We may as well resign ourselves to the prospect of Fellaini becoming a United man. And if it does happen, we'd be better off looking at the glass half full rather than half empty. True, we will have missed out on Thiago and Fabregas (and Modric too, if he ever was a realistic target), but Fellaini does check some of the boxes that need to get checked.
The Hairy One won't be a disappointment in the way that Ando has been. He'll give us a good bit of fight in midfield and will be good for the occasional goal. Cleverley and Januzaj would have a clearer path to seizing whatever chances Moyes will give them.
Okay, this is an attempt to sugarcoat what is otherwise a disturbing reality -- our inability to attract a truly "world class" central midfielder -- but the reality is that 1) we're competing against clubs that have a lot more cash than United 2) generally better cities to live in and 3) we have a brand new manager and there are reasonable questions about how he will work out.
Point 3 may be the most important point. I'd be more than happy to bring in decent players like Fellaini and hold onto the prem trophy, thus answering questions about DM's fitness to serve as Fergie's successor. And then go hunting for the big game next summer.
