F1 2024 Season

George Russell will start Sunday's Qatar Grand Prix from pole position after Max Verstappen was given a one-place grid penalty for impeding the Brit during qualifying.

As they prepared for their final flying laps at the end of qualifying, Red Bull's Verstappen caught Russell by surprise as he slowed in the third sector, leaving the Mercedes driver needing to take late evasive action that forced him onto the kerb and gravel.

Weird grid penalty considering George wasn't even on a hot lap but okay Max was slow on the racing line so I guess you could give it

I dont think I have seen a 1 place grid pen before
I haven't either. To be honest, I didn't know it existed in the rulebook.

Just caught up with the sprint and qually for Sunday. Perez being overtaken in the pitlane was the best bit of action of the weekend. It's a awful track for F1. As long as you defend turn 1, you arent going to be overtaken for the rest of the lap.

That Arab money though…

fecking sick of the shit. This and Miami could feck off and nobody would miss them at all but… modern F1…

I’d rather go back to Mugello than this shit hole in the desert.

One-grid penalties have happened twice at least

(unrelated reasons)

It's a weird one given that neither driver was on a push lap, but as the document state Verstappen was well outside of his delta (which Verstappen explained was because he let Alonso and Norris by) and Russell was staying within his delta. Russell stated that 'if a car was going slow in a high speed corner, it should not be on the racing line' which is fair enough, and the documents add that Max was looking his mirrors several times on the straight between 11 and 12. They also added that Russell had clear visibility of Max and wasn't on a push lap.

Going by the reasoning, it's fair enough to give it I guess, you shouldn't be going slow in a high-speed corner with another car approaching, but my issue is that there's a fair bit of inconsistency in what's penalized and what isn't over the course of a season, or in some cases over the course of a weekend. We already had 40 infringements by 17 drivers for going slowly yesterday, and the aborted start situation in Brazil. Maybe having full-time stewards would mitigate that.

Here's max comment on the penalty. Taken from here.
MAX: "We were all just driving slowly. I wouldn't know what I could have done differently. [...] The fact that I have to go [to the stewards' office] is already very strange to me. Otherwise, next time I'll just drive flat out too and pretend to crash [into the other car]."

"He should have braked. I braked. Just like the cars in front of me. And I don't want to screw them. I'm honestly a bit done with all of this at the end of the season."

Hamilton saying he's not fast anymore and not saying it's the car tailored towards Russell. He still seems equally fast in the races, sometimes catches up with Russell but quali means he's starting too far back.

Hopefully he can find some extra focus and enthusiasm in a new car and team, do a lot of reaction training after a break but seems like 2022 was his last good year and time is catching up now.

Just found out about the penalty for Max. What the actual feck. Especially the 1 penalty pt though losing pole after not getting it for so long must really hurt for him.

Precedent for this is already razor thin given how often this happens and under far more dangerous circumstances ending in mere reprimands...But seriously though.another penalty point as well? feck the FIA.

Just seen the penalty. What a joke this sport has become. Rules and penalties altered at the drop of a hat. And Verstappen is the kind that doesn't forget.

It's a weird one. He's been beaten all season in qually with a 0.16 gap to Russell. This weekend was 0.4 so it suggests they are running different setups. He does become a moody so and so when he isnt happy.

There's also James Allison and Co using Hamilton post summer break to test more extreme setups as data gathering for next season. Mercedes can't be caught in constructors championship nor can they catch anyone.

Schumacher at Mercedes was no slower than he was at Ferrari when being beaten by Rosberg 41-17 in qually and 324 points to 197 over 3 seasons. His reaction time traces showed as much. It's just that the ruleset changed and it didn't suit Schumacher's style of driving. Bono has said this ruleset doesn't suit Hamilton's driving style.

Totto said before Las Vegas GP, that Mercedes would have dropped Hamilton end of this season even if he hadn't signed for Ferrari. So maybe they are seeing something in the data.

Proof will be next season when racing against Leclerc.

I think Russell got very lucky. He made a mistake in the last run of Q3 and took one of the corners in 8th gear flat not 7th flat so the engine map didn't give him full ERS deployment and he lost time.

As an aside, personally I don't think ERS automated engine maps shouldn't be allowed. The drivers should have to do it. They will make more mistakes but it will spice up the racing.

George Russell has always been very quick over a qualifying lap. But nevertheless, Hamilton has been pretty disappointing all season, especially qualifying. But he has the chance next season to get back to the top. That is assuming Ferrari are able to provide him a car he can win with.
But it is a gamble and it could go wrong.

Don't often watch F2 but this looks more exciting than F1, doubt we will get the same level of action later this afternoon.

Kind of glad this is on now, can leave Husband watching the commentators gushing over Liverpool and 115 charges fc with his dad, while I watch this upstairs. Even a borefest is better than listening to gushing over Liverpool

Leclerc asks Ferrari "do we have time to change balaclava?" as part of his drinks system is broken and he can't get any liquid\. "No Charles we don't have time so you need to keep it like this," answers race engineer Bryan Bozzi\.

Course Lando flies off the line now it doesn't matter

Franco isn't helping his cause and has become very crashy (fault pending here)

This will hopefully be a bit interesting now, Red Bull don't seem to have the race pace of the others recently
