F1 2021 Season

For the first time in many years Im tempted to watch an F1 race mainly because of Schumacher Jnr.
 
Bit of a weird one really, the story has some mileage given their history. My guesses is that the offer for the team came unexpectedly and the family made a call to take it whilst it was there. Meant that the preparation for them to get their fan fare was pretty muted and they obscured into silence. Frank's story was the last of the true great independents out there.

Its not looking good this season judging by the times and sponsors.

I used to a mad Senna fan. literally mad. I think I cried when he died and cried when prost carried his coffin.

I think when you go back to early 2000's id be all over this thread - but I lack any love for the sport. I really wish I had it back. I actually worked in F1 with Jordab in 1992 & 96-97.

I went on last night looking to buy merchandise. Thought maybe McLaren, but couldn't hit the buy now. Ferrari ain't for me as I like the underdog. Williams i used admire - can't see if anymore.

If I looked at drivers I probably like Verstappen but no fan of Red Bull. Woukd be great to have Jordan back.
 
That would make me switch off tbh. If he's like his dad - boring as F**k
His dad was a hero of mine and I was fortunate enough to see him win at the only GP I've been able to go to in Australia about 17 years ago.

Where has each team spent their F1 tokens?

McLaren – As per Article 22.8.6, the team has had to spend both of its development tokens fitting a Mercedes power unit into its chassis for 2021, under the watchful eye of the FIA which ensured that they weren’t making changes purely for performance gain. The team said last season it was not happy with the token system allowing Aston Martin to adopt 2020 Mercedes parts free of charge.

This is very harsh. Mclaren signed the engine contract before COVID, so the FIA move everything because of that and McLaren get screwed over. They also have a right to be pissed about the Racing Point situation too.

McLaren agreed to it, so I don't think they're screwed over, they'll also have a performance benefit. They're just not able to adapt the chassis for performance gains (ie. the aero at the rear of the car). They also could have waited till 2021 to put the new engine in but they would of had to alter their terms with Renault & Merc. The Racing Point situation is a bit different, as they're putting 2020 parts on a 2021 car, which some consider a loophole, but something that Alpha Tauri has done for many years, and something that McLaren can also do.

Williams is one of the biggest names in F1 history and the end of it as a family business doesn't even get a mention in 5 hours of documentary.
 
They really fecked up not having the George Russell Mercedes story featured. There was so much drama in that weekend and surely the producers should have known that they needed to have cameras in the Merc garage for it.

I'd have liked to see them spend a bit of time with George- how he was feeling etc. They could have surely gone and spent a bit of time with him at least

The Grosejean accident was chilling, how he walked away from that is a miracle, as not only did it rip in 2, the section he was in embedded into the barrier, then the fire. It was miraculous not only did he get out, but just his hands were burnt, his body was practically untouched.

I'd have been quite interested to have even 10 minutes of that episode showing them explaining the safety progressions and designs that led to his survival e.g. the design of the suit/ the car etc.

It was nice they showed all the people who saved him at least.

What's happening with Albon this season, I thought he'd be "demoted" to Torro Rosso like Gasly, but he's not listed at all? I wonder if Perez hadn't done that last to first race - would they have kept Albon?

Will Racing Point have to redesign the car this year - they were authorised to have it "copy" the Mercedes this year, does that mean this year they have to re do it?

They had only three film crews tagging along pre-agreed arranged ahead of the season. So they can't be everywhere. I am sure they didn't know nor expected so much frame in one season. Suspect they will add more film crews in future seasons.

Also, they covered Williams a lot I thought in the previous seasons. In the end, it's a pretty small series to cover all the drivers and team bosses for a full season. Guess it took them by surprise and they couldn't or didn't want to fit the narratives they were developing.

The best thing was the man on fire episode. The video of roman while still in the car was amazing.

watching DTS ep 9 and the Roman crash , hard to watch, how the hell did he get out of it, looked even worse than at the time.
There was quite a few not expecting him to get out alive.
It was the best episode so far. We saw scenes never show on Sky and to capture the emotions coming from Roman after the crash with the wife... great television.

agreed, chocking up watching it, it was so so close to being much much worse.

Yeap. Reality TV at its best. The facial expressions during the interview. Then finished by the wife rolling her eyes. Every human emotion captured in that interview.
At least Roman can now be ok with a career decision that was taken away.

Yes. Season 3 was like the culmination of seasons 1 & 2. End of an act.

Season 4 will be about re-births. The post covid situation plus old faces in new teams, new faces in old teams.

I read that also, something big that they were still working on on testing maybe ?
FP should be interesting, all teams are still in a sort of semi testing mode I would guess.
Q3 should be when we see what they can really do

Watching Season 3 I can only imagine Toto with a smile on his face seeing Horner so confident after testing, just so he can crush his hopes and dreams.

Joking aside Mercs did this last year (someone correct me if Im wrong but Merc did get most laps in but held off on speed in testing), they always save it for practice.
 
I thought Hairy Cyril was alright in this season. It's a shame he's not around any more although there are rumours that he's been around Alfa Romeo.

The season that's now starting you mean? Because they want to be able to get going as a new team in quiet, without the tv pressure?
 
Really hope RB can legit challenge Mercedes this season. Although we can hardly judge anything till the first weekend, won't have to wait long.

The 9th episode of season 3 was wonderfully done btw. Should have covered a bit of George Russell, but other than that was great.

No at the beginning of the last racing season (2020) they didn't want to be featured in the latest (season 3) of Drive to Survive.

Nearly every time they were showing race action in Season 3 I was bothered by how there were shots sequentially out of place - like showing Sainz chasing Gasly on the last lap at Monza, a shot of them through the lesmo corners is followed by a shot of them breaking into the 2nd chicane which are before that - team radio that I also remember came from different times in the race culminating in one shot where either the driver or the engineer radios that "this set of hards isn't working" and right then the car showed is on fecking softs.

I don't remember seasons 1 & 2 being that bad at it, or was it? I get that it's for new fans, but can we at least have shots that are presented in actual sequence even if you're cutting out a 10 second section of the 2 cars just going down a straight? Can't wait for the actual racing to start though.

It's therefore hardly surprising to see him continue his tradition with Aston Martin, where he has chosen the suggestive sobriquet of 'Honey Ryder', proving for good measure that Vettel knows his James Bond classics.

'Honey Ryder' was the character in Ian Fleming's Dr. No and who was played in the 1963 film by sumptuous Swiss actress Ursula Andress.

A female friend of mine finally started watching Drive to Survive -- only after a year or so of me badgering her to do so. And now she has started to binge watch it -- kept on saying there are so many fit, handsome looking men in the show. Very few women. Everyone looks hot even the race engineers!

Regarding DTS

They ignored all COVID issues with individuals, they didn't mention Perez / Hulkenburg, and they didn't mention Hamilton.

I think as it's supposed to be an introduction to F1 they skipped the personal issues.
 
Red Bull looks a more hooked up car on that showing, it’s clear nobody is showing their hand this early but the Red Bull does look nicely balanced.

Mercedes has understeer and an untamed rear so even if they are running heavier it’s clear they aren’t sorted yet.

If the Red Bull isn’t as unreliable as last year then Max could win the title if they capitalise on these first few races before Mercedes catch up.
