Manchester United sign Argentine international as deal wrapped up, it's like deja vu all over again

Manchester United will shortly be wrapping up the signing of Argentine international defender Ezequiel Garay after the transfer was stated to be happening this summer by major Portuguese sport newspaper Record. They said a 'gentleman's agreement' had been sorted out between the two clubs and that the arrival of the defender at Old Trafford was all done apart from the actual details of signing a contract and paying the fee. Manchester United have decided to sign the player after scouting him several times because they want competition for Nemanja Vidic and Rio Ferdinand in central defence, despite appearing to have enough of that already.
Hang on, haven't we all been here before? Well, yes we have.
On June 3rd we said the following:
'Record are it again with their Garay to Manchester United claims. This time they say that the two clubs made a 'gentleman's agreement' at the beginning of the year to complete the defender's much rumoured transfer to Manchester United this summer.
According to the Portuguese newspaper, the only thing that could get in the way of such a deal is the change of manager. Sir Alex Ferguson was apparently very keen on Garay, sending his brother Martin to watch him several times but that appears useless now that both have left their roles at the club. However, as we said a few weeks ago, Everton had also been sending scouts to watch Benfica, which appeared very odd at the time. David Moyes has brought so much of his old Everton team with him that those scouting reports will come in useful, there's a conspiracy theory in there somewhere just waiting to break out.
Record say 'Garay should be sold for the amount of the termination clause - €20m - and half of the amount will be deposited in the vaults of Real Madrid, the club which Benfica signed him for €5.5m in 2011.'
The Portuguese newspaper have basically reported the same story on June 3rd and June 12th, which appears to be remarkably odd, either there is an agreement or there isn't, and what is a gentleman's agreement anyway?
Record appear to be being encouraged, because someone must be giving them this info, to repeatedly post reports that Manchester United are on the verge of completing a deal for Ezequiel Garay. We could assume they'd suffered some form of amnesia and forgotten that they'd already said the 'gentleman's agreement' was about to be finalised and the signing was imminent, but it's not the first time.
On June 3rd, we also said:
'We've got big trust issues with Record on their Garay reporting. In March they said that Manchester United had agreed a deal to sign him and plastered it all over their front page (see left). The player himself and even his girlfriend commented on the situation, with Garay giving the usual guff about being flattered but concentrating on his football. The newspaper were absolutely insistent a deal had been done, but the rest of the Portuguese media weren't so excited about the whole thing, leaving Record out on their own somewhat.'
So how many times can Manchester United sign Ezequiel Garay? This looks like someone trying to hurry the club along to complete the deal or trying to push his name out into the market yet again. If it's the latter then it's worked because there are stories all over Europe already, relating to Record's 'gentleman's agreement' claim today.
The transfer window doesn't close for around another 11 weeks, how many times can Record run the same 'gentleman's agreement' article claiming Garay will move to Manchester this summer? If Manchester United are interested, and some of the reporting is true, then someone somewhere obviously wants the deal concluded quickly.
Garay is represented by Jorge Mendes and if the player doesn't end up at Manchester United then the 'super-agent' shouldn't have trouble getting him a good deal elsewhere. As long as he represents you, he seems an excellent agent and adept at working the media, with the only exception to that being the mess Nani, another client, finds himself in at the moment. http://sportwitness.ning.com/forum/...gn-argentine-international-as-deal-wrapped-up
Oh yeah I forgot we just signed a RB yesterday. Why God why? Why another defender?
It's a silly signing for a decent wedge in a position we already have 5 good players in.
If he comes in someone has to go. Vidic is the only plausible option? Wierd but true.
Garay and Strootman will be our transfer business this summer IMO.
Why does someone have to go? Rio and Vida wont play full seasons leaving us with Evans, Smalling and Jones all of whom have had their own injury problems.
Garay and Strootman will be our transfer business this summer IMO.
So we will have 6 players for 2 positions. 4 of which will be first team regulars.
We've been sending scouts to Benfica numerous times over the last season, we're definitely interested in some one at Benfica, and with the recent links to Garay I'd be very surprised if it wasn't him.
