Fabinho

Darmian is an odd one. I thought he started pretty well until presumably LVG sucked out his soul.

Mourinho might be able to fix him

On the other hand, Evra was an underrated fullback bought from Monaco - that went pretty well

Why must we buy players for a position in which we already have 2 senior players. This Fabinho is good. But Valencia in good form produces better performances than any flavor of the month fullback's highlight reel.

And Jose will find Darmian a useful player as he likes one fullback to be attacking and one to be defensive minded. I can see Darmian and Shaw fulfilling the duties of Azpi and Ivanovic

Any downsides to Fabinhos game? Seen him once or twice but never paid direct attention to him.

People who want Fabinho are deluded

So is Valencia better than Dani Alves then I take it?

also if you want to go down the stats tell all route Fabinho got 6 goals and 4 assists last year Valencia got 0 goals and 3 assists. Valencia passing stats is so high because he only ever passed backwards.

So who is the more effective player?

Fabinho played 2 and a half times more games than Valencia because of that 5 month injury spell on the sidelines. Also, many people say the French League is shit. Even if it isn't shit, finishing 3rd in an easier league compared to finishing 5th in the premier league with a manager who has 0 attacking intent has got to be worth a lot more

I've read Fabinho can defend well so he should be an improvement on Valencia who has positional problems

Wasn't Darmian voted twice in to the team of the year in Italy? He also came with a reputation for defending well.

It's not broke, so don't fix it.

I've never seen this Fabinho, so can't comment on him.

I want Darmian to stay. If not, buy Fabinho for his position and part ex Darmian with Bonucci, obviously we will have to pay extra!

Is someone on here really saying Valencia is good enough? The dude doesn't even know where his left foot is, let alone how to use it. Fabinho is a cheap option if Jose doesn't want Darmian long term, but Valencia is old, slower, and has proven to be a liability.

He is broke, he can't defend, that was clear for all to see last season, people that want to claim otherwise should never be taken seriously ever again.

Memphis also had a reputation for being one of the most productive wingers and was regarded as the best young talent around. See how that turned out...

Yes, I agree Darmian can't defend.

Just can't chuck Darmian away that quickly, people were salivating over him when we bought him, needs to be given another chance.

Seems like he can play decently on RB and DM. Both position can be improved, especially DM. For $30m and 22 y.o, I don't see the downside.

Need to be given a fecking boot under his ass just like Memphis

The thing that pisses me off is people complaining about Valencia and how he is totally not good enough and should be sold but he plays 10 times better for us and on a more consistent level than Darmian does.

I have no problem with giving him another chance. Just that Valencia should be ahead of him in the pecking order when the season starts (after all, Valencia arrived earlier this pre-season and was on a brilliant run of games towards the end of the season which wasn't allowing Darmian into the team). Then they can fight it out.

Under Van Gaal.

Mourinho is a far better manager. Darmian looked a very good player for Italy before coming to us and getting Van Gaaled.

Did you watch the Euros? He was shit. So much so that Conte subbed him off in the first game and he didn't start another game after (iirc)

Also, stop with the van Gaaled thing. We had the 2nd best defensive record in the league, and he still couldn't defend.

I have to confess I didn't see much of Darmian in Italy and remember him being pretty good at the World Cup but can Van Gaal, despite all his faults, be blamed for Darmian not looking like he's ever seen a football before never mind what to do with it? That's even ignoring the problems he had defensively, mainly how passive he was for most of the season, because he at least showed some defensive capabilities to begin with (albeit against mostly shit teams).

Valencia is what he is - a great but limited pro, Darmian and Memphis (to a lesser exent) need to be given the benefit of the doubt after what LvG did last season, it's just too easy to move on to the next player, and pointless in this instant.

I remember reading the Bayern forum crying on to their frankfurters when we signed him last season, he will come good with a bit of love imo.

Anyway we need a CB not a RB.

Van Gaal made us defend far better. If you look defensively wank in an lvg team you need to have a hard look at yourself. I don't think the "Van gaaled" excuse applies to Darmian

Ya lets not sign a RB in the hope that Darmian isn't rubbish again this season, because taking chances for us has worked so well for us the past few seasons. :wenger:

Signing another RB is also taking yet another chance.

I remember Darmian was good before he came here. I was going we'd sign him and he started well. Mourinho could get him playing well if he's inclined to do so.

If this guy's any good I'd welcome him. Neither Darmian or Valencia have shown themselves to be reliable. With either in the side, right back looks like a weakness.

Exactly. We seem to live in a generation where a player gets a few games to prove himself and if he doesn't please enough fans, he needs to be replaced by some other sexy sounding foreign player.

Football doesn't work liken that. Look at how well Smalling flourished under Van Gaal but was quite average under Fergie.

Considering we've seen how Darmian performs, in a team that took very little chances and yet he was still gotten the better of just about every time he was isolated, I would put my money on there being a higher chance Fab will perform.

Nearly all players underperformed during the LvG era. Let's see how they fare under Mourinho before talking about replacing them.

Because Van Gaal put so much emphasis on the defence, our defence was never an issue with Van Gaal, the attacking aspect was. Yet Darmian still struggled to convince bar his first 2 or so games he was dire. I actually like Darmian but if Jose finds it necessary to sign a new RB, then so be it.

This first season bollocks is overrated too, imo. Players struggle in new environments but there are also many examples of the opposite. How can a defender who can't defend when he doesn't have support be a problem due to environment? His lack of concentration in times like when he let Vardy through to cost us 3 points etc. can be costly when it comes to mounting a title challenge and/or top 4 as was proved last season.

Shaw is all left foot, I presume you don't want rid of him too? Valencia may be getting on but he's still got pace and power. I'm almost certain that Mourinho will like those qualities a lot in this league. Converting him to full back was one of Van Gaal's better decisions for us. He's so vastly underrated on here despite making a marked improvement to the side on his return from injury.

I'm not against signing Fabinho as the long term successor to Valencia, but I don't like to see a player (Darmian) booted out following a solitary season of limited opportunity.

Of course, I'd prefer we kept Darmian, he can be used on both sides. Still think we should get Fabinho, our only options there is someone who may or may not come good and an ex winger.

Some fans just want a shiny new toy every summer. I blame FIFA Ultimate Team and the FM games ;)

Why is this constantly used against Valencia? It's like just because he is an ex winger he can never be good at any other position :wenger:
