Fellaini (on his way) out? | Duncan Castles: Fellaini agrees new two year deal

Despite the meltdown in here, this is good news. Frees up funds for other positions, and Fellaini does have a role to play in specific games and situations. He will probably play less than last year considering we have also bought Fred.

I wasn't really looking forward to the new season anyway. At least I won't get stressed about United next season as it will be much the same as the last.

It will be tough not to get angry when Fellaini starts important games (like the Sevilla one) as a central midfielder where he has been invariably terrible throughout his time here but that's life.

In the absence of me being able to make one can someone please create a thread about how we are heading into yet another new season (feels like a decade) with the likes of Fellaini, Jones, Darmian, Blind, Shaw all part of our squad. They have let us down time and again. Or bump any thread from the last 3-5 years titled 'deadwood'.

The guy has been injured most of the season and wasn't a starter when fit or a decisive bench player but apparently he is important. Let's be serious, he is useless not because he is Fellaini but because he doesn't provide much and he barely plays.

Club that gonna sell Martial and extend Fellaini contract should fail. For the football.

Oh feck off, can we not just please move on?! :(

I’m still hoping he’ll leave as if it were true, surely the club would have announced something by now instead of waiting until his current contract runs out.

Bad news was hoping for one more midfield signing.

Looks like we gonna be served up more mediocrity again this season , we so desperately need to ship out dead wood.

I saw something from Samuel Luckhurst that said United have withdraw their offer and he's free to leave
He said something like "United should announce that they have withdrawn their offer and he is free to leave". People need to stop making things up or learn to read properly.

Edit: not necessarily you, but whoever wrote that.

The idea we would have to spend massive money to replace Fellaini is nonsense. We literally wouldn't need to spend anything, if we are switching from 4-2-3-1 to 4-3-3 then the best way to use Lingard will be as one of the central attacking midfielders, like how he plays for England. Pogba, Matic, Fred, Lingard, Herrera and then one younger player from Pereira/McTominay is ample options.

While I agree with you, Mourinho doesn't. He specifically said that we would have to buy another midfielder if Fellaini were to leave. The big oaf is important to him, that's the problem.

I can see both the negatives and positives of him staying. Negatives...we all know them.

The positives...

Spend the cash we had earmarked for a CM to another area of the pitch.
Potentially buy an upcoming, cheaper CM, who will have time to bed in, rather spending lots of money on a 'Superstar', who takes time to bed in.
Players like McTomminay will get more of a chance, as more often than not, Fellaini will be used to push up top for plan B.

Bit harsh mate, chill out.

Agreed. I'd be upset with Fellaini staying if there was a realistic chance that Milinkovic-Savic was waiting to take his place, but it doesn't look like that transfer was ever going to happen anyway.

Going by the reports, we fully expected him to leave after months of refusing our contract offers and flogging himself around Europe as a free transfer. It seems that nobody else has made him an offer, so now he'll be taking up our original one. He might only have come to this 'decision' in the last few days.

Nainggollan moved to Inter for 21m, Golovin is said to be valued at 20-25m, Emre Can moved for a free, Coric move to Roma for 6m. All of which are better players then frigging Fellaini.

We don't need to break the bank every time we need to buy a player. We've hired some of the most rated scouts in the world. Let them do their job

This is bullshit. Its decisions like this that make me doubt Mourinho and the future of this club.

really?

I disagree with you, mostly on the 'Fellaini haters bit' - can't stand that immaturity that if you don't deem a player to be technically good enough you are a hater - also those first two seasons Herrera performed generally well but wasn't played by Van Gaal in many of the games IMO

last season for me our best football came in the games where Matic - Herrera - Pogba formed a midfield 3. Admittedly Herrera was shit for the first half of the season but what did Fellaini contribute - sure he can grab the odd goal but what do we sacrifice in terms of style of play

out of interest, if you are someone who thinks that Fellaini should be in the team ahead of Herrera what exactly do you think he contributes to that midfield? Or do you want us to play the long ball style that Mourinho employed to great effect in that game against Sevilla where Fellaini started ahead of Pogba
I've shown that there is nothing between them. You can blame Van Gaal all you want but in his last season here, Herrera was simply poor. In the game that would have secured us 4th had we won, him and Schneiderlin put in a shocker of a perfomance as we lost to West Ham.Fellaini meanwhile had scored in the QF and SF helping is win our first post SAF trophy .

I have mentioned it before. Neither Fellaini or Herrera should be starters if we have any proper ambition. Both are good squad players though .

What does Fellaini offer? Consistent goal threat and actually offers us a lot of energy in midfield and usually is amongst the top players in terms of distance covered. He also offers us aerial ability especially when it comes to our own box. That helps especially when we don't have Smalling as most our defenders are at times limited in the air . It's a stupid fallacy that all he offers is a route 1 option.

And if you are going to pick one Sevilla game where Fellaini didn't work out, you can do plenty for Herrera too. And that is the point.

What’s the point of Fellaini again?

He’s terrible at things a normal midfielder should be good at and can’t win headers properly without using his elbows and fouling others.

We could replace him with a mop and the only difference they’ll have is that the mop isn’t getting us called for stupid fouls in dangerous positions.

Literally every minute that he plays is a minute of game time that’s he’s robbing from the younger players like McTominay and Peirara should be getting.

fecking disgusting

We should have gotten rid not given him a bumper contract.

100k+ a week for a squad player who might score 3 headed goals a season off the bench.

I am close to being done with this club, nothing about this team is what I fell in love with.

Potentially selling Martial, begging Fellaini to stay.

I knew this would happen though, simply because nobody else wants him enough. Sure, lots of teams would take him on a free for a reasonable salary. But nobody wants him enough to pay him what he feels he's worth.

Joke. Absolute sick joke.

Unlike many on here, I don't dislike Fellaini. He puts in effort and passion. It's just unfortunate that every time I watch him try to play a simple trap and pass I am reminded of a cow on roller skates.

It's nothing strange that the two parties comes to agreement. Fellaini main option is to renew (but he wants 2 yrs guarantee at least) but United seems doesn't want to. However, looking at the targets that we acquired and links with, it seems that we want to use majority of our budgets to purchase a CB, RW/Back up Striker, and LB (not sure now, it's cooled down.

Fellaini has his use and he's basically a useful squad member that already familia with club and JM tactics. I understand the frustration of many of us here that wants to see him gone or outright hate him, but he's good when your Plan A doesn't work (that'll be Matic, Pogba, Fred) and want to close down the lead or use plan B.

We have to remember that you won't see him starting majorities of the games, he help save our budgets, won't complain much about squad roles, give his all for the club/JM. It really just that the benefits outweigh the disadvantage of him leaving at this point in time.

Maybe you could support City instead? They have some top players who are worthy of the salary, nothing like Fellaini.
