F1 2024 Season

Verstappen in a league of his own right now, a legend of a driver. He put in some legendary drives this season, made a real difference to the World title.
Next season could be a classic as the advantage in performance seems to be slipping away from RB. I suspect Hamilton in a Ferrari next year could be the man to beat, he has a similar race IQ to Verstappen.
The advantage already slept long ago.

His best year in my opinion.
First time he hasn’t had the best car for the majority of the year, or the Masi decision.

He has been almost perfect this year. Still had a tendency to push the rules when challenged. Hopefully next year we get a title fight with Max and someone he isn’t massively mentally stronger than

I think he'll wipe the floor with Leclerc, more so because of Leclercs temperament than anything else.

It certainly won't be because of his driving because he is clearly past his best. One or two good races in another poor season, and this is what, his third average/poor season in a row and suddenly you think he will wipe the floor with Leclerc next season who is arguably the second best driver on the grid this season, and probably overall in last three seasons anyway.

Amazing as always from unbiased Hamilton fans. I just want to know based on what some of you people think that is still one of the quickest drivers on the grid, because he certainly wasn't anywhere near that level for years now, it's quite obvious the age combined with lack of motivation because Max is clearly the quicker driver has caught him up. And it seems that is completely fine for him, he talks and drives like he is half retired, but his fans can't seem to swalow it.

Definitely his best WDC season so far. Had the fastest car for the first part of the season by a margin, especially first 6 races, but then held off the McLaren challenge when he didnt. Needs to stop doing the on track dirty stuff when under real pressure as he has all the required talent to race without it.

If Red Bull give him another WDC contender car, let's hope someone other than the pitiful Norris and McLaren pitwall will be the opposition. A Ferrari challenge from both Hamilton and Leclerc, plus Russell in the Mercedes could be really interesting.

Will be a very tight season as all resources (as much as possible) will be on the 2026 cars and new ruleset.

I was trying to avoid the result but I can't find any catchup streams and the footy is on soon so I've just looked at the results...

Delighted for Russell and well done to Max. Hopefully Red Bull stop their dominance next year with Newey out of the picture.

First of all I'm far from a Hamilton fan, don't like him that much at all actually, but he is obviously a very talented driver. Which brings me on to my second point, did you bother reading the whole post? Or just cherry picked that bit to have a whinge? I said IF Hamilton still has his mojo, if he doesn't anymore then he won't wipe the floor with him at all, it'll be the other way around.

Very very nice interview even a non Max fan would probably like. The stuff starting around the 7 min mark hits hard though. I'm a fair amount older than Max now and I didn't start thinking about that until the last few years and already spent way too much of my time working myself silly. Spending time with the ones you love trumps everything in the end.

It would put him behind Leclerc and Max.

Max wont care but Leclerc will be even more steaming when he sees that has robbed him of a podium.

Be surprised if McLaren dont raise it. +/- 2 points in constructors could decide the title in the end.

Apparently Sainz did nothing wrong as he didn't enter the pit, if you cross to enter then it's a pen and I recall if exiting the pit and cross it's a penalty. Only on rare occasions do they change the rules for specific tracks for safety like Baku.

I'm sure they cross it a lot at Interlagos but they don't enter so it's nothing. Sometimes side by side racing happens when a driver crosses the pit line but obviously stays out and the race continues as normal.

Formula 1 announced today that it has reached an agreement in principle with General Motors (GM) to support bringing GM/Cadillac as the 11th team to the Formula 1 grid in 2026.

Formula 1 has maintained a dialogue with General Motors, and its partners at TWG Global, regarding the viability of an entry following the commercial assessment and decision made by Formula 1 in January 2024.

Over the course of this year, they have achieved operational milestones and made clear their commitment to brand the eleventh team GM/Cadillac, and that GM will enter as an engine supplier at a later time. Formula 1 is therefore pleased to move forward with this application process and will provide further updates in due course.

@michaelandretti

The Cadillac F1 Team is made up of a strong group of people that have worked tirelessly to build an American works team. I’m very proud of the hard work they have put in and congratulate all involved on this momentous next step. I will be cheering for you!

Murica.

Meanwhile GM will get torn apart under the next administration. Not entirely undeserved either. They may rue the investment.

The link isn't working, is there anyway I can search for it would quite like to watch it?

Random question but has anyone read either of Guenthers books? One seems to be an autobiography the other a more behind the scenes, need ideas for people to get me as smaller Xmas gifts, but not sure which would be the more interesting?

Let me om you the link so it doesn't go into preview mode. Looks like direct linking is blocked by F1. If you take the link I'll pm and copy and paste it in a browser it should work. Alternatively if you search "Max Verstappen interview" it shows at the top..at least in my YT app.

Edit: cant access your profile for pm for some reason so try this: Xhttps://youtu.be/6JeGLIMJif0?si=PXyG5oSUwAisxxWx

Thank you! Before I sit through 19 minutes is it the official F1 channel, "Max Verstappen first interview as a 4 time f1 world champion?"

Correct. Its a calm sit down instead of a walking one. Usually don't care too much for longer interviews but I quite enjoyed it.

Saw he did one too for Dutch tv except he was already kinda toasted and was literally drinking gin and tonic on their TV. We re too prudish for that in this country.

