Gaming Fifa 2009

I'm gonna buy this game tomorrow just keep on reading how good this game is. How good is the season/career mode I read that you start in the reserves a few pages back.

One thing I do wonder about is a lack of shop option. This game is a lot of fun, single player or online but last time around there was an array of things you could buy in the shop mode as an added incentive to play single player modes.

It's certainly not a big deal but it would have been nice all the same.

Record stands at 8-1 after tonight, 2 more solid wins against someone who I never thought I would beat, played some good football. The more I play this game, the more I like it..

Well done EA.

Heres my review of the 2 football games this year..

and before you ask, I have played the full version of Pro, and I am not just basing it on the demo!

Hope you enjoy!

Fifa 09 vs Pro Evolution Soccer 2009

Every year around October time, 2 rival sets of fans join together in one of the most hotly contested competitions in the world.

What is the years best football game? Fifa, or PES.

This year however, its less of a contest than last year – which was, by no means, a close run thing. Whilst not everyone will always agree on any verdict, even some of the original die hard fan boys have swapped over to the “dark side” in recent years, and this year some people seem to be flocking 1 particular way faster than speedy Gonzalez going downhill, with roller blades on and a rocket attached to his back.

Like all runner up medallists, I shall drag the game up who have underperformed and left their fans unsatisfied (again) up first.

Pro Evolution Soccer 2009

In short; Underwhelming. Extremely underwhelming. Even more underwhelming than last year.

The AI again is non existent, oppositions make robotic runs, and defenders go to block you the same way, every single time. You feel like your playing a game, not playing a game of football. There is no desire to play past a few games, especially in single player, and this is compounded by the frustration of inconsistent ball pace, apparent inconsistent gravity and player animations about as realistic as a Manchester United shirt in Cyprus.

The game play is marginally better than 2008’s offering, but this is nothing to shout about. Konami have simply failed to bring the PES series into next gen gaming, and in such, are losing a huge market. There is a lack of substantial improvement in both graphics and game play though, and especially after last year, most expected a much stronger performance than this. The same little niggly problems are back from last year too – unrealistic kick action, late ball movement, lack of AI intelligence – but they have managed to fix the frame rate issue that annoyed everyone so much for so long.

However, this may be the kick up the ass Konami needs to knuckle down and try to recreate the Pro Evo game that we all loved so much from around Pro Evo 4 times. I hope so anyway, when Fifa and PES were close, it was a lot more fun to have banter with your mates. Now the only ones who stick up for PRO are shareholders or deluded..

Anyway though, onto..

Fifa 09.

Quite simply.. The best football game since Sensible Soccer on the MegaDrive. By a considerable margin too. Since playing this game far too much since release day, I am yet to find any part of the actual game that I can heavily criticise. (I never thought that I would ever say that a few years ago when I was a PES-head). The game is ridiculously realistic, and the sheer amount of attention the developers have put into it have not been missed. Teams play the way they do in real life, not just have the same players.. Individual players are so similar to real life – for example.

Run with Ronaldo - you will either get past your man or get a foul about 9 times out of 10.
Stand their with Vidic – someone will run into you and die.
Torres – Always in the right place for a shot, silky running
Adebayor – Powerful shots, not a lot else.
Lampard – Shoot at the corner flag, get a deflection off of 14 players, and watch the ball trickle past the keeper whilst Andy Gray sings what a marvellous and talented player he really is and how he meant to do that.
Robinho – Constantly sigh and have a go at his team mates for not being good enough.
Terry – Cries whenever he treads on a daisy on the pitch.

There are hundreds of little things that make this game so brilliant, not to mention the highly addictive “Be A Pro” mode, where you take control of a single player for the path of a few seasons, and work your way from Reserves to Club Hero. Plus, there is a 10 vs 10 mode, where you are a single player in a team made up of 9 other people playing as a single players, against another team of 10 doing the same thing. I apologise if that’s as clear as a Stokies STD test, but hopefully you get the picture.

In all serious though, the game is a must buy. Whether you have any friends, or find them all online, the game is a real gem and I cannot recommend it enough.

Final Score

Fifa 09 9(.5) -- 6 Pro Evolution Soccer 2009.

How do you avoid missing sitters ?

I miss around 4-5 clear cut chances a game. :(

Same here.

Need to get used to shooting better - apparently the finesse button helps.

I also have this annoying habit of dominating midfield attacking then counter-attacked against and losing a goal.

I started a new BAP guy, striker. Got very high finishing and speed from the start, so I've scored a few goals simply by outrunning the defenders and slotting it past the keeper. That's all I've managed to do, though. I'm having great problems getting past defenders if I don't get the ball/start the run not much further from the goal than they are.

The camera view doesn't help either, but the alternative, Tele, costs me rating since I can't see where I'm at when the ball is somewhere else. I've tried getting into better positions, but my teammates seem very poor at anticipating runs.

I'm also concerned that it's not going to get any better. I'm still a reserve, so my teammates will get better, but so will the opposition. And I've already got 85-90 rating in shooting, speed, acceleration and dribbling (though that hasn't been any help at all, the opposition player seem to get me either way).

great review muller, agree 100% with what you said about both games!

anyone know what the story is with the rain? i havent played a single game with rain yet on manager mode

Spent pretty much most of this weekend playing fifa 09 round a mates,

this game is pretty much the best thing ever guys. I'm no fifa fanboy but the control you have of the players is out of this world. With the exception of the ridiculous skills, i felt able to manipulate the players down to the finest detail, i could actually play like paul scholes, jinking around and little dragbacks and cruyff turns in the middle of the park, and it flowed, it didnt feel like a set piece at all.

pace is still pretty important, but also it isnt completely exclusive as the best stat. The players play like they do in real life

the control and movement of the players is just so unbelievably good, i still cant get my head around how real it feels and after getting the game on friday i still feel myself saying "wow", "feckin hell"

haha yeah, i did that the first time ronnie did that pass in t'other direction to the way he was looking.

then about five minutes later ibrahimovic got the ball, dragged it back to dodge a slide tackle, then brought it behind his leg, before doing a 360 to beat the other defender. its sick.

i think im going to have to buy a ps3

Good review Muller.

