Nice. I’m really struggling with the game after the latest patch so my tactics are probably very outdated. Need to do a lot of experimenting again. So annoying that as soon as I find something that works for me which takes a lot of trying and failing they patch the stupid game and it’s back to square one.
For someone that hounds constantly (without constant pressure switched on) the fact I don't have to play people who just drop off is fecking brilliant. Loads still try it and just get ripped to pieces.
I got 89 Eriksen first decent pack pull for me this year. Considering how I’ve played in every weekend league except for two (worst finish has been Gold 1) and finished in rank 3 or higher in every div rivals except for one it’s quite unbelievable how my team is only worth around a million coins. Haven’t wasted anything on untradables either except for POTM Lucas which was only 50k and definitely worth it. I’ve also done every SBC that has been in my opinion worth doing, so in total I’ve opened shitloads of packs and gotten nothing except for my red Eriksen. Second best is red Robertson. Most valuable tradable has been Nainggolan at around 75k. Second most valuable was Kroos at around 40k IIRC. The RNG hates me this year.

Ah ok I get you, I haven’t done a weekend league yet. Once RDR2 is over I’m on it. I packed a few recently but none I really wanted. Verrati, terstegan, Matudi and there were some others who are decent players but of no use to me.
To those who play career mode, is anyone experiencing problems with player roles being changed after you pick your team and confirm it? I play 4-3-3 attack and the game keeps switching my RW and and CAM. Its a bit irritating. It doesn't happen when I make no changes to my regular starting 11, only when I rotate/change the lineup before kickoff.

I think this is a bug in all modes, its been there since the start of the game, only happens if you do it during game or in the tactics screen right before kickoff? If so there is still no fix.
I am finally done with FIFA after 25 years of buying the series.
This game is so buggy and bad it´s almost an insult.
The good thing is I am normally in a great mood at home due to not playing it at all.
It was a great ride and so many great times playing it with my friends and many late winners both online and on the couch.

If you change to offense/defense or the ultra versions of either during a match it often makes alterations to your lineup, for example if i go to ultra attack they tend to move Mason Mount to DM, the only thing you can really do in that circumstance is change it back yourself.
If you don't change your approach then im at a loss with an explanation, the only thing i can think of is your RW is a traditional CAM or vice versa? If so the computer may then believe the other CAM is more suited to playing RW (or RW to CAM).

If I have Rashford as a RW it will switch him out with Mason Mount or Lingard to the CAM position for instance. This is before changing tactics during a match. I played a few games last night however and it didn't happen. Hopefully its fixed itself because it did happen also after the last update.
Fifa this year has been very much up and down for me so far, mostly downs to be honest. As some of you know I found a formation/tactic combo a while ago that worked very well for me for a short period of time (4231 with heavy pressure), but for some reason that just stopped working for me. I’ve spent an incredible amount of time trying out different formations and tactics with little success. I played 4-4-1-1 one weekend which worked very well for about half of that weekend league. My best WL finish around that time was Elite 3. New patches really disrupted my mission to find the perfect way for me to play.
Anyway, I know I should’ve done much better than that since last year I usually finished in Elite 1, 2 or 3, never below that really. Though this year it has been mostly gold 1s and a few elite 3s. Last weekend I didn’t really care because I was back to 4411 and I knew that it’s not the ideal formation for me, but I couldn’t find anything else that worked better so I went with that, hoping to reach Gold 1 which was a record low target for me. For some reason it went far beyond my expectations and I finished on 25-5 reaching Elite 2. I was really happy, but at the same time I knew an update was coming out within a few days.
Which it did and then 4411 stopped working for me. The formation was for me heavily reliant on constant pressure which I couldn’t use anymore so it just didn’t work. Back to square one for me, so for the last 4-5 days I’ve been playing some of my worst fifa in years testing out different ways to play. The weekend league went as expected and I finished at Gold 1 this morning.
Then I struck gold. I was playing 352 for the last 10 games or so of the weekend league and it was refreshing, but I hated how deep the midfield dropped. I used the formation because Tass who is one of the best FIFA players in the world had that formation as his #2 best formation in the game which I found strange. So today, after the weekend league, I switched to 3-4-1-2 which is almost the same formation, but with the two midfielders pushed higher up. I’ve won every single game by a margin after making that switch. Around 10 games so far and it’s amazing how well it’s going for me right now. My Div Rivals skill rating is usually around 2300, but dropped to 2200 because as I said I couldn’t find a formation/tactic that worked for me. Now I’m back to 2350ish and I think/hope I’m going to reach division one soon.
TL;DR: I’ve yet again found the perfect formation/tactic. Surprisingly it’s 3-4-1-2 and I recommend everyone to try it out if you have the players for it (I guess most don’t, but if you feel you can do better than with your current setup you should consider buying players for it)
3-4-1-2
Press after possession loss
5 width
8 depth
Balanced attack
6 width
7 players in box
CMs on stay back while attacking, cover center and stay on edge of box for cross (if one of them is more of an attacking midfielder you should put him on balanced attack)
LM/RM on come back on defence, stay wide and get in behind (if they’re good headers you should add get into the box for cross)
CAM on stay forward (support on crosses depends on how good the player is at heading, make sure to put stay on edge if it’s someone like Mahrez)
STs on stay forward and get in behind. Width depends on the player. I’ve got Lukaku who is useless out wide so I have him on stay central, while Martial is on balanced width.
What’s most important here is fast defenders. The depth is so high that without 75+ pace defenders it’s probably not going to work. Having strikers that can score on headers is also quite essential as this formation really exploits wingplay with the RM and LM playing almost as ‘shadow wingers’ and they’re very often unmarked.
The team I’m using is (all on max chemistry)
Courtois
Walker - Ramos - Varane
Swap Antonio - Fabinho - IF Eriksen - IF Robertson
SIF Mahrez
Lukaku - Martial
This setup should work for everyone who likes to dominate games. It adds a lot of opportunities with two strikers, a CAM and wide players who are often unmarked when making runs in behind. I score a lot of crosses, crossing is seriously underrated IMO.
What’s brilliant with this setup is that it’s essentially a five at the back when defending. Make sure to have players with good stamina on LM/RM or good substitutions for them.

