Fellaini

That's why you're not managing a football club.

get back in the racing thread and give us some tips,

Well, the "compared to some of our own fans" part of your post sort of implied that unlike a significant portion of our fans, pete talks regarding De Gea; he seems to rate him so my conclusion was you believe that a lot of our fans don't. And in the case of De Gea, it's a very tiny, barely noticeable minority who might not rate him here and they can be safely ignored.

But if you didn't imply that... well then this utterly unnecessary and over-complicated explanation was even more unnecessary than otherwise.
I wasn't specifically talking about de Gea, it was a general point.

I agree with your last point

Does anyone think we'd sign Fellaini if Moyes wasn't our manager? Fellaini isn't as terrible as some people suggest but I don't think he's done enough to suggest he can perform at our level either. If we do sign him it'll be because of the relationship he already has with Moyes, not because he's an outstanding candidate to improve our midfield. Plus we will certainly have to overpay for him.

Not good enough for where we want to be. There is no hope we would compete with midfields like Bayern, Barca, Real or Dortmund. For £22m or whatever, it seems overpriced for a player who might do a job in the league but would put us no closer to closing a pretty big gap between us and the best teams in Europe. If people are happy to make it to the quarters and hope for the best after that then fair enough, but we should be challenging every year and signings like Fellaini aren't going to help us do that. We need to spend big on a geniuine world class midfielder or two. The rest of the team is capable, and we don't have too spend to much on strengthening the squad so we should go all out for players that will take us to level of the top teams in Europe.

You have too much sense.

This is a bit weird (and replayed on Arse forums). Most of the people who I think know anything about football say 'feck off bollox - it's a joke' but there is a strong 'we need muscle' contingent'.

Actually he probably would help us close the gap if we signed another midfielder and played him in a three. Dortmund have Bender, Kehl. Real have Khedira. Only Barcelona and Bayern have midfields with only world class starters. Now Felaini is not as good as some of these and better than others but buying world class players is not always an option.

I'm sure United want midfielders to compete with the best teams in Europe. I'm sure wanting to buy Fabregas is showing that very intent. However, it's not always possible to buy the best players from direct rivals, and there are very few really world class players available who are not already playing for our rivals.

Agreed.

But what United haven't done well enough (in central midfield) is to spot the players before they've become big stars.

If Moyes wants to buy Fellaini then I'm sure he thinks he's good enough to play for United. I'm positive he will not buy for the sake of buying a player and jeopardise his reputation.

Possibly. Another school of thought is they were banking on the likes of Anderson, Cleverley, and Pogba to be the stars of the future. Fletchers loss has also been unfortunate.

Yeah, and to be fair, Anderson and Cleverley could still come good. It's our own fault we lost Pogba, mind.

Overall, I'm all for banking on younger players coming good, but we've still probably been one established midfielder short for years. Another Carrickesque player, if you will.

The reason he hasn't bought Fellaini is that he knows he isn't top banana. He may do it as a fallback.

Agree with this and that's why there would be no excuse if we don't sign a CM this summer. There are plenty of good prospects about, sooner or later you have to take an educated punt and hope that that player can make the step up to the next level.

What and avoid the logical conversation going on? You're like one of those Beckett characters in an urn, repeating the same words that they clearly don't believe.

We've been awfully unfortunate in midfield. Hargreaves, Fletcher, Anderson, even Cleverley to an extent - all cases of injury or illness really harming, even destroying, careers. But it is what it is. Hargreaves has been gone for a while, Fletcher too for the most part, and by now I don't think many believe in Anderson. I'm sure we always look for players in every position. Why we haven't brought in even one midfielders since 2007 is beyond me. I guess it was a combination of Fergie's trust in the men he had and his idea that only the very best (Sneijder, for instance) can be an improvement on that.

