Fabio Coentrao

If it were up to me I'd place Evra on the bench and keep him there. His defending costs us every other game, Coentrao is the superior defender (and arguably not much worse if at all going forward).

Only recently. The first few months I thought he had been pretty great for us, with minimal mistakes and I was actually calling for him to be replaced 2/3 seasons ago. It's easier said than done to bench such an influential and experienced player as Evra is; especially when Vidic is being phased out and Ferdinand basically already is.

He's been a liability all season in my book. It's more an issue of mental tiredness than anything IMO. He's not been the same player since the World Cup shambles.

His Twitter profile says: Ex Director Comunicación del Real Madrid so he would know stuff, one would imagine.

He really is an AS journalist not just a random. If he says it's on, it means Madrid think it's happening - he wouldn't necessarily know United's plans if we're playing some game with them though.

Just needs the paperwork now.

When have I heard that before.

Excellent. Just as it looks like we might need some real cover for Evra after the knock he took to the knee today. Was worried about having to go into the Chelsea game with Buttner as our left back.

I was more worried good ol' Moyesy would spunk 20 million on Baines.

He's paving the way to the the come back of his fellow countryman. Get in, Woodwank!

To be fair, our paperwork did go through on time ;) edit: meant to be a reply to jojojo.

Anyway, a loan suggests Moyes isn't convinced by him or he would have tried to make it a permanent deal. I see it as just a stopgap till the summer until he can bring in Baines :D

Somebody FM this up quick, and see how it goes for us...

It's a sensible precaution, given his lack of game time.

Sorry to be a bigger buzz-kill than Buzz Killigton, but you guys still realize this isn't going to happen don't you?!

"Manchester United"... "Signing players"... It's like Latin or something, can somebody help me out?!

If this happens to be true and we end up shipping Fabio to Cardiff and Buttner to wherever the feck is willing to take him, it'd be a good start on making the squad stronger for the second half of the season.

About an earlier Coentrão... Despite him hating Porto with a passion (and having a knack for scoring against us) always admired him as a player. Looked like a future world beater on the wing (right and left) when he first showed up. Jesus decision to turn him into a left back looked like a ridiculous waste of forward talent at the time (and out of necessity, as they hadn't the position well covered but decent players up front), but the lad's determination and talent made him look like a natural there as well.

His goals against Porto. The last one (1:50) was the first time I really noticed the lad, and what an absolute show of skill that goal was. He was about 18 or 19 at the time.

I find the Fabio situation bizarre to be honest. He is, essentially, a clone of Rafael (one of our best players). He's not been given the same opportunities so isn't quite at his level, but the way he went from outstanding performer in Champions League quarters, semis and final to being on loan to QPR within a year is a fecking tragedy. And as far as I can tell, there was no real logic behind it in terms of his performances or talent level, which didn't seem to be in doubt on here at that time - somehow the marginalisation of him by Fergie and Moyes has convinced everyone he's not actually any good and it'd be no big deal if we flog him, rather than what they've actually seen of him on the pitch.

The idea that he wasn't going to get opportunities because Evra played every game didn't quite seem valid, considering the solution would've simply have been to stop playing Evra every single and give Fabio some games - good reasons for this being 1) Evra was mostly playing poorly, and 2) Evra was knackered, you know, because he played every single game. We also had the issue of back up for Rafael who is prone to the odd injury, as well as being our only natural right back (apart from, guess who - Fabio). Right there was another reason and opportunity to give him game time, but we've stuck our biggest centre back talent in Smalling at right back for the past 18 months instead.

feck knows what Moyes has against him. I'd keep him as back up for both full back positions, Evra should leave in the summer.

His lack of playing time after his run in the champions league was due to injury I believe, it just kept on happening. Then Rafael came back and made the spot his own, and Fabio struggled for game time. Big shame really.

After 3 years of Evra not being arsed to run back to defend when we lose the ball, half-hearted attempts to stop the opposition winger from dribbling past him and letting them run in behind him at will I think we'll be in for a pleasant surprise when we're consistently starting with a decent left back, not least one with the talent of Coentrao.

Watch him turn out shit now.

I think it's been stacked against Fabio from the off to be honest. When Rafael started to get some minutes it seemed like Fabio had been constantly battling shoulder problems. Then you consider that Rafael's competition was an ageing Gary Neville who was injured quite a lot anyway, while Fabio had to compete with Evra at/near his peak. Neville retired and Rafael seemed to overcome his injury problems (Well...) to nail the spot proper last season, all while Fabio was battling injuries of his own and was shipped out to QPR. It's not as if he can't play right back too, I think we would have seen him there if he was as good as his brother. I've been vocal about him not featuring this season, but Moyes isn't an idiot.

Would be happy to have Coentrao at OT. As for the Fabio we already have, just because he is Rafaels twin doesnt mean he has progressed the same as his brother. I do think he is/was just as talented but just hasnt made it yet for whatever reason. Also his stint at QPR was less than stellar.

Good signing if it goes through, much better than Leighton Baines.

I'm sure there were complaints from a few clueless spastics when he turned water into wine too.

Think of Bebe.

Yeah, we should put off signing Baines until he's a bit older.:smirk:

Seriously, if it is something like the above, Baines will be coming up to 30, so I really hope that's not Moyes' long term plan. I would hope that it was more like a stopgap until we can sign Shaw.

Either way, it would be good to add him to the squad, loan or on a permanent deal. Mainly to avoid spending needless money on Baines.

So people are still very much against signing Baines after Evra's been shown up so often this season? Why? He is quute good and still the whole of caf are saying Coentrao, a winger converted to an LB who has hardly played for a while now, is a better signing...

Age too high for prices thrown around.

Because Baines is a bit old, costs way too much and becuse a lot of people think that Baines isn't that good and his sometime poor performances in defense are masked by his good crossing, which isn't something that we need that much. Personally I think that Coentrao is better than Baines in pretty much all aspects of the game, is 4 years younger and likely will cost less than him.
