Fellaini “foul” on Mané in our box

Glad I'm not the only one who just sees 2 players coming together. The level of conviction among the pundits is typically exaggerated.

Reading through this, you'd swear it was clear as day and there was no chance this could have been interpreted as a Fellaini foul on mane. I've watched it a few times and the more I watch it the more I think we were lucky no pen was given.

I'm not saying it is nailed on 100% pen, but we've seen pens given for less. If it was up the other end, I'd be screaming for a pen for us.

More of a coming together I agree, but I viewed it as fellaini moving his body to shield the ball, but a little slow hence making more contact with Mane than he should have. Mane does also make contact, so probably a right decision for no pen or no foul against fellaini.

Lucky it wasn't given in this age of no contact.

It would have been madness. You are allowed to shield the ball. Fellaini was closer to the ball, Mane came from behind. The contact was Mane’s leg blocking/tripping Fellainis forward moving leg. It was a nailed on free kick for Fellaini.

Not being funny here ( I havent seen it by the way and only seen parts of the game ) but for fecksake it wasn't given so let's all move on. Those Spurs penalty debates against us went on for far too long. He turned his back whilst thingys leg was in motion in his direction so he lost balance and his momentum took him down. It most probably will turn into a debate about VAR too. If it wasn't given then for the sake of simplicity it wasn't a pen.

We never hear the end of it if a decision ever goes our way. People still talk about that penalty we won against Spurs in 2009, even though it wasn’t that bad of a decision.

I thought it was a foul on Fellaini or deliberate attempt to deceive the ref by Mané. Nobody runs splaying their legs out wildly to the side unless they're deliberately trying to be tripped.

Young holding back Salah was way more of a pen

Only it wasn't nailed on because nothing was given.

Its just my interpretation anyway, I think it could have been given right or wrong because there was contact and it did look clumsy from fellaini.

What actually happened was right for me, but in this day and age where minimal contact is a definite freekick or pen, I'd consider that fortunate is all

I don’t understand why this is even a discussion. So Mane should get a pen because he puts his foot in front of a running Fellaini when neither of them are in control of the ball?

There's no way it was a penalty, Mane effectively fouled Fellaini... however, that doesn't mean we didn't get a slice of luck in a penalty not being given. Rules don't apply to the narrative.

In a world were good defending is anti-football, and winning games can be done on a regular basis by playing awful football... I'm starting to wonder what sport we're all watching.

I'll say it

From the front... players faces on camera... it looks like Mane fouls Fellaini from behind

But on the reverse angle (and this is most likely what the ref saw) it looks like Fellaini is in the process of bodychecking Mane, and you can see why all the shouts for a penalty.

The ultimate 50/50 call... and it went in our favor... but reverse things and we'd be furious that this call denied us an equalizer at Anfield.

Fellaini's decisiveness won the decision in his favor. If he would hesitate fraction of a second, no doubt - a clear penalty or Mane would be fast enough to score from there.

Klopp should mention this now to replace the Valencia offside stuff he used last year.

I think it was more a case of Mane fouling Fellaini than the other way around. Not a pen for me.