It brought us to a very delicate situation because we absolutely have to sign someone this summer. But it's even more complicated with a new manager, who until 2-3 months ago probably wasn't even looking for players of the level and especially cost level which we can bring in. So he goes for the tried and tested in Fabregas and may do that in Fellaini, simply because he hasn't had time to follow players who he doesn't already know, especially from the PL.

I've said it before, but I'll say it again.

Fellaini is very underrated on this forum. I really do think he would be great for us.

Mind you, I doubt we're after him as surely we would have got him in by now if that was the case?

We dont need quantity in midfield - we need pure quality to be about comparable with the other top teams in midfield. Fellaini I dont count as such a player with world class potential

Unless he's an option but not our first or second choice. I doubt there's another Thiago or Fabregas out there. Our next choice will probably be a player of different style.

Someone should Photoshop that - Waiting For Fabregas.
I was thinking more of the Endgame:

Characters
  • Moyes - unable to stand and blind
  • Woodward - servant of Moyes; unable to sit.
  • Bollox - Woodward''s father; has no legs and lives in a dustbin.
  • Niall - Moyes' mother; has no legs and lives in a dustbin next to Golden Blunder.
Feel free to assign caf players...

It's not just pace it's mobility - the cnut can't run. He's the same level as N'Zonzi as a CM if you want a big bloke who can't pass.

You are becoming a fecking parody of yourself man.

Club career[edit]

Early career[edit]

Born in Etterbeek, Brussels, Fellaini began playing football at the age of 8 for Anderlecht. Fellaini's first love was track, with the 10,000 metresbeing his preferred event.[3] As a child he would run to school while his classmates used to make their daily journey by bus or car.[4] However, Fellaini's father, Abdellatif who was a professional footballer himself guided his son towards football.[3] In his first season at Anderlecht's Academy, he scored 26 goals and in his second he scored 37. He was at Anderlecht's academy until the age of 10 when he joined Mons, due to his father getting a new job in the city.[3] Three years later, he joined R. Francs Borains before leaving the club when he signed for Sporting Charleroi. At the age of 17, he signed his first permanent contract with Standard Liège. Between 2006 and 2008, he made 84 appearances for the club, scoring 11 times.[5] He is known for his heading ability and stamina, which made him one of the best box-to-box midfielders in the Belgian First Division and resulted in him winning the Ebony Shoe in 2008,[6] an award given to the best player of the season of African descent.

But yeah, he can't run and isn't mobile. :wenger:

I can't wait till he ruins your lot playing for us.

Sign him up. sign him up, sign him up. It would be clear a statement that Moyes is going to do the Evertonizalisation job on Man Utd.

For those of you that watch bayern regularly, how would you compare luis gustavo to fellaini? Is it wrong to say He could play Both with and in place of carrick?

Apologies if this has been posted. You can see that Fellaini can't pass is only a myth. He's not great at passing, but neither Vidal is.

People who say that he cannot run are surely on WUM.

He could. Gustavo is a better DM without any of the attacking abilities Fellaini has shown this season as a second striker.

Mate, a lot of them are on the WUM but the majority of them don't have a clue what they are talking about. Antone who says he's slow or not mobile should be thread banned for crimes against the internet.

Well obviously Fabregas would be 1st option and Thiago would have been good value at the price, but really I think we are more in need of a someone who is willing to get stuck in and add a bit of bite to the midfield

Your squad is lacking the same - although I suppose bucktooth Suarez can give you the bite :smirk:

Likely. I don't have the stats but I would bet that he is one of the players who cover most distance for Everton. And saying that he's slow is ridiculous, he's faster than Carrick for a start.

The problem is that during past few years (with all Barcelona thing) redcafe has become a place when people like so much players who are gifted technically, and if we're linked with a player who isn't fancy enough, he is the by default a shit player. And Moyes being the manager doesn't help the situation, I am sure that a lot of these people who are saying that he's shit wouldn't say so if Fergie was still in charge. I remember a lot of people wanting him to come here after he single handed destroyed us both in 2011-2012 and in last season.
