I doubt it, how many have we lost after Thiago? I think we'll survive.

Both separately are plausible, but both happening is not plausible.

You're confusing what's "hypothetically possible" with what's "plausible". It's hypothetically possible that Wilfied Zaha, who has shown us incredible stuff in pre-season, could go on to become the greatest of United legends. Possible, but not plausible because we have so little factual basis to go on to warrant that conclusion that it's simply beyond the realm of reasonable belief that reach that conclusion. But possible? Yes, Zaha could go on to smash Charlton's goal scoring record and Giggsy's matches played record and be hailed the greatest United footballer of all time.

The word "plausible", at least in this context, is close to being synonymous with 'believable". To hold that an assertion is plausible, it has to be more than hypothetically or theoretically possible. It's possible that the dude who uses the name "Ruud10" on RedCafe is Stephen A. Smith (an American sports commentator), but it's highly unlikely that that is the case. It's just not plausible, although it could just be true.

Reasonable people may hold differing opinions on just about anything. Was it once viewed as plausible by intelligent people that Aryans were the "master race"? Yes, it was. Was it once widely viewed by learned men and women that phrenology was plausible? Yes, it was. Both theories were debunked as pseudoscience, while other perfectly respectable theories, such as the sun spinning around the earth, have been debunked by improved fact-finding technologies such as telescopes.

You, a reasonable poster (although I question your choice of username), believe it's entirely possible, and therefore plausible, that we could land BOTH Fabregas AND Ronaldo -- or at least that someone who holds the keys to Old Trafford thinks we could land both. I agree that it is possible -- meaning nothing more than a logical possibility -- but I also believe it's extremely unlikely to the point of self-evident absurdity. As we sit here right now, it seems highly unlikely we'd land EITHER, let alone BOTH. But there are those, and perhaps you are one, who think it quite plausible that we'd be genuinely in for both. (No smokescreen.) Few things that could transpire over the next 30 days that would please me more than the historic spectacle of both Ronaldo and Fabregas holding up red shirts with black, button-down collars at Old Trafford, proving that you were right -- that it was indeed "plausible" because it actually came to pass -- and proving me wrong. I don't consider myself one of the dour posters here, but even the most optimistic of caftards would reject as wildly unlikely the prospect of seeing both Ronaldo and Fabregas brought in. But you never know. Until it doesn't happen, as you see it, it could happen, and therefore it's "plausible".

So, if you wish to use the word "plausible" to be synonymous with "impossible", please go ahead. But the usage of that word in that way would be alien to the ear of most English speakers. Or maybe English-speaking Americans. Do Brits who believe something that is highly unlikely but it is theoretically possible, is still "plausible"? Maybe we have a mere American-English v British-English divergence in play.

(My apologies to caftards...when a point of personal privilege is raised it's not in my nature to respond meekly.)

Barcelona's Cesc Fabregas 'to make Manchester United choice'

By Andy WestEuropean football writer

Barcelona manager Gerardo Martino has given Manchester United fresh hope in their pursuit of Cesc Fabregas by admitting part of the decision about a move rests with the midfielder.
The Spanish champions have already rejected bids of £25m and £30m from United for the former Arsenal captain.
The Red Devils are now weighing up a third attempt to secure his signature.
Martino said: "I would prefer him to stay with us and I dare say he will, but it's his decision."

Barca's hierarchy have always been adamant that Fabregas will not be allowed to leave, but Martino's latest comments carried a significantly softer tone.
Speaking after his team's 8-0 friendly thrashing of Brazilian side Santos at the Nou Camp on Friday, the recently appointed Martino said: "I had a short chat with him and told him what I think.
"Cesc will decide the situation, but it has not occurred to me that I won't be able to count on him.
"He is one of the best players in the squad. I think he will stay. But there's a part that he has to decide."
Although he started more games in La Liga than any other outfield player for his club last season, Fabregas is believed to be disenchanted with the number of times he was substituted and his difficulties in commanding a place in the team for Barca's most important games.
Martino reiterated he wants the midfielder to stay, adding: "If it was my decision, there wouldn't be any chance of Cesc leaving."
Fabregas, 26, was on the bench for Friday's meeting with Santos but came on at the start of the second half - alongside new signing Neymar - and made his mark by scoring twice and setting up the final goal for teenage striker Jean Marie Dongou.
Lionel Messi, Pedro, Alexis Sanchez, Adriano and an own goal by Santos defender Leo accounted for Barca's other goals.

