Fellaini

I like the idea of having a nuisance in our team. He's no Roy Keane or Gary Neville in terms of quality but he's the type of guy who can really piss someone off and get in their face.

First time I've evern seen him used as a benchmark for quality.

Fellaini would be a good signing as Moyes knows him and what he can bring to the table.

He can play a bit of football too.

Skeptical about the money it'd take to bring him here if that is the direction we take, but if we're successful it's not an issue. Key word being if of course...I mean £18m for Carrick in 2006 was ridiculous but he's paid it off and some more.

Despite the all caps in his username, I couldn't agree with ISSYNAZAR more.

Fellaini can be a very useful role player for the reasons described. That said, I can't get all that excited about adding a role player. But if we can be allowed to assume that somehow Roo will remain a United man let's review a likely starting XI in the first CL knockout round:

De Gea
Rafael Rio Vidic Evra
Valencia (or Zaha) Carrick Cleverly Nani
Rooney RvP

Don't get hung up on whether we're playing 442, 4231 or 433 -- please just go with the names for the moment.

This is still a ridiculously strong squad, the weak link clearly being Cleverley in midfield. I get that and I'm all on board for landing Modric or Gundogan if such players are somehow procurable. I doubt they are, so strengthening the depth of the squad with a player like Fellaini isn't such a bad idea. We can develop a few of our younger players such as Januzaj and Lingard during the season and see where that leads us.

But no, Fellaini would not bring us closer to CL glory, but the guy can play a bit of football.

I wonder what Paul Scholes' reaction would be if he was told that we'd like to replace him with Fellaini

If you want to go down that route, he would replace "Paul Scholes 2012-2013", not exactly Paul Scholes at his best. But it doesn't work like that anyway.

I understand people wanting an elite midfielder/player to sign for us, but I don't understand the people who say they don't want Fellaini because he isn't 'world class.' Since when do we only sign world class players? We all know from the last 2 decades that the club is about far more than bringing in ready-made top drawer players. When was the last time we even signed an already world class level player other than van Persie?

I have nothing against Fellaini, but you can't go from wanting Thiago/Fabregas/Modric type players to a big lump like Felliani. If they are going to get him and another midfielder of the T/F/M type then fine. Otherwise it just shouts of panic and buying any midfielder if he suits our style or not. Fellaini would give us another option, but he is not the complete answer.

Youtube highlights can make any player look good. Its just cherry picking the good points, nothing more nothing less.

Rubbish. You can put a few minutes of a reel together for any player over a few years, but a lot of the Fellaini videos are of one season and are long videos which show a lot of great skills.

Its not rubbish, even from one season its just cherry picking the good.

Cherry picking Ronaldo's best moments will look a lot better than Cherry picking Simon Cox's. No? That's the point I make, clearly they are there to show the best bits of a player from the year, but some players have a lot more 'best bits' than others. My point is that it's not a meaningless exercise if you can make a long video showing tons of really great stuff from one season as the majority of players don't actually have that many good things in their locker to do that with.

I dont like his afro.

Correct. I never believed it was plausible that would sign both Fabregas and Ronaldo. In fact, some poster (a good guy, no hard feelings), even challenged me on that very point, resulting in a digression on the meaning of the word "plausible". To recap, I use the word "plausible" to mean "seeming reasonable or probable" and he, apparently, used the word to mean something like theoretically possible, which is not how the word is commonly understood. Yes, it was theoretically possible we could land both Fabregas and Ronaldo, but it really never was anything remotely close to being probable.

I'm afraid we will have to settle for Fellaini.

You're odd Ruud10 and I mean that in the funny way.

Understood and appreciated.

I peddle words for a living, so I'm probably the worst kind of poster to have on here. Perhaps I should restrict myself to matchday commentary ("fantastic pass" and the like), but I like to think that the caf benefits in some tiny way from the perspective of California dude who doesn't read the British tabloids 24/7.

 that's the equivalent of a sideways pass. I appreciate each caftard for what he is, you being from California won't be used by me as a joke or anything like that.

I might be amongst the vast minority here, but I don't even think we'll necessarily sign Fellaini.

vast minority? But, I share your sentiment, I don't think we'll sign him even though till yesterday I thought we would. Now, I think we'll hear we are happy with the squad that won us the league last year.

United have been lacking a player like this for far too long. He might not be the silkiest player in the league but he brings things to the table which we don't have. He'll be a big help in both boxes, he holds the ball up very well and he's basically a fecking nuisance for the opposition. He'll probably deliver a dozen goals from midfield too.

Not the glamour name that we were all hoping for, but he will definitely improve the squad, so why would anyone view this as a bad thing?

Still a Paul Scholes thats our best passer and best at dictating play. This is what we've lost and getting someone who will score from set pieces wont make up for it

Because if we're spending £20m+ on him as has been reported at different points then people want more than someone who's going to do the dirty work and will want a more technically accomplished player for that amount. He's a good player and I wouldn't mind seeing him here, but I'd rather see us prioritise going for a top class midfielder personally and I'm not sure Fellaini is that.

I don't mind Fellaini. Its obvious he isn't the fallback option to Fabregas (whom we may try for again next year) or someone of that ilk, but rather to complement that type of player. His buyout clause is supposedely 23m, which I think is fair. I'd probably rate him at 18m, but the transfer market is currently so inflated, 23m seems like a bargain.

By the way, did his buyout clause expire last week (as reported by metro.co.uk) or does it expire on 14th august, as reported elsewhere????

no one knows and it doesnt matter anyway because I cant see anyone paying anymore than his alleged £23m clause

Could it be that there is a clause saying Moyes can't buy off his former club for 12 months? Would we ever find out about that if there was?

Wouldn't Moyes know that? Surely we wouldn't have bid for Baines if so.

Maybe the bid for Baines was a smokescreen for the Fellaini deal which was a smokescreen for the new contract for Bebe?

Or maybe just a kick up the ass, quite a large one, of Ando???

Surely not, but an ancillary benefit of all the Fellaini speculation could just well be an inspired Ando. Imagine that, an inspired Ando.

*Insert joke about him being inspired whenever he's near a Burger King*

That can't happen because Moyes ran out his contract at Everton, he was a free agent so we would not have had to sign anything with Everton

Most places I've seen said 14th or 15th and Metro seems to be about as reliable as Tribal Football was.

Probably along the likes of "Oh, that bloke that dominated us last season as well as several other top clubs in the league? Alright then."
By dominate I assume you mean won loads of headers while playing as a forward against a midfielder in central defence. Not sure that kind of dominance will help our midfield problems.

Could someone is this thread please give their opinion on how Fellaini will fit in or fail to fit in at Utd tactically with some stats thrown it? 90 pages and not seen it once.

I'm not sure why Cleverley gets brought in for comparison. Two totally different players in my view. Cleverley shits on Fellaini for creativity / vision / passing ability, but Fellaini brings a whole load of other attributes that aren't tom's game.

Fellaini is an option that we severely lack. I understand that people are against the possibility of him being our only summer signing when it's obvious what sort of player we are most desperate for, but signing him would be a great addition, and on top of someone else would be perfect.
