Fellaini “foul” on Mané in our box

If you switch the players around, with Mane in the Fellaini role and vice versa, you can guarantee the pundits would still be saying it should have been a penalty.

Just watched it twice and its 50/50 at best. A coming together, so the ref got it right imo

I found this one of the most frustrating aspects of the game. It was like Sky we're doing all they could to find a pen for Liverpool.

Fellaini was in front of the attacker with eyes on the ball and Mane came into him from behind. I mean it was a coming together but if anything a foul on Fellaini.

Seemed like Sky had a huge agenda. The only one that could be a pen was the handball.

In fairness to Carragher I thought he gave a good analysis of the game

The clearest indication of if something should have been a penalty or not, is would it have been given aginst them at their ground.

In this case there isnt a cat in two fecks chance that we would have got a penalty if that had happened at Klanfield, so the debate is closed.

Watching this again on MOTD. Pundits are convinced it’s a pen. Am I the only one who thinks that the reverse view shows Fellaini on his way to win the ball cleanly when Mané sticks his right leg out and blatantly trips him?

@GifLord ?
It was a penalty in my view, but I think the Valencia handball was probably more blatant...He was like 10 odd yards away from the ball,he had time to react but he stuck his hand out.But Fellainis just so clumsy in the box, that could have easily been a penalty...

It was never a penalty. Mane makes first contact on Fellaini from behind in a deliberate attempt to 'win' the foul.

In real time, I was screaming for a foul on Fellaini. Having watched it again, it's still a foul on Fellaini and I have no idea why Poulsen was waving the penalty away.

The handball would have been a little harsh - albeit I've only seen it once.

However, had Salah gone down when Young was pulling him, he may have won the penalty.

Fellaini was the one ‘in possession of the space’ and was favourite to get to the ball. Him moving across Mane and their legs tangling does not make a penalty.

I’m sorry but not having it for a second. If you go through every incident and coming together in the box and slow it down you would be coming to the conclusion that there should have been 5 pens in every game!

Mark Schwarzer and Kammy both say it's a penalty on Goals on Sunday :wenger:

Mane was the one that fouled Fellaini! I think some of these pundits need to start wearing glasses.

I didn't think it was a penalty at all.

It's definitely not just bias either as I thought Salah could have had a penalty when Young grabbed him.

I agree, if it was in the other box those saying it's a penalty for Mane now would most likely say it would be a penalty for Fellani with everything else being the same.

Credit to the ref though, loads of refs would have given it simply because Fellani moves around clumsily and there was contact. (Clumsily in general not this particular scene).

Mane manufactured the contact. Seen them given, but if you are Fellaini, you cant do anything if a guy puts his leg across and you stumble over it. It was a foul from Mane on Fellaini trying to get a pen.

that's what I saw the first time and no reason to change my mind. mane was "doing a Pires"

They both went for the ball.
Neither reached it.
Both tripped up over one another.
Both seemed to be happy to go to ground (too easily).
Mane was looking for a pen - he dived.

Not a penalty - ref got it right.

If the challenge was at the other end we'd be screaming for a penalty for United - I get why the scousers are pissed off with that one.

Just another example of how fecking embarrassing Fellaini is - joke of a player.
on the contrary: we were being outmuscled in the second half until Fellaini came on. he didn't miss a single defensive header

Firstly, I would not be screaming for a pen, if it was for us.

Fellaini did well when he came on. He did exactly what Jose asked. He broke up play and made a nuisance of himself for the LFC players.
Once he came on, we effectively shut down the game.

Did you watch the game?

When watching it live on tv, and the replays, i wasn't able to figure out who fouled who.
Both put a foot out, they hit eachother, both fell.
Not a penalty, in my opinion.

The kind of decision that would have been a nightmare if there was VAR. personally I think Mané put his foot in front of Fellaini for sole purpose of trying to get a pen and ref got it correct but I imagine a lot of refs would have given the penalty.

Fellaini got himself between Mane and the ball, Mane tripped him. Clear foul on Fellaini I thought

It was more like a dive to me. But then Alli would be given a penalty.

p.s. Valencia's handball was more of a penalty claim threat to me.

Contender for worst post in 2018 and we're still in March.

Fellaini is such a clumsy player, even when he’s getting fouled it looks like he’s the one fouling.

The more I saw it the more I'm sure there's no penalty in it. 50/50 ball with both putting their legs. If that was in the center of the pitch no one would even care about it not being called for a foul.

It’s a real mixed bag. I have real doubts that most refs would give that.

Tough one. I’d say it’s probably not a penalty but we got lucky it wasn’t given (particularly as most pundits seem to think it was).

I also wouldn’t give either the handball or the Young one as penalties but they fall into the “seen them given” category.

The one that was absolutely stonewall was the Bailly one on Milner. Brilliant player though he is, he needs to curb the aggression levels in those sort of situations. Totally unnecessary.

Still, good to get a bit of luck in a big match for once!

Just because there's contact doesn't mean the foul should automatically go in favour of the attacker. Mane sticks his right leg out in front of Fellaini with no attempt to play the ball, so he initiates the contact - no pen.
Yep completely agree. I was working yesterday and was trying to multi-task watching the game, but I saw Valencia with what looked like a handball, although I haven’t seen any replays, should it have been a penalty?

Couldn't give 2 shits if it should have been a pen or not. Personally, I love it when there's loads of controversy in a United win over Liverpool. Love it when they're complaining about being hard done by.

Suck a dick Liverpool

Are all the pundits really saying this was a pen? I haven't seen MOTD or goals on Sunday, just the post game analysis.

Carragher didn't think it was a pen, and I think even Souness begrudgingly said it wasn't.

I don't know why they're making something out of this, I can only imagine it's pool fans trying to make excuses.

They lost the have because they couldn't break us down or handle our counter attacks in the first half.

Other than Rashfords goals the best chance of the game was Matas. VVDs header was the closest they came all game.

I think it's a six of one, half a dozen of the other situation. Can see both sides of the argument but it isn't clear-cut by any stretch of the imagination, thus the referee made the right decision.

I'm sure Jose has a lot of sympathy for Liverpool after that semi v Chelsea in 2005

It's absolutely bizarre this has gotten so much talk. It wasn't even contentious. If Fellaini actually tackled Mane maybe. But he didn't.