I've been using this formation a fair bit in game with CL Alba and SIF Lala as my wingers. It works really well against narrow formations and players who like to park the bus but I've found it gets countered by players using a formation with wingers.

Did you have the wide players on come back on defence? I haven’t struggled against wingers at all. You might have to occationally pull out one of the CBs, but haven’t been any issues with that for me.
Interesting stuff regarding the 3412, I may dabble with it in the future. As of right now I’ve pretty much settled on the 4231, after almost exclusively using the 4321 prior to doing so. So much more solid. Currently rolling with the following:
On paper, the squad looks a little patchy but works well. I have EL Marcos Alonso but he’s woeful, Shaw outplays him despite being 79 rated.
I have 1.2 million in the kitty. The icon situation is disgusting though. I can’t justify buying one as for the same price I could get van Dijk/Sanchez/Kante, or something similar. EA need to step up and sort it, I feel.

Yeah my mate uses this formation and I year him apart time after time with 424.
For me it's the best formation in the game. I'll occasionally get annoyed at my CMs for being miles out of position but you've got so many options in attack that people just can't cope with it.
I actually copied my instructions from some pro on YouTube. They have one for normal play and one for chasing a game or if you know you're blatently the better player.

4231 is generally regarded as the best formation. For some reason I hate it though and can’t play with it at all. Your team looks decent, what are you going to do with the coins? I’d suggest buying a team with Courtois, Varane, Ramos and PL players in the rest of the team.
Yeah 100% if his speed goes up a little bit he'd be perfect for that LM role in your 3412. With 424 I get quite a lot of crosses coming to my back post so it helps to have strong full backs.
Is there a way to turn off that dynamic formation switching?
I appreciate the option being there, but sometimes I just want to use one single formation or try a different one and I can't because it limits me to only 'normal' and if I want to use attacking/ultra/defensive etc then I have to set my team up 5 fecking times.

Yeah I struggled with it at first. I started with a 442 and quickly moved to 433(4). Every time I went attacking it reverted to 442 with players all over the place.
The copy from balanced option should be on the custom tactics screen. It's one of the triggers I believr
Just reached division one in rivals with a skill rating of 2405. I’m very happy with that, but it’s just so annoying to play every single time against teams worth at least 5 million, more often 10-20 million, with my 1M team. Can’t understand how so many people can affort spending
£500-1k on packs.

Tbh, I have a 4m team and I haven't spent a cent. Probably spent the 4m badly too but I did Hazard at 800k, Prime Rio, Hagi and Vieri. So thats almost 4m alone and my son spunked 1m on packs. I've got reasonably lucky with packs though (packing a baby Icon and CL Marcelo) not alot of other big players but lots of 100-200k players. I think while buying packs is a fools game doing every available SBC eventually pays off, you might spend 100k on 7 or 8 of them at be at a loss but eventually you'll hit that big player who'll put you back in the red.
That said I watched some Matt guy spent 150k Fifa points which I believe is about €1500 and pack Bale and a ton of shite. €1500 for Bale and I read somewhere the pro's spend about 2-5k at the start of the game to get a headstart which I'd imagine D1 is full of.

