going to sack you anyway.
5, Media report connections with Van Basten.

Van Basten was seen scouting at my games before the takeover had started proper, but he's taken a job at Bordeaux since.

I think in Marcus Diniz, SI have successfully managed to replicate a Newcastle-era, Bramble-esque defender.

The guy is a walking bomb scare.

So, they kept me "due to overwhelming support", lifted the embargo, and work on the training facilities started(but not the youth, but they were a level higher anyway). Instantly put a bid in on that kid at St Pauli, accepted, get in!

It was my third or fourth fifth (edited) season with Villarreal, I just signed a couple of brilliant players on a free (lucas ocampos, niang and couple of regens) and thought that all would be all right but I started horrendously in the league - I think that I nearly avoided being sacked - my rival managers were starting to talk about it in their interviews. Barely managed to get out of the CL group on a goal difference (it was a tough one though, with PSG and Juventus), but then went on and won Copa del Rei and Champions League, beating City on the way and almighty Bayern (they won it 4 in a row and lost 1 final to City) on penalties in the final.

I managed to take the 4 place in the league but it was mainly due the underperforming of my rivals.

Another interesting stat from that season - my star striker, who had 34, 27 and 28 league goals in the previous seasons scored (!) 9 goals in the league. While scoring 12 in the Champions league (he was CL's top-scorer, obviously, and was voted Best Player).

Still don't know what happened there. Probably too young and inexperienced squad with too many new players signed, but they were fantastic for the most of the big matches (versus my traditional rivals and in the CL) and disastrous in the others.

They both demanded a new contract after the CL win though, so their wages are a bit high now, but still :drool::drool:

Troy Deeney has been included in England's preliminary squad for Euro 2016 .

I always have my doubts when people say they won the UCL 4 years into the game with a sub par side to begin with. You can't really win it without manipulating fixtures and results.

If you're talking about me and my Villarreal (I guess so), than I really don't know what you're implying. Though I was mistaken, it wasn't my 4 season, it was my 5, 2017/18 - and in the 2016/17 I lost to Arsenal in 1/8. You can built a pretty decent team on an average budget and with an amount of luck win a CL - it's all about sitting deep with a pacey players upfront and a good set-piece management. La Liga is way harder for me, because it's way more difficult on a distance to compete with giants.

What's the fun in manipulating results?

Berahino: There's too many strikers round these parts, I might have to leave.

*sell one striker, release another*

Berahino: You haven't done anything! I'm handing in a transfer request.

But...but...the...I...:(

Lot of surprisingly good free agents and transfer listed players pop up. Were there not strict wage rules in Austria, I could have Matic for a couple of mil, and he's about the best anchorman in the game. That and a 2.5-3* player that's heavily focused on key attributes can be as good as any player.

I picked up Adam Vass for 400k, 3* and while not as good as Matic, he's an immense anchorman, or ball winner, natural in CM and DM, absolute key player for me, as is Kyrgiakos(sadly retiring) 2.5* but an absolute brick wall.

CB's with great heading and jumping reach(ie 6'6 guys) can play well beyond what their other attributes and ability dictate too.

I wanna start a game with an underwhelming, English side with ambitions to become a midtable side.. Abit like Moyes at Everton! Just to see how long the board will keep me, and to create a team to make profit from creating youngsters, and not having to compete for the same trophies over and over again. Doesnt sound like much fun, but I think it can be plenty of entertainment!

It does, actually

Sounds great craic, can never keep them saves up though! Get too ambitious.

I won the CL in my 4th season with Leipzig. Started in the 3rd division. Had some luck with the draws admittedly but beat Dortmund 1-0 in the final. Had Milan, Lyon and some other club in the KO stages, cant recall which one. Did make a post about it here iirc but cant be bothered to search now. I found it easier because you can really develop the players if you start low, my side's average age must be 23-24 atm and its actually got so boring now(the league) that I havent played in a week or so. If I win the CL again, I'l resign and move to some other club probably.

That's why I stopped with Leipzig, walked up the leagues, was getting far too easy.

Just picked up Niklas Stark for 350k, tidy. Will make a fine rotation option, especially in the league.

Never mentioned it, but the new board pumped my wages too, just noticed it was at 350k. Still can't offer huge wages though.

Yeah, the bundesliga is a bit tedious. That's why I like the PL a lot more, much more competitive.

