Fellaini (on his way) out? | Duncan Castles: Fellaini agrees new two year deal

People are underestimating how effective Fellaini can be as a plan B. Even though, Fellaini can singlehandedly destroy as form of beautiful football, he can also be an important strategic piece for any manager who needs to disrupt a team defense.

They're not underestimating him at all. He's just not an effective plan B. In 5 years at the club he has one goal and one assist coming off the bench late in games we are chasing. If he was very effective in those situations he would surely have more goals/assists no?

As a DM you also need to be able to either read the game very well in order to anticipate the threat or be exceptionally mobile in order to snuff it out whilst it's occurring. Fellaini has neither qualities.

Yep definitely i agree, Fellaini at DM is the stuff of nightmares.

He isn't. He is useful as a plan B alright. But it does not happen so often. He usually comes off the bench and nothing much happens. He doesn't dramatically turn around anything. He still loses possession and makes ridiculous passes and he also loses some areal duels.

Overall, his average play negates his occasional resourcefulness.

It never ceases to amaze me how many top teams manage to make do without an important strategic plan B like Fellaini.

Please let this happen. The reactions from ArsenalFanTV will be worth it.

While we can be grateful for his goals and it is not his fault, he completely reflects everything that went wrong with Utd post Ferguson.

I think someone told the board that the team misses Giroud's headers and they decided Fellaini it is then

Its everywhere, theres something in this,

Please please please be true.

I have a few Arsenal supporting friends who think Fellaini is decent and mistreated by United supporters but im sure they'd lose their shit if he actually signed for them! I hope it happens

Once they realise they've signed a player who can't pass, can't tackle, can't shoot, and is slow as feck they'll be of a different opinion I'm sure.

With Fellaini in the side, they are going to start playing the Arsenal way again.

Top teams dont need a “ long ball” option or a plan B that includes hoofing it upto him hoping he does something with 10mins to go.

He’s a relic of the small minded Moyes era and probably a very likeable guy so he’s been kept this long. I personally cant wait to see him go.

Think the Arsenal manager wanted him at PSG before he left as well so I heard, so I can understand him wanting him at Arsenal. Not a bad signing for Arsenal on a free

In 1999?

One of them was a corner and the third goal if i remember correctly was a goal kick. That's hardly hoofball mate.

You could argue the first, but we won the ball high up on the left-hand side of their area from a long kick from Schmeichel, or a free-kick can't remember as i've slept since, Yorke or Cole won a corner from it which Keane scored from, the second was well crafted but started with a 60+ yard hopeful ball from Neville down the line which was flicked on, the third Schmeichel pumped it as far as he could, the defender dropped a bollock just outside the area, and the rest is history as they say, and beautiful history it was, ahhh happy days

I'll settle for two, but it still makes the point

This would just be hilarious. Fellaini's impact is over-rated nowadays, I wouldn't be afraid of facing him. The Fellaini who was terrorising every defence he came up against for Everton is in the past.

He'll be a cnut to play against which is why I was hoping he would go to Milan. Still, he's the last person I would expect Wenger to sign, so maybe its the step in the right direction for them.

Apparently Norwood has unfollowed him on Twitter...can someone confirm?

That was a long time ago mate, how often did you watch Standard in those days?

How many games do you need to see if a goalkeeper catches the ball cleanly, and dominates his area, or a fullback tackles cleanly and is quick in recovery, or a winger has more than one trick, or......

Anyhow, more than enough, they were gaining a reputation across Europe at the time and they were often the 'live' game on Eurosport on European nights, plus saw him in 4 or 5 matches at the European u21 championship in Holland, so at least
10 matches.

These days he doesn't look a natural in the position at all, he struggles there. For me he's just not suited to it, doesn't have the positional discipline or the timing to make tackles without fouling a lot. And in around the box he is a penalty waiting to happen.

How many times has he played there ? and i'm not surprised he's struggled(if he did)with constant chopping and changing alongside and behind him

I reckon you would do well to find 20 United fans on here who think Fellaini is even capable of playing as a DM competently never mind thinking he excels there.

If they've only seen him at United, yeah probably right, a handful would do

As for what Fellaini thinking it is his best position, it's largely irrelevant. Most players don't have a clue what their best position is.

Yet your average footie fan who would probably cry if a football bounced towards them does

So he wants to leave us because we won't pay enough, and somehow Arsenal can find the money? Seems unlikely, even on a free.
Would be funny to see a team with their last 20 years style of play go for a lump it up approach.

As long as he then doesn't wheel out a 4-4 v Everton type performance v us!

Checked arsenal mania which I usually consider to be quite quiet... But the Fellaini-thread has 16 pages only today

That statistic must be misleading. From, what I have seen, Fellaini has been very effective whenever we use him as a target man; especially when we employ hoof ball tactics towards him.

That is strange, I knew about his lack of footballing ability, but I did not know as a plan b, whenever we need a target man upfront, he is as useless as well. Feck me, I don’t understand why we continue to use an approach that doesn’t work!!

If your point is that the 1999 Treble winning side were long ball merchants, then i reckon you need to rethink it mate.

Not suggesting that at all, far from it, but even our most successful sides '68, '94, '99 and '08 were quite prepared to go route one and often before we tried to play our normal game but there wasn't the snobbery around amongst the fanbase then as there is now about playing the United way, and only the United way.

Well maybe i'm not as good at judging talent. But i would need more than 10 games to make my mind up about whether or not a young player is good enough for a top side. Never mind making a determination about what their best position will be and sticking to that opinion 10 years later despite them not playing much there.

How many times has he played there ? and i'm not surprised he's struggled(if he did)with constant chopping and changing alongside and behind him

There's a reason he's not getting a run there though mate. A succession of managers are not purposely playing a world class DM out of position, for reasons unknown. If he was good there Mourinho wouldn't have bought Matic, Van Gaal wouldn't have bought Schneiderlin. They would have played him there, at least regularly if not every game.

If they've only seen him at United, yeah probably right, a handful would do

Most United fans will have watched him on and off for 10 years, he joined Everton in 2008. They will have all watched him regularly for United for the last 5 years. 150+ games, i think it's safe to say the vast majority of United fans will have seen enough of him to form an opinion on his strengths and which position they think he's best in. They won't all be right, we all have our own opinion but it will be an informed opinion.

Yet your average footie fan who would probably cry if a football bounced towards them does

Yeah like you :p

Good thing he'll be warmly received and universally loved there, and won't have the backlash with the fans he had here.