You got incredibly lucky with packing an icon, very few people do that. Also it seems that you’ve been really lucky with the rest of the packs too . Having a 4m team without spending money and/or trading is very rare. I’ve had woeful pack luck this year though. I’ve done so many SBCs, played so many weekend leagues and div rivals and haven’t packed anything noteworthy that’s tradable (the most valuable is literally Nainggolan at 75k, absolutely unbelievable). I made a post on this earlier so not going to repeat myself, but the bottom line is that most people with teams filled with CR7 and several icons have spent incredible amounts of money and it’s a shame how I’m at a disadvantage in every game because of this. It really is pay to win at a high level. I have had hopes of becoming a ‘pro’ or at least reaching top 100 since early FIFA 18. Not sure if I’m going to make it without caving in and spending a thousand pounds.

Oh big time, at the level you want to play at its hugely unfair that you have to play at a disadvantage like that. Imagine League of Legends where you could buy the strongest hero for thousands and if not you couldn't get him. The community would go mental.
With Fifa people accept it because thats just how it has been. It would be interesting if EA ran a weekend league where everyone had the exact same team.

Oh yes that would be amazing. They had some silver players requirements in weekend leagues in FIFA 17 and maybe 18 too IIRC, but they don’t seem to do that anymore. I’d love one weekend league where you could only use silver players. The silver player marked would obviously get messed up, but it’d be more based on skill anyway.

Yesterday was my first time playing division rivals and the ranking games I played, I had some of the worst lag I've ever had. At one point the game stopped and the other guy scored whilst it was in fast forward.
Anyway, what would you say is better to play for the rewards, squad battles or division rivals?

Yeah it's annoying since I stick to normal seasons and like to play with a lot of different teams and experiment with different formations and players a lot.

I’ve never really played squad battles so not sure. I think it depends on your connection. If the lag you’re experiencing persists then I’d obviously go for SB. Where do you live? If you live in the UK then there shouldn’t be any problems with distance to the server so I’d look into your internet connection and see if there’s something wrong. Speedtest.net should be of help. A slightly more advanced solution is to go on a windows pc (or a Mac but not sure how you do it on a mac), type in ‘cmd’ in the search bar, press enter and type in ‘ping utas.fut.ea.com’ and if the ping is less than 50 then it’s all good.
As for rewards, it depends on how well you can do in SB. But I’d assume division rivals will give you better rewards and a much more fun gaming experience if you can sort out the lag issues.

Gone to shit completely. Took 3 weeks off for RDR2 and lost it. My skill rating is now below 1400 when it was close to 2000 in D3 before. I cant build attacks, and cant defend for the life of me. Every game i am 1-0 down within 10 minutes
Just picked up the game and decided to do some career mode before I went online. I like the shooting, feels much more realistic. I'm definitely shaky with the passing, seems to never go to the man I want it to. CPU is ridiculous, they can have spells where they completely pass me off the park and they seem to score every shot they've had. Think I need to do some tactic editing as my players don't seem to be making runs at all, they're actually very similar to their real life United counterparts.
It’s ridiculous how well 3-4-1-2 is going for me. I’ve played 10-15 games in div rivals. Usually I’m winning as much as losing since I’m playing at my skill level, but I’ve only drawn one of those games and won the rest. Gone up around 200 in skill rating and don’t think I’ve reached my peak yet. Something that I didn’t mention in my long post about the formation (because I wasn’t aware of it) is that my wide midfielders have high/high workrates. I think that’s the reason behind the success. You need them to have those workrates in order to make it an effective 5 man defense (which removes the weakness against wide formations) and get them forward to outnumber the opposition. I’m using Swap Antonio on the right, and he’s so often unmarked at the back post. It’s so easy, I’m just playing the ball out wide to my unmarked Robertson and then cross to either Lukaku or Antonio who is usually unmarked.
Played a game just now against a guy that was really good at defending. Could only score one goal, but he couldn’t break through my ‘5 man’ defense, so it ended 1-0.

How do you find it against 4231? The problem I've had is everyone plays that formation and has the 3 CAMs set to stay forward. If I lose the ball with both wingers up the pitch that's when it gets countered.
I've been using the formation since 17, it's definitely my favourite. I did the flashback Alves SBC as he seems perfect for it.