Wow!
My best achievement was CL (and, eventually, total european dominance) with Mordovia in FM12. I started in first division (=Russian Championship) and went all the way up. The limit was tough though, you should keep 5 or 6 Russian players on the pitch and there wasn't enough talent in the country to have 6 top players. I was lucky to have brand new 50000 stadium for the 2018 World Cup - didn't know about that when I started that save. I think that I won CL on the 4th or 5th year.
I still remember "first world Russian problems" - they gave me 30m budget to spend and no one good enough wanted to come to me - we don't know about your club and don't want to negotiate with you - and I just won CL ffs  I think I spent around 5m in that window

But to come from the 3rd division! Just wow.

I'm quite enjoying the Austrian Bundesliga, I mean, my B team should walk the league and cup, but Europe is a bollocks, really difficult. Great players won't join you, and the ones that will consider it as for way more wages than is viable.

Still I've got a great squad, if I can keep it together, long enough for my 18-19 years olds to start reaching their potential, I could be a dark horse.

I lost only one game in my CL group, would be more impressive if I didn't draw 4.....

Cheers. :)

These limits/restrictions can be a real pain in a country like Russia. 5 players is way over the top.

Aye, that's the best way to do it. Buy absolutely young kids at 18 odd and give them game time. Brilliant development.

The part in bold is

Oh, I need a tip here, actually. Do any of you know is there a way to increase your attendance? I'm afraid that I am doomed to have around 20k on my stadium. I'm great at promoting my brand worldwide, but I guess that I couldn't do more for people to come? Villarreal only has population around 50k sadly.

Better results and winning things usually increases my attendance.

It does, but it increased from 17k to 19k over 5 seasons. I have full attendance (23000) only for Valencia, Levante, Madrid, Barca and top-european teams. I'm afraid that this depends on a city population, because I'm 12th team in the world based on the reputation (higher than Manchester United, thanks to Moyes, Klopp, Simeone and Ole ). But I was hoping that there is some magic trick)

Has anyone noticed that form means nothing in this game. Especially when you play a big club, most of the time that is. The only time I have actually beaten a top club in the premier league with a lesser side was Arsenal, but because they were already at that point close to relegation I guess that meant I could put 4 past them. But in this save, I've been testing this Liverpool match, and apparently their home record is abysmal, yet I keep getting smashed by them no matter what I do.

No trick am afraid. I'm incredibly successful at Leipzig but cnuts still dont fill out the stadium, not even close.

It does matter, just not that much. Bad form = bad mood, and when they're in a bad mood they actually play worse than they can. I don't know if there is any other hidden characteristic that depends on form though, maybe there is.
There certainly is something with forwards that can't score for a long time - they become frustrated and can't tap in easy chances.

But it has happened every single time, they are shit, then all of a sudden raise their game against me.

Alright, started a game with Crystal Palace. They're doomed to be relegated, but I'll try to keep them up and have them slowly turn into a decent midtable side. Hopefully I wont have too much success, and I gotta make sure I dont get too greedy and try to challenge for the top spots.. Brought in Tom Ince on a permanent deal and Ibrahim Affelay as my only signings, hopefully the squad is average enough to stay up :D

Young lad, waiting until he was 18 to join, arrived, popped him on for 15 mins at the end of my next game, some lad comes along and breaks his ankle. :( 3 months, and I have no left wing cover now.

Why Affelay? Aiming to bring in mediocre on purpose?

 He was available and a huge upgrade on anything I had at ACM. I needed someone experienced in there as well, and hopefully he's someone who'll be worth a decent amount if he hits some form.

This is actually really fun! Lost 2-0 at home to Villa, beating MK Dons in the cup at the moment though :D

Honestly, a team with a core consisting of Scott Dann, Barry Bannan and Chamakh more or less screams "midtable side". I need to buy more midtable players.. Jay Spearing perhaps?

Could have got Humam Tariq for a few hundred k, if you were quick, but there's a fair chance of him being world class.

He is very injury-prone though and is often called up to some made-up international duties he is a terrorist, I know it

Currently being beat by a United-side containing Danny Rose, Ryan Shawcross and Lichsteiner.. Ah, Moyes.. <3

Jesus, some start they handed me! Playing Tottenham, United and Liverpool in my first 4 games in the league!

The injury proneness is randomised, he may or may not be.

Rooney is a terrorist too, what of it?

Tbf, Shawcross is quite class in the game.
