Gaming Football Manager 2009

Just read the review, heres the link if you missed it

Twat, "I couldn’t imagine why anybody would prefer Worldwide Soccer Manager to FIFA 09 or Pro Evolution Soccer 2009. " Because they are two completely different genres of game! One is a sports game, the other is a management simulation.

The graphics don't matter, never have. I spent many days watching circles play against each other and still got excited if it scored from 40 yards.

Just a question for the Americans amongst us, do they have American Football sims, or Ice Hockey sims similar to this over there cause i can't think of any other reason how this guy is so far off the mark?
In case that one gets pulled, here's it WebCited: http://www.webcitation.org/5cwNh5xp1

Think there's a baseball sim game and an ice hockey one.

Started a game as Oxford.

It's hard.

Okay... i have a wank-worthy new Mac Notebook; i need some advice from other user/players:

- are there any compatibility issues with FM and Mac?

- do i get updates?

- does it run smoothly?

1) No not really. There have been these install issues with the Windows version if you use Steam. I'm not sure if it's the same with the Mac version as well (I didn't buy mine if you know what I'm saying). I haven't heard of any specific problems with the Mac version

2) Yes, however Windows patches are usually out a day or two before the Mac ones.
Editors or other 3rd party software are not always compatible with Macs

3) MacBooks (and Cube) could do with a better graphics card but other than that it runs very smoothly.

why are so many of you not playing as united?

It's not much of a challenge. Most of us I am sure don't want to manage the best club in the world, we want to make a club the best in the world ;p

We all wanna be SAF.

I like starting out as lesser clubs, then buliding that team up, moving to Arsenal and then coaching for 7-10 seasons with a realistic strategy and then going to Real Madrid and buying like crazy.

I picked Maidenhead United at random a few FM's ago (05, maybe), because I wanted to play a lower league team. Now it's turned into a sort of tradition, where I'll always start one long-term Maidenhead game. With FM08 I managed to get into the Premier League eventually, but stopped playing it at that point. This time I'm hoping to actually fulfill my ultimate goal, winning the Champions League.

I also always start a long term United game, but I do tend to get bored of it rather quickly. In addition to those two, I try to start a more 'random' game. In the other two, the whole point of the game is to stick with my current club, so I like having a game where I actually try to move clubs if I get a better opportunity.

My long term Arsenal games are always centred around turning all the young english lads into first teamers.

Currently have Gibbs, Rogers, Walcott (obivously), Lansbury (FM god) and Rhys Muprhy in the first team, bought Chambers and Joe Hart in my first season and bought Richards last season (hes 25) as my big player signing.

Rui Fonte and Barazite are also in the first team squad although aren't english. When i can sell of Fonte Wilshere will be promoted to the first team.

Mark Randall signed for villa when the club wouldnt turn down a 7.5m offer... which turned out to be a blessing because a Lansbury is an awesome player.

whats the term... 'Arsenal Kids™' isnt it jasonrh?

Did the treble 2 seasons ago with this squad. The following season i lost the league by 1 point on the last day to United and the champions league final to real madrid.

for me it's about managing united. I want to see Rooney, Anderson, and all the youngsters fulfilling their potential. I can't imagine raki g a team into the premier league and then competing with united. I would love a challenge but I can't manage another side. Wouldn't even seem 'real' for me. :(

Arsenal always seems terrible overrated in FM the last couple of years. I seem to remember them winning the first five leagues in a row in a game on FM08, and now they won the league easily the first season, and are about 25 points ahead of United in second with a few games to go.

Alright, maybe not terribly overrated, but overrated still.

I should add that they're my parent-club. I had Tottenham, but then I swapped them for Arsenal. Currently got a keeper named Wojciech Sczcesny and a defender named Paul Rodgers. Easily my best players on account of me being in the Blue Square Premier.

John Madejski accepted offers for Doyle and Matejovsky, cnut

why are so many of you not playing as united?

It's just too easy.

When i install i always pick united first, get about 6 months into the season then get really bored so start again.

Noticed that happens with most football manager games. But its still fun finding new talent for your united side. But then that's a downside to the game. One should be able to be at a big club and still have challenges because frankly its as not if not more challenging to actually manage a big club with huge expectations in the real world.

