F1 2017 Season

I think I've registered but it was playing up, fingers crossed.

But Honda contribute so much financially to them, which would be lost, and then the cost of buying Merc engines on top
Probably financially worse to ditch Honda
Also have to consider that they're supposed to be aiming for a new title sponsor in time for next season, and with potato power there aren't going to be many blue chips willing to pay for it. And if they can't make the engine competitive this season, there's a further two years of this engine formula to go where results will be, at best, meh. Financial disaster was overstating it, but taking back the lowest amount of prize money and suffering the reputational damage along with that, with performances unlikely to get much better, is a terrible position to be in.

Who knows, maybe it's just gremlins in the engine and Honda will fix it in a few races time, but McLaren openly shopping elsewhere suggests problems may be far worse than that.

Yep it's alll just a power play to show Honda unless they sort themselves out they have the option of leaving.

Honda are funding them 100 million a year to have their engines, that can't be replaced lightly.

Where's this from? I've seen figures everywhere from 25m a year upwards without seeing anything reasonably legit on it.

Linking up with Mercedes - or Renault, which is another option - would be a momentous decision for McLaren with huge potential consequences because the Honda engine deal is worth close to a net $100m annually to the team compared to a customer engine deal.

As well as supplying free engines rather than paying the 17m euros (£14.8m) annual fee for a customer of Mercedes, Honda also pays half of McLaren's driver-salary bill and a significant sponsorship contribution.

James Allen puts the funding itself at $60m.

What's the collective wisdom of the Caf predicting? For me everything from testing points to Ferrari being a couple of tenths quicker than Mercedes with Red Bull (who I thought would nail it for this year) being a huge unknown. I feel like the latter two will outdevelop Ferrari over the course of the season though. Definitely the most intriguing start to the season I can remember for a while anyway, can't wait for FP1.

I have a sneaky feeling the mercs were sandbagging during testing and will be a couple of tenths up in Melbourne. Ferrari will be closer than last year, but I agree that RB & Merc will out develop them.

Got a feeling RB will be a tenth or 2 behind Ferrari just now but could score higher points more regularly due to their driver line-up.

I'm trying not to get too excited for Sunday morning. I've got a horrible feeling these cars are going to make overtaking very difficult due to not being able to follow closely the car in front

So instead of having a pay driver, McLaren kind of have a pay engine.

McLaren are the new Williams IMO. Honda will probably leave in the not-too-distant future and McLaren will get stuck in midfield mediocrity.

That's my worst fear about this season.
Well that and Hamilton cruising to the title

I think you could be right on the money.
Lewis is still the fav for me, I just don't see Bottas getting in the points enough to stop Kimi and Vettle.
If Ferrari have a reliable car, I can see them giving Merc a very good race for the constructors title

Agreed, Lewis has to be favourite.

I'm not sure Ferrari reliability is a concern as much as their strategists getting it right. Cost them around 40/50 points last year imo which would have seen them right up their with Red Bull.

Excited to see the cars in action & pleased that they should be @ full throttle for more of the laps for more consecutive laps. Just concerned that the improved downforce & mechanical grip will make overtaking harder. I think they should have just improved one (aero probably) and left the mechanical grip a little more unpredictable.

I think it will favour the Tilke-drones with slow, constant radius corners leading into big straights and hairpins. Faster flowing circuits like Spa and Monza will suffer.

I'm more interested in this season than I have been for a few years but they still need to sort the engines/fuel out.

Can't read too much into it yet as it is only FP1 and I expect Ferrari to do better. I understand Hamilton was on Ultras too and Ferrari did limited running from what I read eventually doing a time on supersofts.

Ferrari looks very fast however in the long runs Mercs looks much better and friendlier to the tyres. Merc up in my eyes. Hamilton up on Bottas, up to 0.5s it seems. Bottas will need to up his game if he intends to challenge Lewis.

I think the lap record will go tomorrow in qualifying too.

I don't think Bottas is Lewis's problem, yeah he will get a good few points but he wont be challenging him for the title.

I don't know how to get these very first results. I think we need to see what happens tomorrow. Just hope Seb can get the 2nd spot on the grid. It would be a big improvement on the last seasons.

If you have got the right car which Bottas has then you have got a good chance of winning the tittle, you have just got to look at what Nico did last year.

How do you guys rate Kimi's chances if the Ferrari comes good? Does he still have it in him to mount a challenge?

same has last season, saves messing each season setting a new one up.
If you have a team already in just pick your drivers.
Done. Am thinking engine is better to invest money
Pick Mercedes and you get a shot with more drivers than just spunking it on Hamilton