By the way, does anyone else think that the ball hitting the post/crossbar occurs FAR too often?

I usually hit the post 1 or 2 times a game, sometimes 3 or 4, it's becoming a joke. Even when playing 10v10 last night, i remember seeing the ball hit the woodwork on many occasions.

True, but me hitting the bar from 2 yards out should not be attributed to the game...to be fair

46" Sony LCD tv arrived today along with the PS3 :D getting it all installed now

EDIT:

feck me, the telly was 46", not 42"

it has happened a fair bit to me too, last night Berbatov hit the crossbar once and the post twice in one half:wenger:

That review loses all credibility when you try and claim that Pro Evo and FIFA were "close" back in the days of Pro Evo 4. There was nothing close about it. Pro Evo was absolutely miles better than the equivalent FIFA. The gulf between the two games was enormous.

The two games are definitely "close" now - and I can see why some people are changing to the 'dark side' - but it's impossible to take any review seriously from someone who thought they were close, back in the day.

Apologies. What I meant was there was a far more equal Fan Base size, and an equal following. Now its very 1 sided.

Am I the only one that finds the Be A Pro mode boring?

I played about three games, but literally all you do is stand on halfway line, wait for ball, break past defenders, go back to half way line before computer tells you off for bad positioning. It's incredibly dull.

and, having played it a bit more, though it's considerably less shite than Pro Evo 2008, it's still nowhere near Pro Evo at its best. It often degenerates into the usual Fifa crap of just pressing buttons and using the same few routines repeatedly to try and score goals, you still don't have complete control over the passing or movement, and the referees keep booking everyone. Every time the game stops, someone gets booked, or sent off.

I want non shite Pro Evo back :(

Ok, fair enough.

I have no idea about the size of their respective fan-bases but I still think it's a tough call between which of the two games to buy (assuming you're only gonna buy one) Which shows how far FIFA has come. If you had told me, 3 years ago, that I would be torn between the two, in 2008, I wouldn't have believed you.

But I am torn. Although I reckon I'll go with Pro Evo, cause it's still the most playable game of the two. IMHO of course.

when i play be a pro seasons as a created player, it doesn't track the stats at all, the last game ended 4-0 with me getting 3 goals but im still stuck on 0 and my team still only have 1 point. when i looked into the results, it says we lost 1-0. what's that about?

This BAP mode intrigues me, i hdn't heard of it until reading the thread.

So then you FIFA fan boys, what do you think of the latest version?

I'm usually a PES player but i hear FIFA is improving a lot at the minute and that BAP sounds cool.

What do you all think of the match engine in general?

scored a nice goal with Darren Bent before but wasn't signed into EA at the time so couldn't upload it. The keeper went to kick it out his hands but I stood right in front of him, as the ball was falling I volleyed it it the top corner

Come on Pogue, you're hesitating I see now :D .

Just tried 09 for the first time, played 3 matches. Been a long time since I've played FIFA on a console and it was brilliant, going to take some time getting used to again though. Started out by beating some league 2 team 4-1 on pro before I got owend 2-1 and 2-0 against chelsea afterwards :(

The match engine is brilliant though, I love how the passing feels like - really crisp. The physics are even better, I got battered with Evra against Drogba

Well, if Ronaldo was playing be a pro mode he'd be told to hold width on the right. Sometimes you might want to manufacture your own freedom, regardless of what you're supposed to do positionally. I finished top scorer in the league from right back with Fabio, for example.

Pro Evo suffered from exactly the same routines. The difference with this year's fifa is the opponent/cpu can and will change tactics during the game to counter those routines. There are always going to be certain tactics that are more worthwhile with certain teams and players (Through balls to Ronaldo everytime you attack, for example) but at least this year theres something that can restrict it by a margin.

If you can't time your slide tackles, stay on your feet? :smirk:

Get 85-90 in agility and learn to use the right stick as 'quick feet'. With lots of speed, dribbling, ball control and agility, you'll be gliding past everyone like Ronaldo.

This is very disheartening. I can't even beat teams on Pro (normal play). I'm just really struggling to get scoring chances. In earlier FIFA's on PC I used to be very good at using through passes, but I can hardly do any now, unless they're on the wing. And even then my crosses never end with a goal. I've got some excuse in that I got the 360 a couple of days ago, but the control system isn't the whole problem.

It's because the statistics of the 1st team games are recorded, not the reserves.

What method of crossing are you using? I tend to use the right shoulder button on my xbox controller, as it will be a bending cross ala Beckham.

I've only played BAP on Semi-pro as I wanted to be a goal scoring fullback. So I don't know about pro mode... But eh, it wasn't too hard to score lots of goals with Fabio. All I did was ask for the ball a lot and use it wisely, then as the team moved forwards I'd curve my run in behind the defence and press Y asking for a through ball.

A handy thing is, your players dont tend to pass the ball when you're offside. They do now and again, but if you're playing next to Rooney for example, he's not dumb enough to do it when he knows you're offside.