Martino has basically handed Cesc a decision to make. Which is a big come down from his initial bullish: 'the club have refused two bids and I will refuse a third' (or whatever the exact quote was). If Cesc does end up leaving, what Martino said yesterday also absolves himself of any share of the 'blame'. Does Cesc have the balls?

Odd thing for Martino to say, as the whole thing had simmered down quite a bit.

But again though, we aren't ever privy to what really goes on behind the scenes.

feck it, I reckon he's ours. It's a massive change of stance from the club - going from "no, we've rejected the bids - no offer will satisfy us, he's staying" to "we want him to stay, but in the end, it's up to him".

Throw the £40million bid at them, and he's ours. The greasy-haired Spaniard will be ours!

I never thought this would happen but Barelona have gone from straight out denial to leaving the ball completely in Fabregas' court. Strange...

It's clear that he's ours if Fabregas wants to leave. But that's a big if. It's obvious that he's been considering it, or he'd surely have put this to rest a long time ago. But I have a feeling he's still on the fence, and it could go both ways.

It's such a huge decision for him.

Barcelona - Home club that he was desperate to get back to, world cup year so can't make a mistake. Won't be a regular starter.

Us - link up with VP which worked so stunningly, will be THE key man in midfield. Will lose the love of Arsenal fans instantly.

Let's hope he sees it as we do.

He has very few reasons to leave Barcelona and join us. We're not better than them, the city is far less attractive, he used to play for our rivals and was loved by them and it's only been two years since he completed his dream move to Barca. I think chances of us signing him are very slim.

I'd assume we've at least approached them with a figure for our third offer that's high enough for them to openly say that now.

It's a different one this time. They have a fecking army of them.
This is the "money" VP.

The interesting part is that again he talks in terms of the club wanting him to stay, but no mention of the player wanting to stay.

How many Vice Presidents do they have because this is a different one to the last one?
And it's perfectly possible that they could sell him for 'sporting' reasons if Cesc didn't get the guarantees he was after in his conversation with Martino.

Yup and it looks like instead of leaking our bid, we've decided to keep it quiet this time.

Posturing.

My guess is that they do need to sell him to fund the central defender signing, but don't want that to be used against them in negotiations.

Yeah, I still don't think we have any chance of signing him but that quote means nothing. Arsenal kept saying for years that they have the money to sign anyone they want but they somehow ended up wanting Gervinho.

We would not have been putting in so many bids unless we had got some encouragement from Fabregas.

Barca can make all the promises they want to Cesc. The reality is if that they were to play a game against Madrid for example, there is no way he would be a dead cert to start. I think (or hope) that Cesc would know this.

Cesc would start every game for our club, minus the occasions where he would need to be rested.

I'm not holding my breath and I wouldn't be especially surprised if we got both or neither.

I wouldn't hold my breath either, but this much I'm sure we and all the man-child online tough guys can agree on:

If United landed BOTH Ronaldo and Fabregas over the next few weeks it would be the most sensational piece of transfer business by any football club in the history of the universe. Imagine this:

De Gea
Rafael Rio/Evans Vidic Evra/Fabio
Zaha* Carrick Fabregas Ronaldo
Kagawa RvP

And in light of his new mates, Roo had a change of heart and decided he was no longer "angry and confused", the first XI would instantly be at an epic level, at least the equal of Bayern and Barcelona and the treble (maybe even the quad) would be ON!

If nothing else, there would be no more talk of Fellaini.

*It's not going to take long for Zaha to nail down a regular starting role for us, amigos.

How unembarrassing of us.

We should've made it public though. Keeping it secret was the reason why we lost out on Thiago. FFS we haven't learnt from any lessons.

Woodward out, Kenyon in.

Imagine when it's all said and done, we just sign Fellaini and Osman or Baines

MASS SUICIDE
