FC Girondins de Bordeaux folded due to financial issues

Incidentally, that was their first match back in their stadium. They've been renting the municipality owned stadium since it was built but they haven't been paying the rent or even the match day operating costs so they got thrown out at the start of the season.

They're back in now with the council effectively writing off the debt. They still have to come up with the matchday costs though. They're being charged about €50k/match to play there. That's with a capacity restriction of 12k (the stadium actually holds about 40k)

They're still bankrupt, but for the moment at least they're in business.

If you've got an Atlantic subscription there's a nice summary of what's been going on here:

I can respect that. Some players aren't ready to retire, just because the big leagues don't want them anymore. It doesn't have to be about money.

Teddy Sheringham did something similar (not comparing his career heights to Carroll!). When he left United he took a series of jobs going steadily down the pyramid, to keep playing at a serious level, just because he enjoyed his work.

I hope it works out for him and Bordeaux.

Andy Carroll looks born to play in lower leagues of French football
when you see him scoring headers for fun there it makes you stop for a moment and think maybe brexit can work.

Well I'm enjoying Andy Carroll playing for Bordeaux far more than I expected. It's a beautiful city and I'm sure there's a huge sense of unity from the fans & players given what's gone on with the club.

This will be Scandi Carroll in Vanarama National League North next season.

Fair play to him.
Doesn’t have to do it but just wants to play.
Is obviously still a cut above everyone else at that level and I think it’s pretty heartwarming.
Hope he drags them up again.

He's a man on a mission.

Carroll's weekly goals updates > Ronaldo's.

Becoming a folk hero at this point in his career must feel great. I admit it, I respect the guy for this.

Never would have thought we'd be cheering on Andy Carroll. But what the heck, go on!

Won 2-0 today, drew 1-1 the match before. Going well and up to 8th with 2 games in hand on everyone above them. If they won them they'd be 3rd.

Caroll letting them down, no goals in 2 now.

I thought Carroll scored in the 1-1 last week? Got an assist yesterday as well. Yes, I do like the idea of him playing for Bordeaux as they try to rebuild the club. I admit it

You're right and I've officially lost the plot! Could even "see" the scrappy own goal they scored in my memory that doesn't appear to exist in any of the videos I can find of their recent games. One of a number of things I got wrong yesterday.

I like what he's doing there too.

Away draw for them at top of the table Saint-Malo today, puts them up to 3rd at the time of typing this. Long-range lob for the Bordeaux equaliser by Soufiane Bahassa.

Forgot the latest update. Beat Les Herbiers 2-0 on Sunday in the last 64 of the French Cup. Sets up a home tie vs. Rennes from Ligue 1 in the next round to be played just before Christmas.

The match was played in some smaller stadium in Bordeaux, the Stade Saint-Germaine (Le Bouscat) with no fans in attendance. From what I can gather they didn't want to play to play at their usual place because they'd have to split the revenue with the away team in the cup and they'd lose money renting the big stadium for the game. Bit tight on the away team (Les Herbiers) if you ask me as they're a small team and the money would no doubt have been very useful to them. Obviously Bordeuax running on a very tight budget though right now.

The French football federation has said they are not allowed to do that in the future and must either allow fans in or play cup games away. Shouldn't be an issue vs Rennes as they'll probably get a big crowd I would have thought.

The fans still celebrated from outside the stadium.

Andy Carrol was back in the team after missing a couple, presumably through injury. Not on the scoreseet, both goals from Yanis Merdji.

Noticed they've got their own Amad. A Player called Amadou Diallo who was with the West Ham and Newcastle youth/reserve teams, capped at England u17 level.

I really hope Vendée Les Herbiers is French for Herbal Buyers and it's a team of stoners, but I'm sure being French it's a got a much more eloquent meaning & origin.

Good on Bordeaux for getting Rennes, I hope they get a great turnout for the match, which I'm sure they will, and bring in some much needed revenue!
