I'm pretty sure I've seen Coentrao play at right back as well so perhaps he wont displace Marcelo.
Very poor 'defender' indeed, would imagine Mourinho want's someone more solid to play in that position - although I always thought that Coentrao was quite attack minded too.
I think he's very reasonable at defending, specially considering he was just an attacking player a few seasons ago.
He is very aggressive on the ball, a true fighter. I've seen him erase Hulk out of the game more than a few times already.
Not sure if better than Marcelo (haven't seen much of Real) but almost certainly so, from what I read around here.

Yeah what you read would be true, poor defender and gets brushed off the ball far too easily - all too often, also rather poor positional sense, cracking going forward mind you. Has improved massively this season but still miles behind both Evra and Cole in terms of the art of 'defending'.
If Coentrao is a good a defender as you are saying then Marcelo's position may well be under threat - if this story is true of course.
Shocking, isn't it? I wonder how much the likes of Sneijder and Modric would cost in this market, too much I reckon. Signing the likes of Hernandez and Smalling is the way to go for a team without a sugar daddy and a budget of £100m a year, not well known stars.

Is it really that much out of proportion compared to the likes of €20m for Forlan four years previous from the same club for a player on a similar level but 4 years younger, or £30m (23 + 7) for Alves?
This signing makes sense. Versatile left sided player who could challenge Marcelo for the left back spot or provide cover for the left wing position. Plus Mourinho likes having a few Portuguese around.

Some people are more/less perceptive about defending than others. It's an opinion held by multiple people who have seen him enough to judge this season.
I don't see why you can't just accept (or ignore) their opinion rather than belittle it, you've made your opinion on Marcelo clear so why not just leave it at that?

I don't think he really wants to get involved in something like that. Most don't. That's sort of the point...that you've done it with more than one person on exactly the same subject. It doesn't really lead anywhere as you saw last time.

He's significantly improved his defending although that probably has a lot to do with the way they are set up under Mourinho. At the highest level is when he's shown up though. His positioning is all over the place at times.
The fact he looks so good going forward blinds people to his frailties at the back (see Boss).
We saw how good Marcelo is defensively when even Afellay skinned him.
I think that's a little unfair. Anyone can get skinned from time to time.

If Real are going to sell Marcelo for a bargain like they did with VdV and Sneidjer to accomodate Coentrao, we should go for it. I think he's on his way into maturing one of the best left-backs in the world. I've seen Ronaldo pretty much enjoys playing with him on that flank, shows the trust he has in the Brazilian
We have 2 reasons why we don't need him. Evra and Fabio.

Fabio's future is on the left. They are competing with each other for the right because of a certain Patrice Evra.
Yes Evra is 30 but that's no reason to get rid. He's not had a great season by his usually high standards but with a full Summer's rest he'll be back to his usual best next season.
Marcelo is great going forward but he's really not that great at the back. He's improved that aspect this season but he still isn't too good at the back.

I never saw Fabio Coentrão playing as a right back. Right winger yes, he can play in both wings, but he's much more used to the left and as a defender it's only in the left he's been tried.
That said, the kid is very talented and versatile so I wouldn't be surprised if he could actually adapt quickly to the RB position, like he did with the LB.

You sound like a jilted lover. Marcelo is a very talented football but defensively he's still gets exposed regularly. This side of him hasnt improved like the rest of his game. Explains why Madrid have been constantly linked with left backs over the last couple of seasons.

I don't get why they seem to think a nice big squad will counter Barca's dominance who have like half the numbers but have a gel factor Real Madrid will never get if they add 3/4 players every summer to mix shit up.
