Books Fantasy Reads

Right Kingkiller chronicles.. having a read about it, seems like a potentially good book. Please let me know if you would recommend..
The first one is one of the greatest ever fantasy books, the second one is alright, the spinoff novella is shit and the third book won't ever be released.

Why won't the third one be released? Has he ran out of storyline like Martin..

He has become a cnut. There are long discussions about which one of them will release the book earlier, with most of the people thinking that Martin will release the next book earlier than Rothfuss (both published their last books - not counting novellas - in 2011).

Anyone here read A Land Fit For Heroes? Halfway through Book 1 right now and am a bit undecided. Can't say the world is gripping me and so far I really only like one character (Ringil).

First one is a phenomenal read, his prose is second to none.

While I found Wise Man's Fear alright, it didn't really do anything to progress the overall story. It was basically a collection of smaller stories that Kvothe (the main character) seemed to hop from one to another.

Thanks, going to purchase this or hint to someone to get it for me as a Xmas present.

No worries. Definitely worth a read. And you won't have to wait as long as everyone else for the third book either, bonus!

Fair point. He will need to wait just another 2378 years instead of 2383 years.
Very true!

Although you'd imagine with Lionsgate having movie, TV and gaming rights his hand will be forced sooner rather than later.

anyway everyone knows that he opened the doors of stone and changed his name to Kote from Kvothe, thereby losing his powers. He also killed the king at some point and that annoying idiot Denna was probably courting the king, and thus she hates him now, etc.

Finished Babylon's Ashes. A good book but not as good as Nemesis Games (or even Caliban's War or Leviathan Wakes). Still a decent reading.

Just finished this. Kinda unsatisfying climax with "and they all lived happily forever". Disappointed by lack of a cliffhanger. Good bock, but really lack the gripping hold and spirit of Nemesis Games.

Good read. I'd rate this 7.5/10.

Pat Rothfuss has said he will share chapter 1 of DoS if WorldBuilders raises $3 million. It's up to $2 million now.

He better hurry up and starting writing it then!

I hope it's the chapter where Kvothe reunites with Felurian and they have mind blowing sex. We did not have enough of that in the 2nd book.

I can't imagine he would fit that into one chapter.

True.

He'll probably troll everyone and it will be the chapter where he talks about the silence of the 3 parts and is about 2 pages long.

Of course it will. No doubt. He'll use it to stick two fingers up somehow.

What's people's view on The Broken Empire series?

Worth reading. Fairly short series as well so shouldn't take too long.

Finished reading the Prince of Thorns. A bit disappointed tbh. The narration and Jorg himself is quite good but the book suffers from next to no build up or background to some of the events.

Finished the Broken Empire. Didn't like the Prince of Thorns too much but the other two were quite good and Emperor of Thorns in particular was excellent. Was a bit skeptical of the structure of the books with all the flashbacks but overall I think they worked out quite well and made the books a bit more compact if anything. The ending had me slightly confused about the motivations of the Dead King though but the scenes were quite powerful.

Just found out that he's a written a sequel trilogy set in the same world albeit with different characters. That goes on my to-read list. Hope that elaborates on the Builders and the ghosts and their roles. I found that quite fascinating in the trilogy.

Finished the third book in The Acts of Caine. A bit weaker than the previous two books, I must say.

Just finished Sharp Ends, all in all it was pretty damn excellent. Javre, Shev and Carcolf were great new characters. My only issue is with Logen in the final story, he was just...off.

It was hinted in the other books that Logen was kind of crazy before and loved to kill people. Before we saw him on the books he was a far worse person than anyone else. Although the chapter was kind of confusing and the distinction between Logen and Bloody Nine is even more difficult to understand now.

Anyway, this book was all about Shev and she was fantastic, with Javre being batshit crazy.

I really love Abercrombie, cannot wait for his next book. I am as excited for it as for the next ASOIAF book.

Yeah that's what I mean about Logen. I always thought the hints before were that Bloody Nine was the one doing all the murdering and Logen was just swept along. This one seemed to blur the lines between them. It always seemed like Logen basically just had to deal with his reputation that Bloody Nine built up and just kill when he had to. Now it seems like he was a total mentalist too.

Shev was brilliant and Javre hilarious. I hope they come back and get worked into the main Bayaz story.

I'm more excited for his next book because I know it's actually coming and won't be spoiled by a TV show.

Loved this book.. Would be a huge hit as a film series if done right.

I have also decided to give Mistborn series a try, looks easy to pick up and a straightforward story.
It's my favourite fantasy series, by a long way.

I'm reading Tigana at the moment. It's shaping up pretty well after the first few chapters.

Tigana is magnificent, one of the best fantasy books ever.
I really disliked the First Law Trilogy. By the end, it became a chore to read.
I loved TFL, but I think that Abercrombie really shined at TFL standalones.

Finished the year with the last book on The Acts of Caine which was utter shit, and then with The Lords of the Sith which was quite good.

52/52 for the second year in the row, but I am quite fatigued from reading books of fantasy/sci-fi and with having less time than ever, I will go with much less books next year. Maybe just for 12 novels.

I really disliked the First Law Trilogy. By the end, it became a chore to read.

I felt the same way about it which disappointed me because people hyped it as the best writer since GRRM. I think that might have been the most pointless and forgettable walk to the end of the world in book 2.

I especially didn't like Abercrombie's lazy writing technique of jumping between characters in the final battle of book3.

[Glokta POV] He licked sourly at his empty gums. What is going on in there? (end paragraph)

What is going on in there? Said Jezal. [...]

Fine technique to use once or twice in a book but to use that technique in every paragraph for 60 pages is incredibly poor.

Abercrombie is the best fantasy writer since Martin, and you are all foo...

Seriously, the First Law books (including the standalones) is the best fantasy saga I have read after ASOIAF and The Wheel of Time.

I'm struggling to think of a series I enjoyed less than First Law. Probably Malazan but that's about it.

What? Blasphemy!

Dead serious. Aside from a few Glotka bits, I found it tedious and very ordinary. Good writer and some good characters maybe, but he doesn't know how to tell a good gripping story. In fact, if you only consider the plot, it's worse than Malazan. Read Best Served Cold which was better (helped no doubt by the fact it was a novella and hence more focused out of necessity) but nothing particularly. Just a bog standard revenge story.
