Fifth Ashes Test, Sydney

I think my average is higher than Straus' has been during this series

Maybe we can batter the Windies in the summer the same way the Aussies have done to us. Then it's India to see who's the second best team in test cricket, which seems a bit laughable given what we've been seeing these last couple of months. Having Simon Jones back will make such a mighty difference though, vital bowler for us who can bat a little too. Be nice to think we might go back to trying 4 runs an over pace cricket, seem to have abandoned that approach in Australia.

Bell's just walked, and we're still 39 adrift.

Things are looking real bleak once again, we'll need Colllinggwood and KP to put up a stand like they did at Adelaide if we are to have any hope.

This is it now, either these put a minimum ton together and the tail wags, or we're out of the contest. We need 150 lead to have any chance whatsoever, 200 a more realistic chance, 250 to have a genuine fine chance, and 300 to be heavy favourites.

We'll lead by 50.

Yep, all our hopes, rest here.

These two either run up a seriously defendable total or....well i think we all know what it means if they don't. I hvae little faith in the tail, so, if Freddie and KP can do something it'll be down to whether the other bowlers can get to at least Anderson's level from the first innings.

EDIT: As of 07:03 with roughly a quarter of an hour of play to go, the lead stands at 6.

Freddie's gone, he's walking back to the pavilion and with him goes any chance we had you'd think.

Monty is in as night watchman.

Effectively 11/5 in a 1 innings contest. If Read actually comes to the party with his bat and makes 50, and Pieterson bats not out, theres a slim slim hope, but this game is ending tomorrow when the pitch will still be decent enough to knock off a small to medium (best case scenario) total. Least it means I'll get my normal sleep pattern back a day early, and they'll be no more of this depressing punishment inflicted upon me.

Not looking good is it.

And to think I was joking when I predicted a whitewash.

There still seems to be no agreement about the Warne none dismissal. Seeing the replays again and again in slow motion and infrared there is the possibility of the very slightest of nicks on the gloves as the ball passes. since the umpire is meant to give the benefit of the doubt to the batsman it seems likely to be a good decision in that neither the umpire nor probably even Warne would have detected such a minuscule contact.

From the English viewpoint at least Strauss really was out this time and Gilchrist was given a terrible decision.

Unfortunately, I wasn't joking when I predicted the same thing, if only I'd put money on it!
From the moment Ponting walked out to bat in the first test, you could see the absolute determination in his face that he and his team were going to get revenge for losing the Ashes. :(

glove = out.

goddamnit.

I know but the point was being made that the ball didn't hit the glove and there was no sign of a hotspot anywhere other than the glove. Seeing the replays I'm not so sure the ball didn't hit the glove but ti was so inconclusive I think the Umpire had no other choice but to give him not out and I doubt Warne would have felt the contact even if it did occur, because it would have been so slight.

Gilchrist's dismissal however ...............

As bad as we may be at times, we're nowhere near the depths England have reached.

Your lot are fecking shit, and its time you got used to it.Pakistan, SL, NZ are all better teams than yours.

Sorry to be a bit strong in the language sense there.

I just meant to point out you're woeful.:)

The bowlers have been shite. In contrast the Aussie bowlers have been accurate as feck. Just look at the way they've bowled to Pietersen. . . by pitching the ball up on a good length, and an offstump line, he's struggled and doesn't look the same batsman. Anything on the legs and it's either a six or a four. Just goes to show how limited he is.

Well I wish all our bloody batsmen were as 'limited' as Pieterson

What I can't quite get my head around is that those stupid Aussies were going to drop Clark earlier in the series. He's been to them what Jones was to us last series, and it makes a massive difference.

He should be batting at number 3 or 4, from now on, that's if he really is England's best batsman.

As for Clarke, he's more a kin to Hoggard. Line and length and keeps plugging away. Jones can only bowl with the old ball.

He quite clearly is England's best batsman, and yes he should have been batting at number 4 all along.

Produce a little bit of magic here Pieterson, at least make the Australian batsmen knock something decent off

Well for the day,we are now 0/2, lovely.

Read took a risk, the throw was good, and Monty paid the price getting run out. Read was anxious to get off the mark i suppose but still.

Mahmood just hit a 4 though, always entertaining when the tail enders put on a bit of a show, that at least might happen.

Another wicket down, just 2 to go, and I'm feeling quite a sense of relief actually, the pain will all soon be over. No more staying up all night to watch my nation get absolutely twated.

Scandelous decision not to give Warne his final test wicket, Harmison was out stumped fair and square, went to the TV umpire, and utterly bizarely he gave it not out. Must have a few quid on McGrath taking the final English wicket of the test or something...

Have we lost yet.

I was watching the joke of a performance in the pub until they turned the tv off and chucked us out.

We need Simon Jones back from injury. He is by far our best bowler. And we need Vaughan back. Flintoof is possibly the worst captain ive ever seen play.

I think your right Miley with your points, except that I don't think Flintoffs had a shocker as captain. His bowlers just haven't performed for him at vital times (he has to include himself in there) and the mental strength of the English batsmen has been abysmal. If McGrath is persistantly bowling a good length outside offstump angling away and bouncing over the height of the wicket, DON'T feckING PLAY AT THE BALL.

Anyway all my anger has dissipated now believe it or not! Even gave Mcgrath and Warne a clap as they went off for the last time.

No, but the end is in sight, we've nearly finished withering upon the vine.

5-0. :(

Even with Simon Jones and Vaughn, i doubt they would have been enough to turn he tide in our favour with such widespread ineptitude everywhere else.

That's it, it is done,it is finished.

They and us bear witness to the first 5-0 for 86 years.

class stuff from australia.

can't wait to see their new squad after the world cup without mcgrath, warne, langer, martin.

Well, 2009 we need to do the same to them. English conditions probably won't allow for the whitewash, but I want to absolutely batter the sods! We should have a lot of players at their peak and the younger ones with a bit of experience, I fancy our chances. I think we'll come back and demolish the Windies in the summer actually, we've been poor and Australia have ruthlessly punished us, but that won't be the case in the summer.

We've got the rest of Winter and the Spring before we get to that.

One-day cricket, we have much work to do there too. I heard that Flintoff might be sent back home.

Did you just hear that? A "hard fought series"? Well it was for one side but i wonder about the other.

I have rather written that off as a disaster to be fair!

I hope all the England players feel like shit all the crowd applauding them during the presentations.

Hm, there was some, cause for hope against Pakistan. But that was then you might say.