Just watched it, brilliant interview and made him come across really personable

Definitely F1 isn't the be all and end all for him unlike your Lewis/Alonso etc types, be interesting to see what he does when his contract is up, sounds like he wants to try other things and get to spend more time with his family

He's definitely not into all the glitz and celeb side of things, fair play to him

Would like for him release an autobiography when he retires as think it would be a very interesting read, but don't think he'd be into that sort of things

Also anyone who likes lego - all 10 teams cars are available from next March as the smaller builds

we've got the Aston Martin, McLaren and Mercedes from this year's range

I'm all in favor of a 11th team. 22 Cars will make a noticeable difference, a 12th would be even better. Competition for the 10th spot and point will be more meaningful again. I miss the times when coming 6th was a major victory for a underdog car, this will add in the right direction.

So they will be using Ferrari engine initially till GM provides them the engine.

Who do we think they will have as drivers for 2026?

Colton Herta is a shoe in I think, drives for Andretti have been vocal supporters on a drive since their F1 project kicked off. Pato O'Ward could be another, drives for a GM backed team in Indy and has done numerous tests with McLaren.

Whoever can bring them the most sponsors , doubt it will be based only on talent

I think they will have no problem on sponsorship, they will probably push on American talent first.

O'Ward actually looks pretty good, worth a go I would have thought.

Isn't that exactly what's happened this season? Haas, Visa Cash worst name ever app and Alpine have been fighting it out all season and getting 5-6 points total in a race is huge for them.

Yeah I think the unfortunate thing is that it's not until you watch something like DtS that those fights are shown to be more important than what a broadcast might have you believe. Though I do feel like because of the more active competition between them the broadcasts have also given them more exposure than they might have otherwise. I may be completely misremembering peak Schumacher years for instance but I seem to recall watching him and maybe 1 or 2 others cruising way out front and it literally being a background noise with the only times you really saw the back and mid markers when they would crash or do something else to f up.

I wonder if Perez gets fired by RedBull, GM will take him? £50mil in sponsorship, plus knowledge of how RedBull operates. Experienced driver. Obviously completely and utterly broken by his time at RedBull. I would have thought a American driver plus a experienced F1 driver would be ideal for first few seasons.

Though if they are running Ferrari engine, it maybe a Ferrari reserve driver who gets a seat.

Andretti mentioned Herta by name today, so your correct on that. Plus a experienced driver. So it remains to be seen who that is.

I think if Perez is sacked, woud be a serous choice, would he take a season out if indeed he was sacked, I am not sure.
I am inclined to agree with @F-Red that sponsorship may not be a worry for them and an American driver would be pushed for, obviously the only current one is Sargent.
Would they consider taking Ricciardo ? Experience and all that.
Doing some very quick research throws up these name that could be considered.
Some American drivers who could race in Formula 1 (F1) include:
  • Colton Herta
A Californian driver who has been close to F1 for years, but has been unable to join due to a lack of super license points. Herta could pursue super license points if Cadillac F1 enters in 2026.

  • Jak Crawford
A North Carolina driver who has risen through the European single-seater ladder. Crawford is part of Aston Martin's driver development program and is aiming for a reserve role in 2025 and a seat in 2026.

  • Larson
A NASCAR driver for Chevrolet who has won the Daytona 24 Hours and competed in the Indianapolis 500. McLaren boss Zak Brown has suggested that Larson could be tested for F1.

Valtteri Bottas says he wants clarity on his ‘day job’ in F1 in 2025 before considering a move to another series, having been approached for a full-time IndyCar seat while already opening talks with GM-Cadillac for 2026.

With the ban of Mclaren's rear wings and subsequent drop in performance, in wonder how much of car development is simply what the FIA lets you get away with. I still see Mercedes and Mclaren have extremely bendy front wings compared to other teams. I should also mention that teams like Ferrari and Rd Bull are fast without them. I wonder if AM was allowed to continue with its original front wing from '23 , where they would be relative to other teams.

This is also where Krack's shortcomings as a TP comes through. He should've been raising hell about FIA being so selective on these crackdowns. It basically took a twitter user to show Mclaren openly flouting rules for the FIA to do something even when teams had complained directly. I wouldve openly asked FIA questions through the media regarding this. Zak Brown went crazy over a non existent issue. But Krack simply doesnt have the gravitas in the paddock for such things.

The paragraph is correct, but that's been the history of F1 since it's very first race. FIA come up with technical directives. Teams interpret those directives and try to find loopholes. If FIA are unhappy about said loophole, they ban it.

Sometimes the FIA are initially ok with what is being proposed, it's only after a complaint from another team(s) that they may got back to their original ruling and veto it because a technical lawyer has found something else in the directives which now makes the new part illegal. So on and so forth.

Button won a championship through this process. Vettel lost one in a Ferrari through this process.

The second paragraph about twitter is bollocks. The teams take endless pictures of rival cars and are fully aware of the rival car speeds through all the corners and straights via GPS tracking. So if they think a rival has something new they will be on it like a flash.

Krack's shortcomings is rubbish as well. AM fundamentally went in the wrong direction to the point they stripped the car back to what they had from the 3rd GP of the season. Complaining about other teams would have achieved what with a car that slow?