IMO if you're admitting that you're going to be illegally downloading it then your opinion doesn't really matter, does it? Don't get me wrong, I've downloaded plenty of games, but if you do then your complaints are worthless.

I am admitting that I will be doing so next time because I have paid out of my pocket for every version of the game since 99/00 and am majorly disappointed that every version since eidos ans SI split has had increasingly omre and more major bugs.

Iam an almost life long fan who feels very let down by the money i've spent this time around.

I think you're grossly overstating the number of bugs. Particularly when the fact is that FM09 has no big bugs at release, something FM08 couldn't claim. I've played over 3 days game time, and I've run into no bugs at all, I think. There was that injury bug, but that was fixed by a patch released on the day of the actual game release.

I've had every CM/FM since CM2 97/98, and I can't think of any version I didn't like and which I didn't think was worth the money.

The injury bug isn't fixed, although it's a little better than the demo.

I'm not entirely convinced there ever was an injury bug. I've played two full seasons, and I've had no abnormal injury problems what so ever. There have been injuries, of course, but never too many at the same time.

The WWSM 2009 guy disagrees...

There are an abnormal number of injuries at the moment (compared with 2008, where they were a rarity).

Madden games have a perfectly good 'sim' built in. All players progress according to stats and age. Realistic player in and outs occur (due to anything being realistic when it comes to NFL). I love playing franchise mode in Madden games.

Hee hee hee.

England failed to qualify for the 2010 World Cup in my game. They came 2nd in their group, after drawing against Belarus, Ukraine and Croatia in their last three matches. Croatia won the group. They then proceeded to get hammered 3-0 away to Germany in the Playoff, and then to top it off 0-3 at home to Germany in the second leg.

Well, it's a far cry from England consistently winning the cups in other FM's

No, there aren't. I can't take your word based on a screenshot (which isn't even you playing), when I haven't seen anything of the sort from 4 days of playing.
There are many, many people complaining on SI's forums about injuries and that screenshot is one of many. There's screenshots of 3 or 4 injured players going off per match (not knocks; actually forced off).

While I admire SI's attempts to mirror Physioroom, the fact remains that you don't get 3 people off with injuries, all down with serious (1 month+) injuries per match.

You may not have encountered it and some haven't, but there's plenty of complaints in the SI forums. Democracy in action?

Then I'll just be glad I apparently got a fine version. And that doesn't detract from my point. FM09 is hardly as immensely buggy as he made it out to be. I also think he's blinded by nostalgia a bit, as I can remember some quite troublesome bugs from the older games. FM09 is probably the best they've done in a few years, so I can't understand why it would be the deciding factor in his decision to not buy the next.

Football Manager 2007, patch 7.0.2 is probably the least-buggy version. There was very little wrong with that version, except some data issues and the fact that the skin is dated.

What the feck is up with corners? Doesn't matter what I try, so many are just pathetic and end up going straight off before they get to the goal.

Full backs seem incapable of following instructions.

Doesn't matter how disciplined your team is, the computer team always has a much more organised shape.

Peter Crouch outpaced and outstrengthed my CB Diakhate to the ball in a straight 50-50 race over 20m. The stats are bullshit when you play the computer.

Hate the fact that my strikers need 5 one on ones with the keeper to score yet the opposition can just cnut them in from 30 yards every time despite being conference players

Having said that though i do like some of the features that come with this match engine. Bringing up player confidence and your assistants tactical analysis n all that.

Very nice touch and something that will only get better and more accurate over time.

Corners are fine, stuck Vidic on the keeper and Berbatov on the front post flicking on, no other changes and I score often enough

I've never liked the sliders on the tactical engine, it is not clear enough what moving a slider up one notch results in, that aspect at least needs a complete overhaul

Take control of City and bid an obscene amount of money? Hardly new that. Swap City with Chelsea and people have been doing that for a while.

I assumed they had actually bid that much. What else is the point of posting the picture? It's not like people can't just go into the editor and edit in a few hundred million if they are so desperate to cheat.

I sold O'Shea for 8 Million, Fletcher for 20 million and Park for 10 million. All to City.

However the reason why I post here is because I bear great news comrades.

LEGAL VERSION OF CHAMPIONSHIP MANAGER 01/02 IS AVAILABLE. FULLY UPDATED.
