F1 2021 Season

Is there an ELI5 post in here breaking all this down?

Random car (Latifi) crashes. Safety car comes out for safety purposes. Safety car means all cars are grouped together. This takes away the lead Hamilton had built up. That happens quite often. As it happens, the guy in second (Verstappen) pitted for fresh tires, which means he has more grip, can go faster. Car in lead (Hamilton) had old tires too, but chose not to pit. Then shortly before the end the race director let's all the cars between 1 & 2 (all were one lap behind) unlap themselves so they wouldn't interfere with the race for the win once the safety car pitted and racing could resume.

That's controversial because usually either all cars or no cars are allowed to unlap themselves before racing. Mercedes say that's the rules, Red Bull says that's not what the rules say. Race director states all teams have agreed in the past that it was highly desirable for the race to end in a 'green' condition' rather than behind a safety car. Letting all cars go past would likely have led to another lap behind the safety car, and there was only that one lap left.

Extra frustration from everyone because the race win also means the championship win.

Are you suggesting that it is only English fans who support Hamilton. And of course not all of them.
His appeal is global.

Yes, it was only the English fans in Abu Dhabi cheering on Hamilton. That's exactly what I am saying. Although I guess they didn't get to cheer too long.

You are deliberately ignoring the actual issue though.

You also ignored my perfectly valid question earlier. You claim to be a racing fan and think everyone should have wanted that last lap, which I did too, but yet you don't want to answer. I'm not surprised, you can't because it shows your whole line of nonsense up.

Cheek of you to simply talk "favourite driver" when you can't even be straight with yourself on this.

Let’s see what CAS decides. As far as I understand the rules it’s legal.

Yeah, because the Dutch have definitely covered themselves in glory
Yeah, some of the shit thrown at 'English' fans is pathetic. The Dutch are just as biased, if not more.

Claiming 'salty fans' as a reason for being against a dumb decision is about as ludicrous as it gets. Absolute toddler logic but then we have man-child in charge of RB who always whines until it goes his way and we had it happen again here.

So going a bit off topic here. With the new rules for next season, will that help the other teams get closer to Mercedes and Red Bull or with the gap widen? Would love to see more than 2 teams competing for titles.

we have a precedent of rules don’t matter. that makes things spicy for next year.

Anybody saying the decision doesn’t affect the sport are clearly not being objective.

Sport should never be artificially creating drama. That’s what it was today and it takes away massively from a maiden world championship win by guy that didn’t really do anything wrong.

Rules need to be changed before not all kicks off again, because such big moments should never be decided by people who can decide “whatever they want”.

I really hope so. This season has dragged me back in after decades of indifference - a fight between even 4 teams for the championship would be far preferable if rare.

As someone who doesn't really watch F1, I love that the cars and teams and race director are all mic'd up and it's broadcast. That needs to be in football.

It'd last about 3mins before the level of swearing and disrespect of officials turned the TV people straight off.

Well he stands up for some things the locals may not like so maybe not the best place to take a straw poll

It's not a sport then. If the Race Director can make the rules up on the fly then I don't know what it is but it's not a sport.

This exactly like in Wrestlemania 9 when Yokozuna beat Bret Hart for the title, only for the ref to randomly allow Hulk Hogan to immediately challenge (and beat) a tired Yokozuna and win the belt.

Powers that be changing the rules to entertain.

Pro-Wrestling and F1 = Sports Entertainment.

I love Max, but this is a terrible decision. Masi has been horrendous all season.

No matter the result of the appeal neither team should bring this to CAS. Accept the result and move on. Dragging it out only damages the sport
The sport is being damaged by the FIA. Overruling would bring a little more credibility to the sport and hopefully overhaul Masi and Co.

The appeal should go to the top.

I found it somewhat amusing that a grown up multi millionaire can reduce himself to something resembling a little kid not getting the Christmas present he wanted

i’m monumentally fecked off for the hours i feel i’ve now wasted watching f1 this year. i can’t imagine how it feels to dedicate your life to it and have it happen. i think mercedes have come out of this with a lot of credit so far.

Meh, I think it's quite clear both Max and Lewis are extremely good and much better than the rest of the field, but saying which one would be faster right now in the same car? I doubt anyone can say that with any certainty.

But feck me who wouldn't want to find out.

You think a referee being terrible at getting a decision right is the same as one actually changing a rule to suit tv audiences, the media and sponsors?

I mean, come on. He's allowed to change rules based on what he thinks at the time, apparently, is that a thing in football or any other sport?
Agree it's total BS and cannot see how you even need a rule book if this 'rule' is part of it. It's basically a general overrule clause.

I also get 'checked' in my day job and the people checking me are literally making the rules (as they go sometimes). I feel somewhat qualified to symphatise with Mercedes here

The new rules should make things pretty spicy but I would expect the field to get closer to Mercedes/Red Bull if I had to bet. Ferrari might be pretty strong considering they basically abandoned development in this year's car in preparation for next year.

Absolute joke of a circus.

Hamilton should have won that. I am still astonished hours on how they dealt with it.

People say that Verstappen won’t care - he will. Massive asterisk against his name in many people’s eyes for the foreseeable future. He had a phenomenal season, but that doesn’t dismiss the comeback Hamilton made to claw himself back into title contention and the drive he pulled off for 58 of the laps today before being the subsequent shitshow.

@pauldyson1uk is it too soon to start the 2022 season thread? Wouldn't mind one where we can discuss next season and the new regs etc and leave this seasons discussion and controversy in here.

This thread is like reading the RAWK thread when we won the CL in 08. You can actually see where all the salty Ham fans lose their collective shit when they realise that Ham and Merc have fecked it.

fecking glorious

And on top of that Toto pleading like a prison bitch on the Radio on that last lap. My god, stick it in my veins!!!
^Weird bloke.

I can absolutely guarantee you that he won't give a shit.

He'll think about Baku and Silverstone and Hungary and think, karma.

I would argue that F1 stewards know the rules of F1 better then random guy on football forum

You'd think Denethor would know well enough the importance of allowing Frodo safe passage into Mordor as well. Sometimes stewards get it wrong!

It was glorious wasn't it  What an end to an epic season.
We all thought it came down to the last race, who'd have thought it'd be the last lap
The tension on that last lap was unbelievable. An overtake on the last lap of the last race.

To finally have another team challenge Mercedes was great entertainment.

I can't wait till next year to see what way the grid lines up, and Russell next to Hamilton should be pretty interesting as well
