Just a rumour as of yet.

This from a newbie:

Done deal they say in Portugal today(correia da manha, very reliable on Lisbon teams' transfer dealings).

Fee is 25m euros + 5m in future incentives.

He's looked really excellent the few times I've seen him, adds so much to the attack. Looked like he could be got at defensively but still, certainly looks an improvement in my view. Hardly a necessary one but Madrid have never been one for sensible signings.

What could this mean for 'best left back in the world' Marcelo?

Good player but unnecessary signing considering how well Marcelo has played.

That seems a very odd one to me as Marcelo has been excellent this season and offers pretty much the same assets as Coentrao. I though Mourinho wanted a right back so he could move Ramos to central defense?

If true Madrid look strong(er) next season and with Mourinho in control and him getting his team it could be his year.

Just find this signing (if true) odd. Like the others have said above, why sign him when Marcelo has been excellent for them? You could move either of them to the wing but that means Di Maria or Ozil etc will lose a space.

1. 25 million for Coentrao
2. Altintop signed
3. C.Ronaldo to Manchester City
4. Higuain sold to sign Adebayor
5. New 4 yr deal for Pepe

They are building a fantastic team for the Europa League :D

His agent is Jorge Mendes so him ending up at Real is no surprise. Among Mendes other clients are Carvalho,Ronaldo,Mourinho,Pepe and Di Maria.

true, a quality player but 2 top class players in one position is only going to create problems unless marcelo is turning into a left winger

real are starting to make their move, sahin, altintop and now coentrao...good signings so far by jose...

30 million for Coentrao
30 million for Giuseppe Rossi (to Barcelona)

No value in the market for real, madness.

I hope we can stay out of all this shit.

Yeah and what are they going to do with the wingers they have?

You mean Ronaldo who doesn't play on the wing and Di Maria who mostly plays on the right side? Real haven't had a proper left winger for years.

Not every one of them is going to be a starter but Mourinho has always had a high quality bench as his disposal.

How many have benfica sold now?
Ramires, Coentrao, Luiz and Di Maria

He doesn't?

It's surely hard to fit Marcelo into an attacking line-up of Ronaldo, Di Maria, Ozil, Higuain/Benzema/new signing, and so you'd think that this will make Marcelo more of a squad player which seems harsh given what many regard as a much improved season.

So Ronaldo will play up front with someone like Higuain, then you got Coentrao on the left, Di Maria on the right, and pick two of: Alonso/Ozil/Khadira/Sahin/Kaka/Diarra in the middle.

Lot of discomfort for many of those players, plus the likes of Gago/Leon/Canales/Granero rarely getting any games.

He plays where he wants.

Also, how many players does Mourinho have at his disposal in right and left back? Marcelo, Ramos and Arbeloa to pull the rest of the weight on both sides. No one else. Makes perfect sense to get another left back, since Arbeloa is more of a right back, and therefor can rotate much more.

How can we have Anderson when we have Scholes, Carrick and Fletcher playing in the middle? Oh and Gibson and Giggs? SAF rotates. Real aren't Barca. They don't stick with the same team every single game.

And like I said. It's well known that Mourinho wants a backup player for every position on the pitch who will not be a big weak link when stepping in. That's why he always has very strong benches. That's why he wins titles as well. Great people coming off the bench.

Look at his striking options. He uses one striker but would like to use two as well. He has Benzema and Higuain and Ronaldo can cover. Needs one more there and that's why he got Adebayor for loan.

In the middle he has Ronaldo, Özil, Di Maria, Alonso, Khedira, Diarra, Granero, Pedro Leon, Kaka, Canales and Gago.

Gago and Kaka haven't been around much this season so that leaves 9 players. Him bringing in Altintop and Sahin and the lack of playing time for Canales, Pedro Leon and Granero makes you wonder that he's not all to happy with all of them. So 13 players all in all, some of them will leave and Ronaldo covering two fronts.

In defense he had Pepe, Carvalho, Albio and Garay covering the CB with the before mentioned 3 players at full back. That's not great cover is it? Plus Casillas, Dudek and a young goalie that brings the tally to 25 (plus three of which he has acquired minus Adebayor).

27 players all in all with now more needed cover in defense and players yet to be sold.

I see nothing odd there. We've been using 23 players this season and that's not counting Bebe, Obertan Kuszczak or Hargreaves who are all part of the squad or mentioning Welbeck and Cleverley and Macheda and Diouf who were loaned out.

You say he's got many players when he's way more off our own count of players. I don't think he'll have a problem.

I was more looking at it from the player's point of view, that's all I was talking about. I didn't say anything about them having too many options or having too big a squad, I just said that it might be a bit harsh on Marcelo to move from guaranteed first choice to first choice back-up.

Ramos has always looked the weak link defensively to me. He can lack a bit of pace. If you were to move anyone to the bench it would be him.

Coentrao is a brilliant player-world class-who will be a great asset to Real Madrid. If they've put Mourinho in charge of transfers, then the world better watch out.

Correio da manha = The Sun

I knew I shouldn't have been so hasty in taking his word, last time I did that with a newbie I declared Muricy Ramalho as the new Brazil coach!

Feck sake.

The language may be unfamiliar, but that sure is one mighty familiar format:

Marcelo isn't going to be benched. He's one of the first names on the sheet. It's Coentrao who'd be the backup.

Ok, thanks. Such a pleasure conversing with you.

These are the going rates for good footballers in 2011.

They have increased in price in line with growing club revenues.

how much did he earned from the bebe transfer?

In Portugal it was rumoured to be around 3 million euros, since he owned 30% of Bebe's pass.

He got those 30% on a free when he became Bebe's agent and two weeks and few bought newspaper covers later Bebe was sold for 9 million euros. So, not bad for a couple of week's work.
