Fantasy Tournament: World Cup All-Time All-Stars

Damn Balu for picking Kempes!!!
You need to pick him, if you want him. You always complain afterwards . I was a bit worried you might go for him with your second pick. He's just so perfect for this role because of his workrate, can't think of a top quality AM who would contribute more in pressing than him. And he adds much needed goals against those crazy strong defenses all the teams have now.

I'm still a bit worried that midfield looks too weak to get me through the next round, even though they're perfect for my team :(.

u still have 2 picks left...
1 pick. Baresi, Schnellinger and Kempes are new to the team and none of the midfielders I wanted became available :(. The good thing is, I can wait relaxed what you guys leave for me, because I don't mind playing that team without another upgrade in the next round, I really like it.

Antohan: 1. Figueroa 2. Romario 3. Cannavaro
Balu: 1. Baresi 2. Schnellinger 3. Kempes
crappy/Pippa: 1. Garrincha 2. Rivelino 3. Passarella
Annah/all his rival managers: 1. Matthaus 2. Charlton
rpitroda: 1. Ronaldo 2. Djalma Santos
Theon/Snow: 1. Falcao 2. Muller
Cal?: 1. Xavi, 2. Platini
Polaroid: 1. Bobby Moore 2. Eusebio

I genuinely didn't think someone would go for him lol... Hugely mistaken!

Happens, when you have a team as weird as me. Can you think of a better upgrade for Ceulemans without Neeskens available? I thought about Fritz Walter, but it's difficult to argue that he would work just as good. The other option was Eusebio as a first round pick, then a centerback pair with 2nd and 3rd, but I wasn't ready to leave the Cruyff - false 9 theme yet and play him as an AM.

I also think he's a brilliant left wing pick in this draft with so few left midfielders/wingers available, so I wouldn't rule it out that someone else would have picked him.

Heh. I spent two hours pulling my hair out between him and Pasarella. Great pick given he is a non winner

Phew, I got lucky then because I wouldn't have been able to fit in Pasarella!

Facchetti works really nice for me being a top 2~ LB and also a non-winner. The step down would have been steep for my other pick!

I can see Anna winning this draft. He has players both casual voters and serious ones will rate

Thanks for the comment! I'd say the comment fits your own team perfectly as well! We're in the same boat with Fontaine/Leonidas possibly not getting the credit they deserve and that would hurt us both.

It was strange that the left back rush came after the centerback rush, thought with the players available it would be the other way round.

I went for the same logic, still mystified as to why I picked two keepers, it's all old players I want :( There were a couple I strongly considered who would have been so fecking handy to keep me flexible.

One of the things that has struck me while reading the match threads (I'm new to this thing, remember) is that hardly any emphasis is laid on keepers - and even less discussion takes places on the subject. It's natural in one sense (there are obviously more pressing matters to discuss), but still: one might almost conclude that it doesn't really matter who you sport in goal, as it's very unlikely to become a point of contention (or even interest) when the match kicks off.

It's worthy of some interest, though - because it's common enough to regard the art of goal keeping differently in terms of development, i.e. to regard keepers from the - let's say - pre Yashin era with some skepticism.

You've basically picked the two fullbacks who would be ideal for my MM/WW (depends how you think about the pitch, always did my head in that!).

Unfortunately there's feck all chance I can play both of them with Puskas, Boszik, Czibor, Ghiggia and Figueroa :(

My original idea was I could very likely get either eventually and switch Andrade to the remaining flank, just forgot Figueroa played in 66 FFS!!!!

I'm actually two players away from my ideal side reasonably doable side but there's feck all chance I'll ever get them :(

Won't matter much in this draft because they are all keeper at the World Cup and most of them were in the all-star team. How can you debate that?

This is true, which is why wasting a world cup winning spot on Maier was a really bad decision!

I'm going to have to replace me keeper at some stage, if I want to win, which is such a waste.

Right chaps - sorry for the delay, never had to re-jig a team so much in any draft before!

They always go really late. I was happy I would get the side I needed to start off with so chose to give myself era flexibility picking two keepers at 7th and 10th. I was more concerned about eras than continents as they definitely ad to be South American. Just never wrapped my head around the fact I would never play an old era keeper. 7th pick on someone I wouldn't play. Amazing brainfart. I still got all my targets and no one picked anyone I wanted/needed after that but I could have done with Conti for era flexibility or a certain other player who didn't get picked either.

The logic people apply with keepers is, so long as they aren't known to occasionally drop a bollock they'll be fine. Of course we know it doesn't work that way, but hey. I always pick keepers who are commanding/organising and good with their feet but no one gives a shit about that when it actually is quite a significant issue tactically. Grosics was an integral part of how the Magyars played being one of the very first sweeper-keepers. I tried to replicate that with Chilavert who was, by all means, Paraguay's main attacking outlet with his cracking long passes and confidence on the ball.

True enough - and it's just the one position, so every contestant can easily pick a Team of the Tournament keeper. But still, to me there are some names here that truly stand out. Banks, to make perhaps the most obvious example, is surely a greater asset to a team than certain other keepers who have been picked. Not a big deal, obviously - just struck me as something to note when observing how people go about arguing their cases.
